John L. Hensley was born ca 1826/27 per his age on the 1850
census (23). He was born somewhere in Virginia (per 1850 census)
probably in that part of Virginia that later became West Virginia. I don't know who his parents were. In 1850 he was living with Alexander Hensley (c1818) perhaps an older brother. In 1850 they are next to Patrick Hensley (c1815). In 1860 and 1870 he was next door to Samuel Hensley (c1804), relationship unknown though probably not his father. In 1870 he was two houses from Ichabod C. "Bird" Hensley (c1810). It is reasonable to assume that John is related to all of the Hensleys just mentioned, especially Alexander. Looking at the 1830 census, John would have been about 3 years old. In Cabell there was Samuel Hensley (c1790), John Hensley (1790/1800), and Samuel Hensley (c1804) who each had at least one son aged under 5 (born ca 1825/30). Samuel (c1804) probably isn't John's father for his son in that age group is identified. Samuel (c1790) isn't for he had another son named John. That leaves John (1790/1800) of whom not much is known. It is notable that John (1790/1800) also had a son in 1830 the right age to be Alexander (c1818). In 1840 John L. Hensley would have been about 13 years old. The two Samuels were the only ones in Cabell with apparent sons that age, and as noted, neither of them is likely the father of John L. Hensley. John L. Hensley married Susan (---) before ca 1849 in either Cabell or Wayne Co., VA (WV). She was born ca 1827/28 in Virginia (both facts per 1850 census). I don't know her maiden name. They are listed on the 1850 census in Wayne Co., VA with his probable brother Alexander Hensley (c1818).
John had gone back to neighboring Cabell County for the 1860 census. They are listed next to Samuel Hensley (c1804).
Susan (---) Hensley died between 1860 and 1870, presumably in Cabell Co., WV (no death record found). John L. Hensley married Catherine (---) in the 1860's. She was born ca 1829/30 in Virginia. I don't know her maiden name. It appears she was married to a Mr. Clark prior to her marriage to John. They were still in Cabell for the 1870 census, and still next door to Samuel Hensley (c1804), and two houses from Ichabod C. "Bird" Hensley (c1810).
They are on the 1880 census in Cabell next door to James A. Hensley (son of Samuel-1804).
I don't know when John or Catherine died, though sometime after 1880, presumably in Cabell Co., WV. |
