[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to Joseph Benjamin Johnson.
Special thanks to Deryl Young for data shared on this family. A family chart prepared by James D. Johnstone provided many full names and dates for this family. I don't know what the sources for that information might be.
This family apparently resided in the section of Horry County later known as Gallivants Ferry Township.
The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson". I'm not sure which is the "correct" spelling for this family. Deryl Young reports that this family often used the "Johnstone" spelling, which makes them somewhat unique among the later Johnson families of this area.
Joseph Benjamin Johnstone was born 11 Nov 1806 (from a chart prepared by James D. Johnstone, shared with me by Deryl Young) which agrees with the date of ca 1805/06 that I have per the 1850 census record.
He was born in South Carolina, presumably Horry District, though possibly somewhere else. His name is given different ways in the various records, I've seen him as "Joseph", "Joseph B.", "J. B.", and "J. Benjamin". I don't know what his friends and family might have called him.
I don't know who J. B. 's parents were. There are numerous suspects. The aforementioned chart by James D. Johnstone (shared by Deryl Young) shows J. B. 's parents as Gilbert Johnstone (1781-1826) and Hannah Ford. There were two Gilbert Johnston's in 1790 Georgetown, both too old to be this Gilbert. In 1800 Georgetown, Waccamaw County (present Horry), there was a Gilbert Johnston, though too old to be this Gilbert. I found a Gilbert Johnston on the 1810 census in Georgetown Dist, SC. This must be J. B. 's father, as I found no other Gilbert in SC in 1810. This Gilbert did have an apparent son born ca 1800/10 (age "under 10"), and this fits perfect with Joseph Benjamin (1806).
I did not find Gilbert Johnston(e) listed on the 1820 census index in SC.
According to the Johnstone chart, Joseph Benjamin Johnstone married Martha Christiana Rogers sometime prior to 1828 (based on birth date of child). I have no additional data on her, such as her birth date, or parents names, but apparently she died ca 1828, possibly in childbirth.
I don't know where Joseph B. Johnstone was living in 1830. There were two Joseph's listed on the 1830 census in Horry, but I think both of them are other people.
Joseph Benjamin Johnstone married again sometime prior to 1836. His wife was listed by initials "E. S." on the 1850 census. However, the Johnstone chart shows her as Elizabeth Sweet Green. She was 2 Sep 1815 (per chart). I don't know what county she was born in, nor who her parents were.
There was a Joseph Johnson listed on the 1840 census index in Williamsburg Dist, SC, which may be this same Joseph. ** I don't have the enumerations for that yet though.
There is a "Joseph B. Johnson" on the 1845 tax list for Horry, listed with 20 acres. This person had 20 acres of land, but "J. B." had no land per the 1850 census (he could have sold the land between 1845 and 1850 though).
J. B. and family were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC not particularly close to any other Johnson families. Unfortunately, the census taker only got everyone by initial and not name, so it is hard to identify anyone.

According to the Johnstone chart, Elizabeth Green Johnstone died 28 Feb 1855. I'm assuming she died in Horry District, though I don't know that for sure.
Also according to the chart, Joseph B. Johnstone remarried again on 2 Sep 1856 in Brittons Neck (Marion District) to Elizabeth Ann Calcut. I know nothing else about her. I did not find anyone of her surname in Marion, Horry or Williamsburg for the 1850 census.
I did not find them in Horry for the 1860 or 1870 census. They might have been in Williamsburg in those years (I have not checked).
Joseph Benjamin Johnstone died on 22 Nov 1861 (per chart).
Joseph Benjamin Johnston and his first wife had at least one child, and he and his second wife had at least eight children. I don't know if his 3rd wife had any children or not.
I have no additional data on any of these children at present. so I will not give them their own sections on this web page as of yet. See the register report below for what little I have on them.
