[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am a 2nd cousin, 9 times removed of Samuel Roberts, assuming that various weak connections can be proven.
Special thanks to Dr. Merrit E. Roberts of Lompoc, CA for information shared on this family in his book "Roberts-Allen Families", 1985. He has data in his book on Samuel Roberts, that I won't repeat here, except what I can find myself in the various records. Although I think his book was excellent, and a worthwhile addition to my library, I did find much in it that was based on various assumptions, some of which I totally disagree with, so I'm probably going to contradict much of what he wrote on the early Roberts families. I do this with no disrespect towards Dr. Roberts, but only for the sake of presenting evidence that he may not have had access to, or in presenting my own alternate interpretations of certain data. When possible (and practical) I'll present our cases side by side if they differ significantly, so the reader can decide which is more likely, or possibly come up with a third point of view.
Samuel Roberts was born before ca 1729, presumably in Craven Precinct, NC. I base this birth date on his first found record which was dated 1750 when he sold land to his brother James Roberts. Assuming he was at least 21 then, he would have to be born ca 1729 or prior.
Samuel is a proven son of James and Isabell Roberts, and was named in James' Will dated 24 Jul 1745 in Craven Co, NC.
Samuel's first record was his being named in his father's Craven Co, NC Will on 24 Jul 1745.
On 28 Aug 1750 Samuel Roberts sold 100 acres on Dawsons Creek to James Roberts (his brother) for 5 shillings. Witnesses were Charles Shawnlf, John Cook and Garet Hyman. (Craven Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 498).
On the next day, 29 Aug 1750, Samuel sold another 100 acres to James Roberts. This land was on Dawsons Creek and the Race Path. Witnesses were CHarles Chenwolf and John Cook. (Craven Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 500).
On 23 Dec 1763 Samuel Roberts was mentioned as an adjoining land owner in Craven Co, NC on upper Broad Creek, adjoining a new Patent to William Speight. Upper Broad Creek is on the north side of the Neuse River and is the border between modern Craven and Pamlico Counties (Pamlico formed in 1872). (Colony of North Carolina 1735-1764 Land Patents book 17 page 22)
Samuel Roberts was listed on a 1769 Craven Co, NC Tax list.
The above is the last sure record I have for Samuel. There was a Samuel Roberts listed on the 1780 tax list of Dobbs Co, NC and that may be the same person, but I don't know if it is.
So far, I've found no records showing if Samuel were married and if he had children.
