Samuel Hensley was born ca 1803/04 per his age on the 1850 census (46) and 1880 census (76). His other census entries are little different, but not too far off. He was born in Virginia (per 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census), county unknown. He may have been born in that part of Virginia which later became West Virginia.

There was another Samuel Hensley (c1790) in Cabell Co., VA (WV) at the same time as he, so there is a chance to mix them up when looking at records. The other Samuel wound up in Wayne County when it was created in 1842 from Cabell.

I don't know who Samuel's parents are for certain, but he may be a son of Solomon Hensley (c1779).

Samuel Hensley married Parthenia Dunlap before 1830, probably in Cabell Co., VA (now WV). She was born ca 1803/04 in North Carolina, a child of John Dunlap and Patsy (---). Her parents names are given on her death record.

There are two Samuel Hensleys on the 1830 census in Cabell. The younger one is this Samuel.

They are still in Cabell for the 1870 census, still next to John L. Hensley (c1827) and three house from Ichabod C. "Bird" Hensley (c1810).

They are listed on the 1880 census in Cabell. He isn't near the other Hensleys this time. However, Caroline Thornburg and family, and her father Sampson Hanly (c1802) are apparently living with them (or the census taker mis-numbered them). I don't know how or if they are related. Mrs. Thornburg had been living with Samuel's son James back in 1870. These two records indicate some sort of connection between them.

Parthenia Dunlap Hensley died on 28 Dec 1885 in Cabell Co., WV. Her death record gives her name as "Marthena" Hensley, age 80, cause of death was old age, parents were "Jno & Patsy Dunlap" and that she was born in North Carolina. Her husband was listed as Samuel Hensley, and he was also the informant for the information on the death record. (Records online at <West Virginia Vital Research Records>)

Samuel Hensley died at some point after 1885, presumably in Cabell Co., WV. There is no death record for him as far as I could find.

Children of Samuel Hensley and Parthenia Dunlap. The 1830 through 1880 census records shows several children. I have made only a small attempt to trace any of them. They also have an unidentified daughter born ca 1825/30 who was home with them in 1830 and 1840 but gone by 1850. This is probably the daughter who married a Mr. Price and died shortly afterwards. The 1840 census shows two unknown sons born 1835/40. They were not home in 1850 or found elsewhere. They may have died before then.
