I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin, 9 times removed of James Roberts, assuming that various weak connections can be proven.
Special thanks to Dr. Merrit E. Roberts of Lompoc, CA for information shared on this family in his book "Roberts-Allen Families", 1985. He has data in his book on James Roberts, that I won't repeat here, except what I can find myself in the various records. Although I think his book was excellent, and a worthwhile addition to my library, I did find much in it that was based on various assumptions, some of which I totally disagree with, so I'm probably going to contradict much of what he wrote on the early Roberts families. I do this with no disrespect towards Dr. Roberts, but only for the sake of presenting evidence that he may not have had access to, or in presenting my own alternate interpretations of certain data. When possible (and practical) I'll present our cases side by side if they differ significantly, so the reader can decide which is more likely, or possibly come up with a third point of view.
James Roberts (Jr) was born before ca 1729, presumably in Craven Precinct, NC. I base this birth date on his first found record which was dated 1750 when he purchased land from his brother Samuel Roberts. Assuming he was at least 21 then, he would have to be born ca 1729 or prior.
James is a proven son of James and Isabell Roberts, and was named in James' Will dated 24 Jul 1745 in Craven Co, NC.
James' first record was his being named in his father's Craven Co, NC Will on 24 Jul 1745.
On 7 Jan 1750 James Roberts witnessed the Craven Co, NC Will of Nathaniel Tucker (of Onslow). Other witnesses included John Holmes and Ann Frazer. (Craven Co, NC Deeds & Wills book 5 page 163).
On 28 Aug 1750 James Roberts purchased 100 acres on Dawsons Creek from Samuel Roberts (his brother) for 5 shillings. (Craven Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 498).
The following day, 29 Aug 1750, he purchased another 100 acres from Samuel, also on Dawsons Creek and the "Race Path". (Craven Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 500).
James Roberts made his Will on 28 Dec 1761 in Craven Co, NC. He named no wife, so she may have died before him. He names his son James Roberts and daughters: Mary, and Cynthia. He named Richard Roberts as his administrator. I haven't seen the original Will, so I'm not sure if he also stated a relationship to this Richard Roberts. The Will was not proven until 1764. (Craven Co, NC Wills)
James Roberts received a land patent on 27 Nov 1762 for more land on Dawsons Creek. I'm not sure if this is James who made his Will in 1761, or his son James. (Colony of North Carolina 1735-1764 Land Patents Book 15 page 467).
James Roberts Estate record was dated 1763 in Craven Co, NC, so he died about that time. I haven't looked at the contents of his Estate file yet, so I'm not sure what else is known about him.
The Will of James Roberts dated 28 Dec 1761 names three children.
Mary Roberts was named in her father James Roberts' Will of 1761 as daughter "Mary". No surname was given, so I don't know if she was married by then or not. I have nothing else on Mary at present.
Cinthia Roberts was named in her father James Roberts' Will of 1761 as daughter "Cinthia". No surname was given, so I don't know if she was married by then or not. I have nothing else on Cinthia at present.
James Roberts was named in his father James Roberts' Will of 1761 as son "James". James was probably born ca 1741 or before. He made his own Will in 1774, and died ca 1782 in Craven Co, NC. See his own page for additional information.
