Robert B. Hensley was born 5 Mar 1822 per his tombstone.
That agrees with his ages on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census all of
which show him born ca 1822/23 or ca 1821/22. He was born in Rockingham Co., VA
(presumably). Robert is a son of James Hensley (c1781) and Elizabeth Maiden as shown on his marriage bond (thanks to Pat Falls for sharing that). Robert would have been about 8 years old by the time of the 1830 census. Benjamin Hensley (c1790) had two boys aged 5-9 (born ca 1820/25) and John Hensley (1800/10) also had two. No other Hensleys were listed in Rockingham County. James Hensley (c1781), whom I believe to be Robert's father wasn't listed in 1830 for some reason. Robert Hensley would have been about 18 years old for the 1840 census so he should be in the 15-19 age group (born ca 1820/25). James Hensley (c1781) had two boys that age. Benjamin (c1790) had one. Robert Hensley married Louisa Breeding (Breeden) on 1 Feb 1842 in neighboring Page Co., VA. She was born 21 May 1825 per her tombstone. She was born in Virginia though I don't know whether Rockingham or Page County or elsewhere. I don't know who her parents are. They are listed on the 1850 census in Rockingham next door to his parents.
They are still in Rockingham for the 1860 census. No other Hensleys are nearby.
They are still in Rockingham for the 1870 census. Numerous relatives were nearby. Their census entry is messed up as are most on the 1870 census (worst census ever!). The names and ages of the children are all mixed up.
They were on the 1880 census in Rockingham. Various relatives were listed nearby.
Louisa Breeden Hensley died on 29 Apr 1897 and is buried at the Hensley Community Cemetery in Rockingham County. Robert B. Hensley died on 26 Dec 1898 and is buried by his wife. |
