Benjamin Hensley was born ca 1789/90 per his age on the 1850
census (60). He was born in Rockingham Co., VA
(presumably). Benjamin is probably a son of Mary Hensley (bef 1765) of Rockingham. It isn't clear who her husband was, or if she was a single mother instead. I have no direct proof that she is his mother, but he was bondsman for the marriage of Mary's proven daughter, also named Mary in 1817. That shows an association, though doesn't prove he is a son of the older Mary. However, she is pretty much the only known possibility for his mother. The 1790 and 1800 censuses are lost for Rockingham. Mary Hensley is listed on the 1801 tax list in Rockingham Co., VA and has one male over 16 with her (not named). That is probably James Hensley (c1781) who was about 20 then. Benjamin would have been only 11 years old, so he wasn't yet taxable. Mary Hensley is listed on the 1810 census in Rockingham. She has one male with her age 16-25 (born ca 1784/94). This is probably Benjamin. Benjamin Hensley served in the War of 1812 and filed for a pension late in life. I don't have a copy, but a brief abstract I've seen shows that he served as a Private in Capt. Adam Hansbarger's Company of Virginia Militia. On or about 22 Aug 1813 Benjamin Hensley married "Nelly Meadows" in Rockingham Co., VA. I don't have a good transcript of the marriage record, so I don't know if his or her parents were listed, or who the bondsman was. Ellen "Nelly" Meadows was born ca 1784/85 per her age on the 1850 census (65). "Nelly" is a common nickname for "Ellen" and "Eleanor." I don't know who her parents were. They are listed on the 1820 census in Rockingham next to brother James. Ellen Meadows Hensley died on 19 Jul 1862 per her death record. It listed her as age 84 (way off), and cause of death as "Old Age." Her parents were listed as unknown. It is thought that she is buried at the Hensley Hollow Cemetery in Rockingham Co., VA, though there is no marker for her. Benjamin was listed on the 1870 census in Rockingham with his son John and family residing with him.
Benjamin Hensley died on 28 Apr 1875 according to his War of 1812 Pension Records. I didn't find a county death record for him in Rockingham. He is probably buried beside his wife at the Hensley Hollow Cemetery in Rockingham Co., VA, though there is no marker for him either. |

Children of Benjamin Hensley and Ellen
Meadows.
Six children are proven by chancery court records dated 1896. Those
named were: Benjamin Hensley Jr., Mildred Smith wife of Manson Smith,
Lucinda Hensley wife of William Hensley, James Hensley, John Hensley
(deceased) and Simeon Hensley. The 1830 and 1840 census shows three
other apparent children. They may have died young, or been someone
other than their own children. One of Benjamin and Ellen's descendants is Virginia Patterson Hensley, better known as "Patsy Cline." |

Mildred Hensley was born ca 1813/14 per
her age on the 1850 census (36). She was presumably born in Rockingham
Co., VA. She is a proven child of Benjamin Hensley as named in the
1896 court record. She seems to be home with her parents for the 1820 census, aged under 10 (c1810/20) and home in 1830 aged 15-19 (c1810/15), and still home in 1840 aged 20-29 (c1810/20). On 17 Jun 1847 Manson Smith obtained a marriage bond to marry Mildred Hensley in Rockingham Co., VA. Manson was born ca 1808/09 per his age on the 1850 census (41). He had been married prior to Malinda's 1st cousin (presumed) Malinda Hensley. They are listed on the 1850 census next to her brother Simeon Hensley.
They are listed on the 1860 census in Rockingham two houses from her parents. Her nephew Simeon Hensley is living with her, or else the census taker just left him out of his own household (next to hers) and wrote him in hers at the bottom of the page (he is the last name on the page).
They are on the 1870 census in Rockingham two houses from her sister Lucinda Hensley.
They are on the 1880 census in Rockingham near various relatives.
I don't know when Manson or Mildred died, though obviously after 1880. I didn't find them among the Rockingham Co., VA Cemetery records. |

Simeon Hensley was born ca 1825/26 per his
age on the 1850 census (24). He was presumably born in Rockingham Co.,
VA. He is a proven child of Benjamin Hensley as named in the 1896
court record. He seems to be home with his parents for the 1830 census, aged 5-9 (c1820/25), and home in 1840 aged 10-14 (c1825/30). On or about 14 Feb 1850 Simeon Hensley married "Janitta" Breeden in Rockingham Co., VA. Ginetta Breeden was born ca 1833/34 per her age on the 1850 census (16). I don't know who her parents were. They are listed on the 1850 census a few houses from his parents.
They weren't in Rockingham or elsewhere in Virginia for the 1860 census. A quick search shows they had moved to Cooper Co., MO by then, though apparently just before 1860 for their youngest child, age 1, was listed as born in Virginia. Job Breeden, 59 and wife Sally 56 were listed next to them. Perhaps those are Ginetta's parents.
I searched the 1870 census for them with no luck. I found her parents (I think) in St. Clair Co., MO in 1870, but no sign of the Hensleys. After searching the 1880 census I discovered why I couldn't find them in 1870. Apparently Simeon Hensley had died (*see below regarding Simeon, he wasn't dead yet) and Ginetta had remarried a Mr. Kephart. This is seemingly proven by the 1880 census showing her as a Kephart (and widowed a 2nd time apparently) with George Hensley living with her listed as her son. Using that information I searched the 1870 census again for them. I found what could be her in St. Clair Co., MO in 1870, though her Hensley children were not with her, so I'm not sure if it is her or not. The name and age and surname is right, but the birth place is wrong and the lack of Hensley children is wrong. The listing includes Jacob Capehart age 50 born KY; Jennette age 37 born TN; Jesse age 16 born IN. If this is her, then her Hensley children were either left off accidentally or were living with other relatives somewhere and not listed. I don't think this 1870 entry is the same person. The 1880 entry shows only George W. Hensley still with his mother. The other two must have married or died by then. (Note, it is entirely possible this isn't the same person as Ginetta Breeden Hensley.)
Note: Although it appears that Simeon died before 1880 and Ginetta married again, the 1896 estate records of Benjamin Hensley contradict that. Therein it is stated that he was still alive at that time and living in Missouri (county not stated) as he was the one who brought the suit against the estate. Having noted that he was still alive as late as 1896 where was Simeon on the 1870 and 1880 census? I haven't been able to find him. I typically don't chase Hensleys as recent as the 1900 census but in this case I did to see if I could find Simeon. Indeed I did. He was alive and well and "back" in St. Clair Co., MO and "back" with his wife! They were listed together in Roscoe Township with no children at home. He was listed as age 75 born June 1824 and she as age 66 born Aug 1834. They were listed as having been married 50 years (ca 1850, which is correct). She was listed as having given birth to no children which is wrong. What happened? I can see two possibilities, one is that Simeon vanished for awhile, Ginetta thought he was dead and remarried and was widowed again, and later got back together when Simeon returned. Or two, they were just missed in 1870 and 1880 census and the Kephart / Capehart widow is someone else entirely, though she did have George W. Hensley living with her listed as "son" so that is hard to ignore. |
