I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to William J. Johnson.
William J. Johnson was born ca 1821/22 (per 1870 census) or ca 1826/27 (per 1880) census. His tombstone shows "1823" as birth place. He was born in South Carolina. I don't know for sure, but I suspect he was born in Marion District, though he was in Horry later on.
I don't know who William's parents were. There are numerous suspects. I do strongly believe that he was a brother of (or somehow closely related to) John James Johnson (c1825) of Marion and Horry. They lived two houses apart in 1870 and next to each other in 1880.
In 1830, William would have been about 3 to 7 years old, so if listed on the census, he would be in the 5-9 age category (born ca 1820/25), or in the "under 5" age group (ca 1825/30). ** Unfortunately, I don't yet have the 1830 enumerations for Horry, but I do have them for Marion, and there were quite a few households with an apparent son this age.
In 1840, William J. Johnson would have been about 13 to 17 years old. So if he was enumerated on the census he would be in the age 15-19 category (born ca 1820/25) or the 10-14 age group (c1825/30). There were several matches in Horry in 1840, but I couldn't say if any were him. I doubt it. In 1840 Marion there were a couple of suspects, but nothing concrete.
I did not find William J. Johnson on the 1850 census, in either Horry or Marion, at least not where I'm sure it was him. There were several "William" Johnsons in each county. In Horry and Marion, there were no William's who matched this William's age as it should be in 1850.
William J. Johnson married Emma Elizabeth B. --- before 1854, in SC. I don't know her maiden name, but she was born ca 1821/22 ("1822" per tombstone) in SC. In 1870 she was listed as "Emma", and in 1880 as "Elizabeth", in both cases the ages matched up, so it seems as if her full name was "Emma Elizabeth", but it is possible that "Emma" from 1870 and "Elizabeth" from 1880 were two different wives. Her tombstone gives "Elizabeth B.", possibly meaning that her maiden name could begin with "B".
I did not find William and Emma on the 1860 census, in either Horry or Marion District.
William and Emma were listed on the 1870 census, in Dog Bluff Township. They were 2 houses from John James Johnson (c1825), whom I strongly believe could be his brother. I have no direct proof of that relation yet, but it seems likely to me.

They were still in Dog Bluff for the 1880 census. They were next door John James Johnson (c1825) this time (John's suspected brother). In fact, John and Iris' son Joseph seemed to be head of the household where William and family were residing. This strongly suggests a close family relationship. Either that, or the census taker forgot to increment the household number when moving from Joseph's house to William's.

Both William and Elizabeth seemed to have died in the year 1890 according to their tombstones. They are buried at Mount Herman Baptist Church in Horry County.
William and Emma had at least three children, as proven by the 1870 and 1880 census. I have only a little bit of data on them so far (from census records, and cemetery records) so I'll not give them their own sections here at this time.
