Ichabod C. Hensley was probably born late in 1810 per his ages
on the 1850 through 1880 censuses. 1850 (39); 1860 (50); 1870 (60) and
1880 (69). All those census records list his birth place as Virginia.
When he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1827 he gave his birth place as
Pittsylvania Co., VA. Since he lied about his age (for which he was
later discharged), he may also have fibbed about his birth place.
However, there were Hensleys in Pittsylvania County, so he may be
connected to them somehow. He almost always went by the nickname "Bird" or "Byrd" which, like "Bud" is sometimes used as a shortened form for "Ichabod." He is one of several men named Ichabod C. Hensley (or just Ichabod Hensley, no middle initial). Was it coincidence that they were all named this, or were they each named after one of the others? Or were they all named after some unrelated, but locally famous person? Visit my Ichabod . Hensley page for more on this subject. I don't know who Bird's parents are for certain, but he was associated with Solomon Hensley (c1779). Solomon is almost certainly a close relative, either his father or an uncle at least. He probably wasn't born yet when the 1810 census was taken, but by the 1820 census he would have been about 9 or 10 years old. Solomon Hensley (in Cabell) had four boys under 10 (born ca 1810/20) and one aged 10-15 (ca 1804/10). Any of those could be Bird Hensley if Solomon is his father. On 23 Aug 1827 "Bird Henslee" enlisted in the U. S. Army as a Private. He was described as 5' 6 1/2" in height, 21 years old, born Virginia, Pittsylvania; Eyes Hazle (sic), Hair brown, fair complexion, a Laborer by trade. He enlisted at Newport for 5 years in the 6th Infantry. His Army career was cut short when he was discharged on 1 Apr 1828 for being a minor. It isn't stated how his true age was discovered. If he was born late in 1810 as I believe, then he was only 17 when he enlisted, and probably not yet 18 when discharged. He was in Clay Co., IL on 14 Jan 1829 when he married Nancy Webb there. She was born ca 1811/12 per her age of 38 on the 1850 census. She was 50 in 1860 (ca 1809/10) and 59 in 1870 (ca 1810/11). Those three records don't reconcile perfectly, but they are pretty close to one another. She was born in Kentucky according to the 1860 and 1870 census. Her parents are William Webb and Nancy according to Nancy Webb Hensley's death record. They are listed on the 1850 census in Cabell Co., VA as were several other Hensleys, but very far away.
They were still in Cabell for the 1860 census, again not listed near any of the other Hensleys.
They are still in Cabell for the 1870 census, this time they are two houses from John L. Hensley (c1827) and three from Samuel Hensley (c1804). Their relationship to each other is unknown, but the proximity suggests they are closely related.
Nancy Webb Hensley died on 30 Jun 1876 in Cabell Co., WV. Her death record gives her age as 64, cause of death was Consumption, parents were "Wm & Nancy Webb" and that she was born in Kentucky. Her husband was listed as Bird Hensley, and he was also the informant for the information on the death record. (Records online at <West Virginia Vital Research Records>) Bird Hensley is listed on the 1880 census in Cabell. He isn't near the other Hensleys this time.
Bird Hensley died at some point in the 1880's or 1890's, presumably in Cabell Co., WV. There is no death record for him as far as I could find. There is one for another Bird Hensley dated 1885, but that was a child of the same name. |
