Revision History:
  • 12 Nov 2009 - Added a little more information about the family, nothing major: details from 1910 census entry, more on DNA testing.

  • 13 Dec 2008 - Added comment about DNA testing proving Lon is father of Marvin Grant.

  • 31 Aug 2008 – Reformatted and updated by Marty Grant.

I (Marty Grant) am a Great Great Grandson of Carroll Alonso Patterson.

Carroll Alonso Patterson was born Feb 1880 per the 1880 census which lists him as 4 months old and born in February. His death certificate (died 9 Feb 1922) lists his birth date as 6 Mar 1876. That doesn’t work with his 1880 entry at all. I’m assuming that the 1880 census is more accurate because his parents (one of whom was presumably the informant) knew his proper age and gave it to the census taker.

He was probably named "Carroll" after his father, and "Alonzo" after his Uncle Alonzo Cathey. He was generally known as either "Lon" or "Lonso." When my Great Grandfather Marvin R. Grant spoke of him, he called him "Lonso."

Lon Patterson was a son of Carroll Moore Patterson and Lavina Elizabeth Cathey. This is proven by him being at home with them on the 1880 census, and listed as their "son."  It is also proven by his death certificate, showing his father as "Carroll Patterson" and mother as "Lavina Cathey."

Lon was home with his parents for the 1880 census in Swain Co, NC, "Carrel A." age 4 months, born Feb. His family lived in the Grassy Branch area of Swain County, some of which is now under the waters of Fontana Lake, west of Bryson City.

Lon was not home with his parents for the 1900 census, nor have I been able to find him on that census. He would have been 20 years old, so could have been anywhere on his own, or just missed for some reason. He may also have been in another county working, or at school. I did an exhaustive search for him but came up empty.

Lon Patterson had a relationship with his neighbor Hattie Thermudas Grant that resulted in a child born out of wedlock (born 13 Jan 1902). Hattie was born 18 Oct 1879 in Swain Co., NC a daughter of John Patton Grant and Darthula Jane Evans. I have no knowledge of what happened between them, but there is no paperwork that proves that Lon is the father of the child (Marvin R. Grant). Marvin told me himself who his father was, but only said that Lon died and he was then raised by his Grant grandparents. He didn't go into details, nor did I ask. Lon died in 1922 when Marvin was 20 years old, so his story is a little inaccurate, but typical of an out of wedlock birth.

Hattie Grant wasn't the only one in her family having children out of wedlock. Two of her sisters also had children around the same time, without benefit of marriage. John Patton Grant moved the family out of there shortly afterwards, perhaps because of this trend. They moved to Union Co., GA where Marvin R. Grant was raised far away from his father and other Patterson relatives.

My Grandparents (Garland and Luella Grant) told me that when Marvin was a teenager (ca 1918 or so), he was working as a laborer on a big project (either a road or perhaps helping to build Fontana Lake or some other TVA project). While doing that work Marvin discovered that his father Lon Patterson was on the same job. They talked briefly, and as far as we know this was the only time they ever met.

On 15 Jun 1907, Lon Patterson married Nora B. Cambey in Swain Co, NC. Their marriage record showed both as residents of Swain County, "Lon" age 25, and Nora age 19. They were married at Chris Cambey's home (her father). Nora B. Cambey was born April 1888 in Swain Co, NC, daughter of Christopher Isaac Cambey and Mary Jane Jenkins.

Lon Patterson apparently didn't like census takers for he was missing in 1910, just as he had been back in 1900. He should have been in Swain County at that time, but wasn't listed.

There is a listing on the 1910 census in Swain County in  Forneys Creek Township for an Alonzo Patterson, age 32 listed as a widower. This fits age-wise, but is this the same person? If so where was his wife and child? Here is the entry just in case it is the same person:

John R. L. Cole, Head, 31 married once 8 years, NC-NC-NC, Merchant / Dry Goods
Margartt, wife 30, 3 children born 2 living
Ransom R. son 6
Oliver P. son, 3
John Smith, boarder 45 widowed
James E. Coward (or Connard), boarder, 47, single TN-TN-TN
James R. Teague, boarder, 37 single, NC-NC-NC
James L. Cooper, boarder 28
Alonzo Patterson, boarder, 32 widowed, NC-NC-NC.

All of the boarders were listed as Laborers and Carpenters. I think the above is Carroll Alonso Patterson, but mistakenly listed as widowed. He was a hired laborer living away from his wife and child at the time and whomever gave the data to the census taker didn’t know him well enough to give accurate information. I could be wrong about that, but it makes sense. It does leave the location of Nora and their daughter a mystery.

Lon and Nora were listed on the 1920 census in Swain County in Forney Creek Township. His occupation was listed as Saw Miller. He was listed as owning the farm he lived on, but I didn't find any deeds in his name. Perhaps he inherited some land from his parents who died in 1914 and 1917.

I found Lon Patterson's name mentioned in the Court Minutes for Swain County a few times, but have not yet abstracted those records to see what they pertained to.

Lon Patterson died on 9 Feb 1922 in Bryson City, Swain Co, NC. His death certificate reported his cause of death as something like "Calea Cistntion and Mitral Regurgitation". I'm sure that is spelled wrong, but it was hard to read. Mitral Regurgitation is a type of heart disease. He was only about 42 years old when he died.

Lon Patterson is buried near his parents at the Sawyer Cemetery in Swain County. His grave is marked by a very small stone (the size of a brick) that says simply "Lon Patterson" with no dates.

I wasn’t able to find Nora Cambey Patterson on the 1930 census. She may have died by then, or perhaps remarried. I did find their daughter Nora living in Asheville, Buncombe Co., NC. She was a boarder in a large household.

I don't know when Nora died, but she is buried beside her husband with a small brick-like stone that reads "Nora Patterson." I found no death certificate for her in North Carolina. She may have died out of state, or perhaps no certificate was filed for some reason.

I've been to Lon and Nora's graves a couple of times. I often wonder if Nora knew about Lon's illegitimate son, or if that was something that was kept secret. None of the Pattersons that I've been in touch with were aware of this fact. (Cats out of the bag now!) If Lon had lived longer, perhaps the Grant family and the Patterson family might have become reacquainted a little sooner.

Children of Carroll Alonzo Patterson and Hattie T. Grant and Nora Cambey. Lon Patterson had one child out of wedlock with Hattie Grant, a son Marvin R. Grant born in 1902. Marvin was my Great Grandfather. I have found no paper evidence that Marvin is his son, but Marvin told me so, and the Pattersons and Grants were neighbors at the time. Thanks to DNA testing, we now know for certain that Marvin R. Grant is a son of Lon Patterson.

Lon Patterson and wife Nora Cambey had one child, a daughter named Willie Bell Patterson (some records list her as “Willa” instead of “Willie,” I don’t know which is correct). She was born 4 Apr 1909 in Swain County.

She married a Mr. Rexrode sometime after 1930. I haven’t been able to determine his name or anything else about him. They apparently had an adopted son named Charles Rexrode (he was the informant on Willie’s death certificate).

Willie Belle Patterson Rexrode died in Graham Co., NC on 8 Jan 1968 and is buried near her parents at the Sawyer Cemetery. Her stone says "Willabell Rexrode" with no dates.
