I (Marty Grant) am a 1st cousin, 10 times removed of James Roberts, assuming that various weak connections can be proven.

Special thanks to Dr. Merrit E. Roberts of Lompoc, CA for information shared on this family in his book "Roberts-Allen Families", 1985. He has data in his book on James Roberts, that I won't repeat here, except what I can find myself in the various records. Although I think his book was excellent, and a worthwhile addition to my library, I did find much in it that was based on various assumptions, some of which I totally disagree with, so I'm probably going to contradict much of what he wrote on the early Roberts families. I do this with no disrespect towards Dr. Roberts, but only for the sake of presenting evidence that he may not have had access to, or in presenting my own alternate interpretations of certain data. When possible (and practical) I'll present our cases side by side if they differ significantly, so the reader can decide which is more likely, or possibly come up with a third point of view.

James Roberts was born before ca 1708, presumably in Craven Precinct, NC. I base this birth date on his first found record which was dated 1737 when he received several land patents. Assuming he was at least 21 then, he would have to be born ca 1716 or prior. It is possible he was much older than this, and that the 1737 records were not his first, just the first in this county. He had a two sons, both of legal age by 1750, so assuming they were at least 21 then, they would be born ca 1729 or before, pushing James' birth to ca 1708 or before (giving him 21 more years than his sons). So we can conclude that James Roberts was born before 1708, but how much earlier than that would be hard to guess at.

Dr. Merrit E. Roberts lists James as a son of John Roberts, son of Andrew Roberts Sr. I'm not sure what he based that on, and I haven't been able to find anything to support it, so far.

James Roberts was married to Isabell --- sometime prior to ca 1729.

James Roberts (c1708) didn't leave us alot of records, but he left a few.

On 17 Feb 1737 James Roberts received a 200 acre Patent for land on the "road of Great Contentnee" joining below the Ferry.  This patent may actually be for the James Roberts of old Dobbs Co, NC instead. (Colony of North Carolina 1735-1764 Land Patents Book 8 page 6)

On 29 Jun 1738 James Roberts received a 250 acre patent in Craven Co, NC on Cattle Swamp. (Colony of North Carolina 1735-1764 Land Patents Book 8 page 78)

On 12 Aug 1738 John and Margaret Ackis sold 270 acres to James Roberts on the west side of the Neuse River at the mouth of Dawsons Creek. (Craven Co, NC Deeds Book 1 page 111).

On 24 Jul 1745 James Roberts made a noncupative will (he didn't write it down, but told James Conaway what his wisher were). He named his sons Samuel Roberts, and James Roberts and daughter Margaret and wife "Isable". (Craven Co, NC Wills)

I didn't find anything on James' widow Isabell after the above Will.

Children

The Will of James Roberts dated 24 Jul 1745 names three children.

Samuel Roberts

James Roberts

Margaret Roberts

Samuel Roberts was born before ca 1729 in Craven Precinct, NC. He was named in his father James Roberts' Will of 1745 as son "Samuel".  Samuel was found in various Craven Co, NC records beginning with the 1745 Will, then next in 1750, 1763 and 1769. A Samuel Roberts appeared on a 1780 tax list in Dobbs Co, NC, but I don't know if it is the same person or not.

See his own page for additional information on Samuel Roberts, son of James and Isabell.

James Roberts was born before ca 1729 in Craven Precinct, NC. He was named in his father James Roberts' Will of 1745 as son "James". James was found in various Craven Co, NC records beginning with his father's 1745 will. He next appeared in 1750, 1761, and 1762. His estate was dated 1763, so he died around then.

See his own page for additional information on James Roberts, son of James and Isabell.

Margaret Roberts was named in her father James Roberts' Will of 1745 as daughter "Margaret". No surname was listed, so I don't know if she was married at that time or not. I have no further record of her.
