I (Marty Grant) am not related to John A. Hensley as far as I know.

John A. Hensley was born ca 1828/29 in Buncombe Co, NC (now Yancey Co, NC).

I don't know who John's parents were. There are quite a few suspects.

I've done some census analysis to see if there are any other possibilities. John would have presumably been with his parents for the 1830 census, in the "under 5" age group (born ca 1825/30), and with them in 1840, in the 10-14 age group (ca 1825/30).

On the 1830 census, there were several Hensley households in Buncombe with a male under 5, or born ca 1825/30, however, most of these are already proven to be someone else, but for the sake of completeness, here are the possibilities (if it says "unlikely" afterwards, that means the "under 5" males are already identified as someone other than this John, or the family had another proven son named "John"). Suspects from 1830 are: Joab Hensley (c1796) (unlikely), Abishai Hensley (c1789) (unlikely), Lewis Hensley (c1784/90),  Bannister Hensley (c1811) (had another son named "John"), Pleasant Hensley (c1800), Samuel Hensley (c1800), Berry Hensley (c1783) (had another son named "John"), Charles Hensley (c1796) (had another son named "John"), John Hensley (c1794/1800), Jesse Hensley (c1804) (had another son named "John"), Hickman Hensley (c1804), Amos Hensley (c1803) (unlikely), James Hensley (c1795/1800).

The above list shows many possibilities. The 1840 census doesn't really help narrow down the list any.

In 1840 Yancey County, there were only a few Hensley households with a male in the 10-14 age group, (born ca 1825/30), including Silas A. Hensley (c1816) (had another son named "John"), Amos Hensley (c1803), Charles Hensley (c1796) (had another son named "John"), William A. Hensley (1798) (had another son named "John"), Berry Hensley (c1783) (had another son named "John"), James Hensley (c1795/1800), Berry R. Hensley (c1802) (had another son named "John"), and Samuel Hensley (c1805).

Using the above list, we are left with Amos, James and Samuel as candidates. James and Amos don't seem likely to me. That only leaves Samuel. John A. Hensley did name one of his sons "Samuel", so that is more evidence in his favor, but not enough to go on.

John A. Hensley married Anna Mariah --- ca 1840/47 in Yancey Co, NC. I have no clues about her possible maiden name.

John and family were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey County. They were not listed near any other Hensleys. He was listed as "John Hensley Jr", probably to distinguish himself from one of the several older John Hensley's in Yancey at the time. Their neighbors in 1850 were Martha Young (apparent widow), and Calvin Edney.

John and family were still in Yancey County for the 1860 census. There were no other Hensley's listed nearby them in 1860.

John and Anna had eight children by the time of the 1870 census, and may have had more after that. I have very little data on any of them at this time.
