[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am a 6th Great Grandson of Edward Smith and one of his wives (not sure which one).
Special thanks to Emma Barrett Reeves (deceased) for information shared by her via correspondence and by her book "Tennessee Smithology", 1975.
I don’t know when Edward Smith was born. In her book, Mrs. Reeves stated that by tradition, Edward was 87 years old when he died in 1807, so using that age, that gives "1720" as an approximate birth date. This seems to be a good date to use, but I’d like to find some actual evidence to support it. I’d say it is probably accurate to within 10 to 20 years, just as a guess based on the known ages of some of his children.
I don’t know where Edward Smith was born. An old DAR application lists his birth place as Maryland, but I have no proof to go with that. He could have been born there, or just about anywhere else, such as Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina or even in Europe.
I have no record of Edward Smith’s parents, nor any clues as to who they might have been.
I have practically no early records on Edward Smith before his arrival in what is now Carter County, Tennessee. Some information has been gleaned from some early DAR applications, but I always consider that source as highly suspect, though worth noting here in case it is accurate, or partly so.
According to those DAR applications Mrs. Reeves information, Edward Smith married Catherine Stumph in 1739. I have been told by Robert T. Nave that this is not correct, or at least that "Stumph" wasn’t her surname. I don’t have any hard facts to go with this so I’ll just mention it and say it needs further study. I’m leaving her name this way in my files until I find some other evidence one way or the other.
Apparently Edward’s first wife died before 1757, for in that year he supposedly married Catherine Stonecypher in Culpeper County, Virginia.
By 1761, Edward and family had moved in the western regions of North Carolina, in the area encompassed within Rowan County (which had no western border at the time). They were still in North Carolina in the 1770's for sure, based on the birth places of several members of the family. ** I have not yet checked the early Rowan County records for evidence of Edward Smith living there.
In 1776 the District of Washington was created as a new western division (not quite a county yet) which encompassed some of north west North Carolina and much of present day Tennessee (if not all of it). I don’t think the Edward Smith family was already living there at the time.
In 1777, Burke, Wilkes and Washington Counties were formed. Burke was formed from western Rowan County, Wilkes from western Surry and part of old Washington District, and Washington County was formed from Washington District, (now Tennessee). Apparently, Edward Smith was living within the bounds of the new Burke County when it was formed. * More research is needed in Burke County records.
There was an Edward Smith in Wilkes Co, NC records in the mid 1780's. I don’t know if it is this same Edward or another, but keep in mind that Wilkes County at that time bordered what is now Carter Co, TN. He was listed there in Court records in 1785, and sold land in 1787 on Kings Creek.
Our Edward Smith was in present day Carter Co, TN by 1783 when he began receiving North Carolina land grants in Washington County, Tennessee on the Watauga River and Iron Mountain.
Edward Smith was listed in Washington County Court many times in the 1780's as a juror, on road juries, etc.
In 1790, all of present Tennessee was ceded by North Carolina to the Federal Government and was organized as the "Territory South of the Ohio River".
The 1790 census is lost for this area (if it was taken at all there).
In 1796, Tennessee was admitted to the union as a State. That same year Carter County was formed from the part of Washington County where the Smiths resided.
Edward Smith was listed on the 1796 Carter County tax list.
Edward Smith was listed on the 1798 Carter County tax list.
Apparently Catherine Stonecypher Smith died sometime before 1798, for in that year, he married another Catherine Stonecypher, niece of the first one. I’ve not seen a marriage record for them, so I’m not sure what it is based on other than Family Tradition. Her Will (in 1832) named only one child, who happened to be the youngest child of Edward Smith, born ca 1799, so that would support this Catherine being a 3rd wife, marrying ca 1798.
The 1800 census in lost for Tennessee.
On 11 Feb 1807, Edward Smith made his Will in Carter County, Tennessee. Mrs. Reeves provided a transcript in her book, and I also have a copy of an original hand-made copy made by Edward’s grandson-in-law Charles Noden George in the early 1800's, and was shared with me by Jeff George who has the original copy.
In his will he named "my four sons, Nicholas, Jacob, William, and Daniel". He named wife "Catherine". "my youngest daughter Nancy", "the heirs of John Smith, deceased", and daughters: Catherine Peeveyhouse, Sarah Bowman, Margaret Gabert, Susannah Campbell, heirs of my daughter Mary Smith, heirs of my daughter Elizabeth Dunkin. Wife Catherine and son Daniel Smith and Julius Dugger, Esquire as Executors. Signed: Edward Smith. Witnessed by Matthias Wagoner and John Heaton.
The Will was acknowledged in court on 15 Apr 1807 by Nathaniel Taylor, Godfrey Carringer and William Boyd, so that means Edward had died by that date.
The 1810 census is lost for Tennessee.
The 1820 census is lost for Eastern Tennessee, including Carter County.
In 1830, widow Catherine Stonecypher Smith was not listed on the census, so probably was living with her daughter Nancy Smith Heaton. There was a female with Vaught Heaton (her son-in-law) aged 70-79 (born ca 1750/60). This is probably Catherine.
Catherine Smith made her Will on 14 Apr 1832 in Carter Co, TN and named her daughter Nancy Heaton. She signed with a mark, and the will was witnessed by Nelson Ball and David Brumitt. This Will was included in Mrs. Reeves book and she noted that it was shared with her by Robert Nave.
Edward Smith and his first two wives had eleven children, and he and his third wife Catherine had one child for a total of twelve, all of which were named in Edward’s 1807 Will. Without accurate marriage dates for Edward’s first two wives, and birth dates for the children, it is not quite possible to determine which child belongs to which wife, though I have tentatively assigned 8 kids to Edward’s first wife Catherine "Stumph", and 3 to his second wife "Catherine Stonecypher", and one (Nancy) to the 3rd wife, which is proven by her Will. All of these children are probably not listed in their correct order of birth.
Nicholas died sometime before 1830 in Carter Co, TN. His widow was still living there as of 1850.
See his own page for additional information.
Jacob Smith was born presumably in Virginia or Maryland. He married Mary Dugger. See his own page for additional information.
William Smith. I have no approximate birth date for William Smith yet. He married Jane — and moved to Wilson Co, TN where he died in 1842. See his own page for additional information.
John Smith. I have no approximate birth date for John Smith yet. He married Phoebe Mayfield. See his own page for additional information.
Catherine Smith. I don't know when or where she was born. She is a proven child of Edward Smith as named in his 1807 Will as daughter "Catherine Peeveyhouse". I don't know if her mother was Edward's first or second wife, since I don't know her birth date.
Mrs. Reeves thought she was married to John Peeveyhouse, though I don't know what proof she had that John was her husband.
John was listed on the 1798 Carter County Tax list. Other than that, I have no data on him.
There were no Peeveyhouses in Carter County by the 1830 census, and none there in 1840. More research is needed.
Margaret Smith. I don't know when or where she was born. She is a proven child of Edward Smith as named in his 1807 Will, as he named daughter "Margaret Gabert". I don't know if her mother was Edward's first or second wife, since I don't know her birth date.
Mrs. Reeves thought she was married to George Gabert, though I don't know what proof she had that her husband was George, and that they went to Kentucky.
I found three George Gabbert's in Kentucky on the 1820 census, one in Lincoln County, one in Mercer and one in Washington County. I originally suspected the one in Lincoln to be the same one, for his neighbors were many known Carter County names associated with the Smiths, including two Smiths, a Heaton, a Stout, a Duncan and other familiar names. This George and wife were both listed as age 45+, or born before 1775, so that fits. Other researchers claim that this George (of Lincoln) is not the same one. The George Gabbert of Mercer County was born ca 1762 in VA (per 1850 census) and was a Revolutionary War Pensioner.
Mary Smith. I don't know when or where she was born. She is a proven child of Edward Smith as named in his 1807 Will, though she was dead by then, as he named "the heirs of my daughter Mary Smith". I don't know if her mother was Edward's first or second wife, since I don't know her birth date.
Mrs. Reeves thought she was married to Samuel Smith, a probable relative (though how he is related is unknown).
Samuel Smith could be a first cousin to Mary, or perhaps he is a more distant relative, or not related at all, as there were other Smiths in the area who are not known to be related to the Edward Smith family. I have not seen any primary evidence yet that Samuel Smith was Mary's husband, so I'm not sure how Mrs. Reeves came to that conclusion, however, I'll work on the assumption that she was correct.
Samuel Smith was probably born ca 1750 or thereabouts. He and Mary Smith had to have married prior to ca 1776 in North Carolina somewhere. I don't know who Samuel's parents were.
Samuel Smith was listed on the 1796 and 1798 Carter Co, TN tax lists.
I have no other data on Samuel Smith yet. According to her father's 1807 Will, Mary Smith Smith was dead by then.
Mrs. Reeves shows Samuel Smith and Mary Smith as the parents of James, George and Samuel Smith. I'm not sure what proof there is that those belong to Samuel and Mary. James was born ca 1776 in NC, and George was born ca 1770/80. Samuel (Jr) was probably born in the same general time-frame.
Elizabeth Smith. I don't know when or where she was born. She is a proven child of Edward Smith as named in his 1807 Will, though she was dead by then, as he named "the heirs of my daughter Elizabeth Dunkin". I don't know if her mother was Edward's first or second wife, since I don't know her birth date.
All that Mrs. Reeves mentioned about her was that she married a Duncan, possibly Lawrence Duncan or Patrick Duncan.
I don't know if Elizabeth's husband was Lawrence Duncan or some other Mr. Duncan, but he is a good suspect. More research is needed.
Sarah Smith was born ca 1768 (per Mrs. Reeves book). I don't know where she was born. She is a proven child of Edward Smith as named in his 1807 Will as daughter "Sarah Bowman". I believe her mother was Edward's second wife Catherine Stonecypher (Sr).
All that Mrs. Reeves mentioned about her was that she married John Bowman and moved to Kentucky.
We can infer a few facts from available records. First, Sarah was married to her Mr. Bowman before 1807 (per her father's Will). As of the 1830 census, there were no "John" Bowmans in Carter County. There was a William Bowman (too young), a Peter Bowman (1770/80) who was old enough, an Elijah Bowman (too young) and an Elijah Bowman (1780/90) which is probably old enough.
If her husband was "John Bowman", then I could only assume she had died or already moved to Kentucky by 1830. There were several listed on the 1830 index, including one in each of these counties: Anderson, Bracken, Christian, Clay (2), Cumberland, Franklin, Jessamine, Logan, and Mercer. I have no way to narrow down which of these (if any of them) are the same John Bowman who married Sarah Smith.
According to Mrs. Reeves, Sarah Smith Bowman died "1838" (presumably in Kentucky).
Much more research is needed to sort out this branch of the family.
Susannah Smith was born ca 1770/71 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina (per 1850 census). I don't know what county, though I'd suspect Rowan County, but I'm not sure that is where the Smiths were ca 1771. She is a proven child of Edward Smith as named in his 1807 Will as daughter "Susannah Campbell". I believe her mother was Edward's second wife Catherine Stonecypher (Sr).
She married a Mr. Campbell in "1792" (per 1850 census), presumably in Washington (now Carter) Co, TN. I have not seen direct evidence yet of who her husband was, but according to Mrs. Reeves book, her husband was Isaac Campbell. According to the 1830 census, Isaac was born ca 1770/80. I don't know who his parents were, nor where he was born.
Isaac Campbell was listed on both the 1796 and 1798 Carter County Tax lists.
I would assume they were listed on the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census in Carter County, but unfortunately, those records are lost.
They were listed on the 1830 census in Carter Co, TN in a group of Campbells and Smiths, all probably closely related to one another (Zachariah, David and Elisha Campbell, and George, David and Ezekiel Smith and Mary Smith).

Susannah was listed as head of household on the 1850 census in Carter County, with three daughters still at home.

Susannah Smith Campbell must have died between 1850 and 1860, for I did not find her on the 1860 census. Her two daughters Matilda and Eliza were living together that year, but Susannah was not with them. I do not know if there is a comprehensive list of Isaac and Susannah's children, but I'd say that Hila, Matilda and Eliza are proven by being with Susannah in 1850. Mrs. Reeves also lists Daniel Campbell and Smith Campbell as their sons. They did live near Susannah, but I don't know what proof there is that they belong to her.
Daniel Smith was born 27 Feb 1778 (per Mrs. Reeves) in Virginia. He married Mary Grindstaff and moved to Dekalb Co, TN. See his own page for additional information.
Nancy Smith was born ca 1798/99 (per 1860 census) in Carter Co, TN. She was the only child of Edward Smith by his 3rd wife Catherine Stonecypher (Jr). She is a proven child of Edward Smith as named in his 1807 Will as "my youngest daughter Nancy Smith". She was also named in her mother's 1832 Will as daughter "Nancy Heaton".
Nancy Smith was probably with her parents for the 1800, and 1810 census records, though those are all lost for Carter Co, TN.
Sometime before ca 1817, Nancy Smith married Vaught Heaton in Carter Co, TN (no marriage record found). I've seen no direct proof of this marriage, but Nancy was married to a Mr. Heaton per her mother's Will, though his name was not mentioned. Other researchers show that Vaught Heaton was a son of John Heaton and Elizabeth Vaught. He was born ca 1790/1800 (per 1830 census).
They were listed on the 1830 census in Carter Co, TN. An older man (age 100+, born before 1730) was living with them. I don't know who this was, could it be Vaught's father John Heaton or perhaps a grandfather? An older woman (born ca 1750/60) was also there, and I think that is probably Nancy Smith's mother Catherine.

Vaught Heaton died sometime before ca 1836 in Carter Co, TN.
In "1836" (per 1850 census), Nancy Smith Heaton married a Mr. Morley. I've not seen any primary evidence yet, but in Mrs. Reeves book, she lists him as James Morley. I didn't find a marriage record for them.
** I don't have the 1840 census record yet, though I'd suspect they were listed in Carter Co, TN.
James Morley died sometime before 1850, for Nancy is listed as head of household on that census, apparently widowed.

Nancy Smith Heaton Morley had at least 5 children with her first husband Vaught Heaton (Catherine-1817*, Easter-1822*, Mary-1823*, John William-1828, and Edward Heaton-1831). *I don't know what the proof is for Catherine, Easter and Mary being Nancy's children. Nancy and her second husband James Morley had at least one child, Nancy L. Morley.
