James Hensley was born Apr 1820 per the 1900 census.
That agrees with his ages on the 1850 through 1880 censuses. He was born in Rockingham Co., VA
(presumably). James is a proven child of Benjamin Hensley (c1790) and Nelly Meadows, as named in estate records dated 1896. James has a 1st cousin also named James Hensley (c1817) who is a son of James Hensley (c1781). There is some potential for mixing them up, but I think I have them pretty straight. John would have been just a few months old for the 1820 census. His father Benjamin had two boys under 10 (born ca 1810/20) living with him. One of those is certainly James. James would have been about 10 years old by the time of the 1830 census. Benjamin Hensley (c1790) had two boys aged 10-14 (born ca 1815/20) with him in 1830 in Rockingham. James would have been about 20 years old for the 1840 census so he should be in the 20-29 age group (born ca 1810/20). Benjamin (c1790) had one young man that age with him on that census, but that is probably John (1818), so James may be the one aged 15-19 (c1820/25) which also fits. On 14 Jan 1842 James Hensley obtained a marriage bond in neighboring Page County to marry Eliza Hall. She was born ca 1825/26 per her age on the 1850 census (24). I don't know who her parents are. They are listed on the 1850 census in Rockingham just a few houses from his parents.
They are still in Rockingham for the 1860 census just two houses from his parents.
They are still in Rockingham for the 1870 census.
They were on the 1880 census in neighboring Page County.
Eliza Hall Hensley died sometime between 1880 and 1900 either in Page or Rockingham County. James was still alive as of 1900 in Rockingham. I don't know where they are buried. |
