Revision History:
  • 31 Dec 2008 - Added note about additional possible children based on Debbie Fain's research. Also added her to researcher list.
  • 26 Dec 2008 Reformatted and Modified by Marty Grant, relationship unknown. Original page created many years ago with very little documentation. This is a completely new page, fully documented.
Samuel Hensley was born ca 1789/90 per his age on the 1850 census (60) and the 1870 census (80). However, his 1860 census entry gives his age as 60 (born ca 1799/1800), and his 1864 marriage record gives his age as 60 (born ca 1803/04). His 1880 census entry shows age of 88 (ca 1791/92). Although I can't be certain from these records, I'm going to use the ca 1789/90 birth date as the more accurate one.

Samuel Hensley was born in Albemarle Co., VA according to his marriage certificate (second marriage in 1864 in Boyd Co., KY).

I don't know who Samuel's parents were. The 1787 tax list for Albemarle Co., VA shows five Hensleys there. Since this was just three years before Samuel's birth (assuming his ca 1790 birth is correct), one of these men may be his father. There was Lewis Hensley, William Hensley, Benjamin Hensley, Samuel Hensley and another William Hensley. Benjamin died ca 1788 so he can't be this Samuel's father. I don't know much about the others yet. There is some roundabout evidence that Samuel is a son of Samuel Hensley (1750/60-1830) of VA and KY. This could be the same Samuel listed in Albemarle in 1787, but I'm not sure of that. For more on this possible connection to the older Samuel, see the notes given below regarding the 1860 census.

Samuel Hensley married Catherine (---) sometime before ca 1820. She was born ca 1799/1800 per her age in 1850 (50), born somewhere in Virginia. I don't know her maiden name.

They are listed on the 1820 census in Cabell Co., VA (now WV), one of several Hensleys there at that time. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so it is impossible to tell which of the Hensleys were neighbors to each other. Cabell was a huge county at this point in time. Mrs. Hensley in 1820 was too old, so perhaps this was a wife prior to Catherine, or perhaps her age here is just a census error. His marriage record in 1864 shows that as his second marriage, so this must be Catherine in 1820, if the marriage record is correct.

Logan County was formed in 1824 from southern Cabell taking several of the Hensley families into the new county. Samuel remained in Cabell it seems.

They are still in Cabell for the 1830 census. There were actually two Samuels listed, they were one page apart. Unfortunately the census was once again listed alphabetically, so I can't determine who either Samuel lived near. I'll give both entries here, though it is pretty clear that the one on page 15 is the same one who was in Cabell back in 1820, but it isn't certain which of them is the Samuel who married Catherine (---). Using the 1840 and 1850 census it becomes possible to tell which Samuel was which, and that information can be back-traced to 1830, showing the one on page 15 is the one we are interested in at this moment. Be sure to visit the page for the other Samuel Hensley (c1804) also.

Samuel (c1790) had an older woman at home with him. Is that his widowed mother perhaps? Or is it Catherine's widowed mother? No way to be certain.

Both Samuels are still in Cabell for the 1840 census, but not anywhere near each other. At this point it becomes possible to determine which is the one married to Catherine based on who the neighbors are. The Samuel on page 29 is listed near the Rutherford family, just as Samuel and Catherine were in 1850, so based on that, and the ages of the apparent children, it becomes clear which Samuel was which. I'll still give both entries for the sake of thoroughness.

In 1842 Wayne County was formed from the southern half of Cabell taking Samuel and Catherine Hensley and family with it. The other Samuel Hensley (c1804) remained in Cabell County.

Samuel and family are listed on the 1850 census in Wayne County. His son Watson (Woodson) is in the same house, but listed as a separate family.

They were not in Wayne Co., VA for the 1860 census. A short search showed they had moved to neighboring Boyd Co., KY. Boyd had been created in 1860 from parts of Carter, Lawrence and Greenup Counties. Depending on when they moved, they probably lived in one of those parent counties before Boyd was formed. Greenup is most likely. That area was full of Hensleys, and they were listed on the census near several of them, presumably related in some fashion. The nearest included Rutha, widow of George Hensley (1788) just seven houses away. Several of their children were also nearby. There may be evidence that George is a son of Samuel Hensley (1750/60-1830). If so, then perhaps Samuel (c1790) is also. See their pages for more on that. At this point I'm not convinced that the older Samuel is their father, though it does seem probably that Samuel (c1790) and George (1788) are brothers, or at least closely related in some way.

Catherine (---) Hensley died sometime between 1860 and 1864 in Boyd Co., KY.

On 17 May 1864 Samuel Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Boyd Co., KY to marry Elizabeth Friley (or Fraley). Franklin Hensley (his son) was bondsman. They were married on 19 May 1864. The record gave Samuel as a resident of Boyd Co., KY, a farmer, aged 60, and that this was his 2nd marriage. He was born Albemarle Co., VA. Parents birth places were listed as "not known!" Elizabeth was listed as age 20, her first marriage, born Russell Co., VA, parents (not named) born same place. Catherine Crow and Frank Hensley and wife were witnesses to the marriage. (From Boyd Co., KY Marriage Book 1, shared by Laura Schreibman)

They are listed on the 1870 census in Boyd Co., KY just three houses from Reuben Fraley (c1783 VA) and Lucinda (c1803 VA), Elizabeth's parents perhaps?

They are still in Boyd County for the 1880 census. Jacob Hensley (c1833) is next door. I believe he is the same one in Lawrence Co., KY in 1850 and 1860, relationship to Samuel unknown, possibly a nephew. His mother was Sarah Hensley (c1790).

Samuel died between 1880 and 1900, presumably in Boyd Co., KY. I wasn't able to find Elizabeth on the 1900 census, so she may have died, or remarried after Samuel's death.

Children of Samuel Hensley and Catherine (---) and Elizabeth Fraley. The 1820 through 1880 census records show many children for Samuel and his two wives. Unfortunately many of the earlier children are not positively identified. The 1850 census proves Woodson (c1825), Emily (c1832), William (c1834), Catherine (c1835), Franklin (c1838) and Malissa (c1839). Those birth dates aren't entirely trustworthy as their ages change drastically from census to census.

Debbie Fain includes Joel Hensley (c1822), Elias Oliver Hensley (c1826), Milton Millard Hensley (1827) and Mary Hensley (c1834) among the children. I haven't seen the proof for them being Samuel's children yet, but I thought I should mention them. They all lived in the same area and were neighbors to Samuel and family, so it certainly works based on proximity. I haven't found anything else on Mary yet, unless she is the same person as Catherine or Malissa, either of which is possible.

  14. Malissa Hensley (c1839)

Woodson S. Hensley was born ca 1817/18 per his age on the 1850 census (52). He was presumably born in Cabell Co., VA (now Wayne Co., WV). He appears to be with his parents for the 1820 census aged under 10 (1810/20) and home in 1830, aged 10-14 (1815/20).

Woodson Hensley married Catharine Purdue on 26 Dec 1839 in Lawrence Co., OH (which borders both WV and KY right where the Hensleys lived). (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for find this marriage record)

I wasn't able to find them on the 1840 census. They may be with his parents, for there are people in his household that year who would fit. Woodson would be the one listed age 20-29 (1810/20), Catherine would be 15-29 (1820/25). Son Wiley (c1839) would be the boy aged under 5 (1835/40).

Woodson and children were listed with his parents for the 1850 census. Catherine had apparently died between ca 1846 and 1850.

Woodson Hensley married Adaline (---) between 1850 and ca 1853 in Wayne Co., VA (now WV). I don't know her maiden name.

They are listed on the 1860 census in neighboring Boyd Co., KY.

They are on the 1880 census in Boyd Co., KY. Another family appears to be with them, but they begin at the top of the next page and no relationship is given to the Hensleys. Perhaps they were just mis-numbered. Ruth, widow of George Hensley (1788) is two houses away.

I wasn't able to find Woodson on the 1900 census, he may have died before then. I couldn't find Adaline either.

Unknown Daughter (1815/20). Samuel Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1820, aged under 10 (c1810/20) and still home in 1830 aged 10-14 (1815/20), She was gone from the household by 1840 unless she is the "extra" one there that year aged 15-19 (1820/25). That works if she was born ca 1820. That extra one is probably Catherine Purdue, Woodson Hensley's wife.
Unknown Son (c1820). Samuel Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1830 aged 5-9 (1820/25) and still home in 1840 aged 20-29 (1810/20). He was gone from his parents household by 1850.

Emily Hensley was born ca 1830/31 per her age on the 1850 census (19). She was presumably born in Cabell Co., VA (now Wayne Co., WV). She seems to be with her parents in 1840, aged 5-9 (1830/35), and was home with them in 1850 ("Emily" age 19). She wasn't with them in 1860, so probably married or dead by then.
William Hensley was born ca 1833/34 per his age on the 1850 census (16). He was presumably born in Cabell Co., VA (now Wayne Co., WV). He seems to be with his parents in 1840, aged 5-9 (1830/35), and was home with them in 1850 ("William" age 16). He was head of household in 1860 with his parents living with him. He was listed as 23 this year (born ca 1836/37).

I wasn't able to find William on the 1870 census. He may have died or moved away before then.

Catherine Hensley was born ca 1834/35 per her age on the 1850 census (15). She was presumably born in Cabell Co., VA (now Wayne Co., WV). She seems to be with her parents in 1840, aged 5-9 (1830/35), and was home with them in 1850 ("Catherine" age 15). She wasn't with them in 1860, so probably married or dead by then.
Unknown Son (1835/40). Samuel Hensley had an apparent son this age with him on the 1840 census, aged under 5 (1835/40). He wasn't home in 1850, so perhaps he had died by then.

This is probably Wiley Hensley (c1839) son of Woodson Hensley.

Unknown Son (1835/40). Samuel Hensley had an apparent son this age with him on the 1840 census, aged under 5 (1835/40). He wasn't home in 1850, so perhaps he had died by then.
John Franklin Hensley was born ca 1837/38 per his age on the 1850 census (12). He was apparently home with his parents in 1840, aged under 5 (1835/40) and was home in 1850 ("Franklin" age 12), and still home in 1860 ("John F." age 21).

John Franklin Hensley married Margaret Krusin on 21 Feb 1860 in Boyd Co., KY.

They are on the 1870 census next door to his parents.

I have not traced them beyond this.

Malissa Hensley was born ca 1838/39 per her age on the 1850 census (11). She was apparently home with her parents in 1840, aged under 5 (1835/40) and was home in 1850 ("Malissa" age 11), and possibly still home in 1860 ("Martha." age 16). The age and name is wrong in 1860 so that may be a different person.
