I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grandson of C. M. Patterson and Lavina Cathey Patterson. Carroll Moore Patterson was born 7 Mar 1832 (per tombstone) in Macon Co, NC. He was often listed by his initials "C. M." on records. His middle name Moore is obviously in honor of his mother's family. I'm not sure where the name Carroll might have come from. C. M.'s father had a sister Sarah who married William Carroll but that was 6 years after C. M. was born. Perhaps the two families were already related or well acquainted before then. C. M. is a son of Samuel Patterson and Jane Moore. This is proven by the 1850 census, and was also common family knowledge among some descendants. The family left Macon Co, NC very shortly after C. M. was born, and moved to nearby Union Co, GA before 1837. C. M. Patterson was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census in Union Co, GA, listed in the age 5-9 category (born ca 1830/35). He was home with his parents for the 1850 census in Union Co, GA, listed as "Carroll Patterson", age 17 (born ca 1832/33), and born in NC. I have not found C. M. Patterson on the 1860 census. He was not home with his parents, nor was he yet married. He would have been about 28 years old then, so could have been anywhere on his own. He was not listed in the Union Co, GA census for that year, though I suspect he was still living there. For the Civil War, C. M. Patterson enlisted in the Confederate Army on 31 Aug 1861. He signed up with Company K, 23rd Regiment as a Private. He enlisted under the name "C. M. Patterson". He was discharged on 13 Oct 1861. C. M. Patterson married Lavina Elizabeth Cathey on 22 Dec 1861 in Union Co, GA. Lavina was born 29 Jul 1844 (per tombstone) in Union Co, GA (now Towns Co, GA), a daughter of William H. Cathey and Nancy Matilda Carter. Apparently his first stint in the Army wasn't enough, for he joined again about 6 months after his marriage. He enlisted in Company B, 7th Battalion, North Carolina Cavalry on 5 Jul 1862 as a Private. He enlisted under the name "Carroll M. Patterson", resident of Towns Co, GA. He enlisted in Clay Co, NC (where he had lots of cousins). Carroll (and his entire Company, I believe) was transferred on 3 Aug 1863 to Company F, 65th Regiment, North Carolina Troops. He was present and accounted for through December 1863 when he apparently deserted. He took the Oath of Allegiance to the United States in Chattanooga, Tennessee on 22 Mar 1864. My cousin Carroll Green told me that after taking the oath, C. M. Patterson joined the Union Army and served out west somewhere for the duration. When he got back home after the war, this caused a serious rift with his family, and especially his father who was a staunch Confederate. His father Samuel had been a Captain during the "Indian Wars" (1838), and was a Captain of his own "Union Invincibles" in Union Co, GA (home guard) during the Civil War. Adding fuel to the rift was the fact that Carroll's brothers had also served in the Confederate cause, and one of them (Julius) had lost his life serving for the south. Apparently all of this was too much, and C. M. and his father never reconciled. I don't know if this was also true for his siblings, but he soon left the area, and I have no way of knowing if contact was maintained or not. After the war was over C. M. and Lavina left Georgia and moved into what is now Swain County, North Carolina (then still part of Macon County). They were there before 1866 (based on the birth place of a child born that year). They moved to the Grassy Creek area, which is a branch of the Tennessee River west of present Bryson City. About half of this creek is now part of Fontana Lake. C. M. and family were listed on the 1870 census in Macon Co, NC in Alarka Township. This entire area became Swain County in 1871. Coincidentally (or not) they were just 6 houses from the only other Patterson family in the county: A. L. Patterson (c1840), born in SC, relationship to them unknown. (This is Amos Lewis Patterson, not much else known of his family yet). 1870 census abstract: (Explanation of this census) (Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age) 1870 MACON CO, NC Page 265B House/Family # 36/ 36--ALARKA Twp PATTERSON C 38 M W FARMER GA 1831/1832 PATTERSON LAVINA 25 F W GA 1844/1845 PATTERSON JULIUS D 7 M W GA 1862/1863 PATTERSON NANCY A 5 F W NC 1864/1865 PATTERSON WILLIAM H 1 M W NC 1868/1869 In 1871 Swain County was formed from Macon and Jackson County, including the section of Macon where the Pattersons resided. He was 81 years old. He was buried at the Sawyer Cemetery. I've been there a couple of times. His stone has his name as "C. M. Patterson". Lavina Elizabeth Cathey Patterson died on 21 May 1917 (per tombstone, death certificate says 23 May 1917) in Swain Co, NC. She was 72 years old. She is buried beside C. M. at the Sawyer Cemetery in Swain County. Her name on the stone says "Mrs. C. M. Patterson". Lavina's death certificate is interesting, it lists her as “Levinia” Patterson, daughter of “Jo. Cathey” and “Jain Boyd” both parents are incorrect as is often the case on death certificates. Her son W. H. Patterson was the informant. You think he would know her parents names for he knew both of them personally, in fact William H. Cathey, his grandfather, was probably his own namesake. |
Children of Carroll Moore Patterson and Lavina Elizabeth Cathey. C. M. and Lavina Patterson had eight children, all of whom lived to adulthood. They are all proven by the various census records, and also by other records. |
Julius Decatur Patterson was born 22 Jan 1863 (per tombstone) in Union Co, GA (or Towns Co, GA). He was home with his parents for the 1870 census (“Julius D.” age 7) and in 1880 (“Julius D.” age 17). He was probably named for his uncle Julius Patterson who had been killed in the Civil War just a few months earlier, and also named for his uncle Joseph Decatur Patterson. Decatur Patterson married Amanda J. Jenkins ca 1885/86 in Swain Co, NC. Amanda was born 21 Mar 1870 (per tombstone) in Tennessee. I'm not sure which county, but probably an eastern one. She was a child of Francis Marion Jenkins and Rutha Hyde (as proven by the 1880 census and her death certificate). Decatur and Amanda were listed on the 1900 census in Swain County in Nantahala Township, next door to his parents. 1900 census abstract: (Explanation of this census) (Note: The birth dates given in 1900 were part of the original census record) 1900 SWAIN CO, NC Page House/Family # 138/ 139--NANTAHALA Twp PATTERSON DEKATER J HD W M JAN 1863 37 M 14 GA NC GA FARMER PATTERSON AMANDA J WF W F MAR 1870 30 M 14 6 6 TN NC NC PATTERSON SAMUEL R S W M MAY 1887 13 S NC GA TN FARM LABOR PATTERSON WILEY E S W M JUL 1889 10 S NC GA TN FARM LABOR PATTERSON HESTER V D W F DEC 1891 8 S NC GA TN PATTERSON FLORA R D W F JUN 1894 5 S NC GA TN PATTERSON VERGIA I D W F JAN 1896 4 S NC GA TN PATTERSON LILLY M D W F JUN 1898 1 S NC GA TN Decatur and Amanda were listed on the 1910 census in Swain Co, NC, in Nantahala Township. I don't know which is correct, though death certificates are almost always filed within a short time of the event, whereas tombstones can be placed years later. He was 54 years old. He was buried at the Sawyer Cemetery near his parents. Amanda was listed on the 1920 census in Swain County in Nantahala Township: Amanda Patterson, head, 40, widowed, TN-TN-NC; W. Ed., son 30, NC-GA-TN; Fred son 19, Minnie, dau 14; Floyd son 12; Walter son 10; Lillie Stanberry, dau 21 married; Clyde, grand son 4 2/12; Joel, grand son 1 1/12. Amanda Jenkins Patterson died on 31 Jul 1928 (per death certificate and tombstone) in Swain Co, NC. She is buried at the Sawyer Cemetery in Swain County beside her husband. |
Nancy Angeline Patterson was born ca 1864/65 (per 1870 census) or 14 Apr 1866 (I don't know where I got this date from). She was born in Macon Co, NC (now Swain Co, NC). I'm not sure of the source, but I have her middle name as "Angeline". She was probably named "Nancy" after her grandmother Nancy Carter Cathey. Nancy was home with her parents for the 1870 census (“Nancy A.” age 5), and in 1880 (“Nancy A.” age 14). Nancy married William A. Revis ca 1886 in Swain Co, NC. He was born March 1863 somewhere in North Carolina, county unknown. He could be the same William Revis born ca 1863 in Madison Co., NC, son of Thomas H. Revis (c1832 NC) and his first wife (name unknown). I don’t know for sure this is the same William Revis, but he is the only one in the region who fits. They are on the 1900 census in Cherokee Co., NC, Notla Township: Wm A. Revis, head, Mar 1863, 37, married 14 years, NC-NC-NC; Nancy A. wife Apr 1866, 34, 2 children born, 2 living, NC-GA-GA; Charley son, Feb 1890 10; Louis D. son Oct 1893 6. They are still in Notla for the 1910 census: William A. Revis, Head, 47 married once 23 years, NC-NC-NC; Nannie A. wife 44, married once 23 years, 2 children born 2 living NC-NC-GA; Mary E. daughter 23, Louis D. son 16. They are in Fannin Co., GA for the 1920 census in Flint Hill District in McCaysville town: William A. Revis, Head, 56, NC-NC-NC, Clergyman; Nancy, wife 53, GA-US-US; Mary A. daughter 32 NC-NC-GA. Nancy Angeline Patterson Revis died sometime between 1920 and 1930 either in Fannin Co., GA or perhaps in McMinn Co., TN. William was listed on the 1930 census in McMinn Co., TN in Etowah town: William A. Revis, Head, 67 widowed, born NC-NC-NC, Preacher; Mary E. daughter, 40 single, NC-NC-GA, Sales Lady in Dry Goods Store. William A. Revis died on 28 Jan 1935 in Fannin Co., GA. |
William Homes Patterson was born September 1868 (per 1900 census) in Macon (now Swain) Co, NC. He was probably named after his grandfather William H. Cathey. The name "Homes" (or Holmes) goes back several generations to William H. Patterson's ancestor Isabella Holmes, wife of William Bryson. The name "Holmes" was used often among their descendants as a middle name. William was home with his parents for the 1870 census (“William H.” age 1) and in 1880 (“William H.” age 12). William married Mary Adeline Delozier on 29 Dec 1892 in Swain Co, NC. Their marriage record gave a lot of information. He was listed as "W. H. Patterson", age 24, son of "C. M. and L. E. Patterson", both living. She was listed as "M. A. Delozier" age 16, daughter of "J. R. and M. R. E. Delozier", father dead, mother living. They were married by C. C. Bryson, JP at home of M. R. E. Delozier in Nantahala Township. Witnesses were: T. M. Delozier, R. R. Ashe, and C. R. Ashe. Mary Adeline Delozier was born April 1876 (per 1900 census) in Swain Co, NC, daughter of Jesse R. Delozier and Mary R. Emaline Sherrill. William and Addie were listed on the 1900 census in Swain Co, NC in Nantahala Township. 1900 census abstract: (Explanation of this census) (Note: The birth dates given in 1900 were part of the original census record) 1900 SWAIN CO, NC Page House/Family # 4/ 4--NANTAHALA Twp PATTERSON WILLIAM H HD W M SEP 1868 31 M 7 NC NC NC FARMER PATTERSON MARY A WF W F APR 1876 24 M 7 2 2 NC NC NC PATTERSON FANIBER D W F MAR 1894 6 S NC NC NC PATTERSON SAMUEL C S W M FEB 1898 2 S NC NC NC They were listed on the 1910 census in Swain County in Nantahala Township. Rebecca Marinda Patterson was born ca 1870/71 in Macon (now Swain) Co, NC. She was probably named for her aunt Rebecca Cathey. Her (Rebecca M. Patterson) nickname was "Rindy." She was home with her parents for the 1880 census (“Rebecca M.” age 9). She married Deley B. "Zack" Guffey on 11 Jul 1888 in Swain Co, NC. Their marriage record gives them as "Deley B. Guffey" age 22, son of "J. M. and P. E. Guffey", both living, and "Rebecca M. Patterson" age 17, daughter of "C. M. & Viney Patterson", both living. They were married by C. C. Bryson, JP in Nantahala Township. Witnesses were: H. C. Guffey and William Snider. Zack Guffey was born Feb 1866 in Rutherford Co., NC, son of James M. Guffey and Mary E. Smiley. Zack and Rindy moved to Cherokee Co, NC after marriage and are listed there on the 1900 census in Murphy township: Deal B. Guffey, head, Feb 1866, 34, married 12 years, NC-NC-NC; Marinda, wife Feb 1871, 29, 0 children, GA-NC-GA; They are still there in 1910 though most of the columns of data are blank. They must not have been home when the census taker came around: Deal Guffey; Rinda, wife; Wade, son. I couldn’t find them in 1920. Son Wade Guffey was still in Cherokee, but living with another family, no relationship given. Deley B. “Zack” Guffey died in Cherokee on 22 Aug 1926 (per death certificate). I don’t know when or where Rebecca Marinda Patterson Guffey died, though she was still alive when her husband died. |
Julia Lucinda Patterson was born 9 Apr 1873 (per Delayed Birth Certificate) in Swain Co, NC. Her birth record gives her full name, and lists her birth as in Bryson City, and gives her parents as "C. M. Patterson" and "Lavina E. Cathey". (Swain Co, NC Birth Records Book 7 page 205) She was probably named in part after her aunt Martha Lucinda Cathey and her aunt Julie Ann Patterson. Julia was home with her parents for the 1880 census (“Julie L.” age 7). She married Nelson Thaddeus Green on 24 Mar 1889 in Swain Co, NC. Their marriage record gave them as "T. N. Green" age 21, son of William and Melvina Green, both living, and "Julie L. Patterson" age 15, daughter of "C. M. and Lovina E. Patterson", both living. They were married by C. C. Bryson, JP in Nantahala Township. Witnesses were: W. S. Green and J. W. Mashburn. They were listed on the 1900 census in Swain Co, NC, in Nantahala Township: Thaddeus N. Green, Head, Jun 1867, 33 married 12 years, NC-NC-NC; Julia L. wife Apr 1873, 27, 4 children born, 4 living; GA-GA-GA; Harley E. son Sep 1890, 9 NC-NC-GA; Maud B. dau Sep 1892, 7; Bessie L. dau Sep 1896, 3; Thaddeus T. son Nov 1898, 1; John T. His grave was moved to Lauada Cemetery when Judson was flooded by Fontana Lake. Sometime after his death, Julia remarried to William Henry Green, who was a nephew of her first husband. He was born Dec 1881 in Swain County, a son of Elias David Green and Sarah (---). Elias is Nelson Thaddeus Green’s older brother. They are on the 1910 census in Swain County in Nantahala Township: William H. Lavina M. "Jennie" Patterson was born 9 Sep 1878 (per death certificate) in Swain Co, NC. She was listed as "Lavina M. Patterson" on the 1880 census, but as "Jennie" on all subsequent records that I've found. Jennie Patterson was home with her parents for the 1880 census (“Lavina M.” age 2), and with them in 1900 (“Jennie” age 21). Jennie married Marion Curtis Fox on 19 Oct 1901 in Cherokee Co, NC. They were married by J. T. Hayes, JP. Curtis Fox was born12 May 1881 (per death certificate), probably in Cherokee Co, NC. His parents are William Fox and Lavina Molten (per death certificate). Curtis and Jennie were in Swain Co, NC for the 1910 census, with Jennie's parents residing with them. 1910 census abstract: (Explanation of this census) (Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age) 1910 SWAIN CO, NC Page House/Family # 59/ 59--NANTAHALA Twp FOX M C HD M W 29 M 1 9 NC NC NC FARMER 1880/1881 FOX JENNIE WF F W 32 M 1 9 3 3 NC NC NC 1877/1878 FOX MILLARD S M W 6 S NC NC NC 1903/1904 FOX LENARD D F W 4 S NC NC NC 1905/1906 FOX EDNA D F W 2 S NC NC NC 1907/1908 PATTERSON C M FL M W 78 M 1 50 NC NC NC NONE 1831/1832 PATTERSON L E ML F W 65 M 1 50 8 8 NC NC NC 1844/1845 PATTERSON JAMES BL M W 29 S NC NC NC 1880/1881 In 1920 they were in Swain County, Nantahala Township. Carroll Alonso Patterson was born 6 Mar 1880 in Swain Co, NC. He was probably named after his father Carroll Moore Patterson, and after his uncle Alonzo Cathey. Lon Patterson married Nora Cambey on 15 Jun 1907 in Swain Co, NC. See his own page for more information. |
James Wesley Patterson was born 20 May 1881 (per tombstone) in Swain Co, NC. I don't know anyone in the family he might have been named for. He was home with his parents for the 1900 census (“James W.” born May 1881, age 19), and with them in 1910 (“James” age 29), and with his sister Jennie in 1920 (“James” age 39). I didn’t find James on the 1930 census. He died on 17 Apr 1969 in Swain Co, NC. He is buried at the Sawyer Cemetery in Swain Co, NC near his parents. He never married. |
