I (Marty Grant) am not related to Martin Hensley as far as I know.

Martin Hensley was born ca 1831/32 (per 1850 and 1860 census) in Tennessee (per 1850 census). I don't know what county he was born in, though Wayne County is possible, or one of the parent counties of Lewis (Hickman or Maury).

I don't know who Martin's parents are, but he may be associated with the Lewis County, Tennessee Hensleys (descendants of Hickman Hensley) or Wayne County, Hensleys (descendants of Lemuel Hensley) many of whom migrated to Searcy Co, AR. He was living with John and Nancy Treadwell in 1850, and Nancy was born ca 1825 in Tennessee, so perhaps she is his sister. It seems reasonable to me that he is more likely part of the Lemuel Hensley family than the Hickman Hensley family, mainly because in 1860 he was living next door to one of the sons of Mark Hensley, son of Lemuel. (Of course Lemuel and Hickman are probably related too). In any event, I can't say who Martin's parents were, nor offer any highly likely candidates. The 1880 census shows that both of Martin's parents were born in North Carolina.

Martin Hensley would have been about 8 years old by the time of the 1840 census, so he should be enumerated in the age 5-9 category (born ca 1830/35). There were no Hensleys in 1840 Searcy Co, AR, so presumably he was still in Tennessee then or in some other Arkansas county with his parents. Of the Lewis County, TN Hensleys, (Lewis was still part of several other counties back in 1840), John A. Hensley (c1812) had an unknown son Martin's age in 1840; Samuel Hensley (c1780) had an unknown son that age also. None of the Wayne County Hensleys had an extra son this age, but it should be noted that several of the same Wayne County Hensleys who wound up in Searcy, were not listed anywhere in 1840. They may have been moving during 1840 and not listed on any census.

In 1850, Martin Hensley was listed in Searcy County, Arkansas with John and Nancy Treadwell family, perhaps Nancy is his sister. They weren't near any other Hensleys, but were in the same district with Pleasant K. J. Hensley (c1827).

Martin Hensley married Amanda --- between 1850 and ca 1855 in Searcy County, Arkansas. She was born ca 1836/37 in Arkansas. I don't know her maiden name.

They were still in Searcy County for the 1860 census in Sulphur Springs Township. They were next door to James W. Hensley (c1838) son of Mark H. Hensley (c1818).

They were still in Sulpher Springs in 1870. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

In 1880 they were in neighboring Pope County, Arkansas in Independence Township. Three nieces and nephews were with them, and these three are clues to who Martin's parents are: Martin Hensley (c1866 AR), Mary E. Hensley (c1869 AR), and Benjamin Rentfrow (c1862 AR). ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Children

Martin and Amanda had at least six children per the various census records. I don't have much additional data on any of them so far.
