I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandson of Jacob Smith and Mary Dugger.
Special thanks to Emma Barrett Reeves (deceased) for information shared by her via correspondence and by her book "Tennessee Smithology", 1975.
I dont know when Jacob Smith was born. In her book, Mrs. Reeves stated that an early DAR application (from 1916) showed that Jacob Smith was 26 years old when he married Mary Dugger in 1766, so "1740" was the logical birth date. However, I have found that Jacob Smith did not marry Mary Dugger until ca 1784-87, so that DAR application data seems very doubtful. Based on his marriage date, and other records, I'd guess that Jacob Smith was born no later than ca 1755, but possibly earlier than that, though "1740" seems a little too far back, but without records, it is hard to say. The first record I have for him is dated 1787, so if he was at least 21 then, he was born ca 1766 or earlier.
I dont know where Jacob Smith was born. That same DAR record (mentioned earlier) listed him born in England, and that he came to Maryland by 1766. I consider all of this information highly suspect, but worth noting.
Jacob Smith is a proven son of Edward Smith as named in Edward's 1807 Will. Edward was married three times, and I'm not sure which wife was Jacob's mother.
I have no early records on Jacob Smith before his arrival in what is now Carter County, Tennessee. Based on the birth dates and places on his close relatives, it can be presumed that Jacob was in Virginia prior to the early 1760's, then into North Carolina until the early 1780's when he moved into the Watauga River area of then Washington County, North Carolina (now Carter Co, TN).
Sometime between November 1784, and ca 1787, Jacob Smith married Mary Dugger, widow of Drury Goodwin. Mary was born 1750/60 (per 1830 census) probably in North Carolina somewhere. On the 1880 census, both of her surviving children (Ezekiel and Celia) listed their mother's birth place as Tennessee, but it seems very unlikely that Mary was born in what is now Tennessee in the 1750's for there were no whites in Tennessee at that time. Mary Dugger is believed to be a daughter of William Dugger Sr (sometimes mistakenly referred to as "Julius Caesar Dugger"). There are two sources proving her maiden name was Dugger. First, a 1784 court minute (see below) names her as such, and also the George family bible of her daughter Celia Smith lists her mother as "Mary Dugger".
Mary Dugger was probably born in Granville County, North Carolina (where William Dugger was living during part of the 1750's). By 1762, her parents had moved to Pittsylvania Co, VA, and by 1771 had moved into Surry County, North Carolina (now Wilkes and Ashe Counties). Wilkes County was formed in 1777 from western Surry. Mary probably married Drury Goodwin in Wilkes County ca 1779, or possibly afterwards in what is now Carter Co, TN. I have very little data on Drury Goodwin, except that he was dead by February 1783. Other researchers have told me he was married prior to Mary Dugger, but I've not seen any evidence of that yet (but haven't looked for it either).
In Washington County, North Carolina Court on 7 Feb 1783, Mary Goodin made a return (inventory) of the Estate of Drury Goodin, deceased. (Washington Co, NC Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Volume 1 1778-1779, pg 199)
On 3 Nov 1783, Mary Goodin administrator of Drury Goodin, deceased, brought a case against Philip Shelly. Whatever the case was about, Mary won, and was awarded 117 pounds. (Washington Co, NC Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Volume 1 1778-1779, pg 229)
On 1 Nov 1784 a Relinquishment was made from Isam Goodin to Mary Duggar, otherwise Mary Goodin, acknowledged in court. I've been told that Isam was Drury's father's name, though this might be a brother here instead. I don't know the meaning of this record, but it does prove that Mary Goodwin was formerly Mary Dugger. It also makes me think that perhaps Mary and Drury were not legally married, but were common law married (hence using both her maiden name and married name in the same record). (Washington Co, NC Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Volume 1 1778-1779, pg 259)
Other researchers have told me that Mary Dugger Goodwin's children (Nancy Goodwin-c1781 and Lawson Goodwin-c1784) were not Drury's, but were born out of wedlock, or during wedlock, but to another man. I have no idea where this information comes from, so I only mention it as a possibility. Lawson Goodwin's birth date (based only on census records) does make it look like he was born after his father's death, but not by too much. The 1784 court record referring to her both as Dugger and Goodwin makes me wonder if she and Drury were legally married or not.
As mentioned before, Mary married Jacob Smith between 1784 and 1787. I say 1787 because their first child was born 13 Feb 1788.
In Feb 1787 Court, Jacob Smith was mentioned in a road order referring to a road from the Dividing Ridge between Gap Creek and Doe River to the center of Watauga River near Jacob Smiths. Roan Creek was also mentioned. (Washington Co, NC Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Volume 1 1778-1779, pg 274)
In court on 6 Aug 1787, another road order mentioned Jacob Smith "... Waggon road to be cleared from Jacob Smith to Gap Creek by the house of Zachariah Campbell near Doe River". (Washington Co, NC Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Volume 1 1778-1779, pg 287)
In 1790, all of present Tennessee was ceded by North Carolina to the Federal Government and was organized as the "Territory South of the Ohio River".
The 1790 census is lost for this area. There is a surviving tax list fragment for Washington County in 1790, but Jacob Smith is not listed.
In 1796, Tennessee was admitted to the union as a State. That same year Carter County was formed from the part of Washington County where the Smiths resided.
Jacob Smith was listed on the 1796 Carter County tax list.
Jacob Smith was listed on the 1798 Carter County tax list.
The 1800 census in lost for Tennessee.
On 11 Feb 1807, Jacob's father Edward Smith made his Will in Carter County, Tennessee, naming (among others) his son Jacob Smith.
The 1810 census is lost for Tennessee.
The 1820 census is lost for Eastern Tennessee, including Carter County.
Jacob Smith made his Will on 7 Oct 1822 in Carter Co, TN, naming his wife Mary Smith, and sons Daniel Smith and Ezekiel Smith, and daughter Celia George ("Selah George"). He also named Mary's children: step-son Lawson Goodwin and step-daughter Nancy Vaught. I don't know when he died exactly, but it was before February 1823, for that is when it was proven in court.
In 1830, widow Mary Dugger Goodwin Smith was listed as head of household on the Carter County census. She was living alone, but her sons Daniel and Ezekiel Smith were nearby just two and three houses away.

I don't know the source for it, but I have Mary's death date as ca February 1836 in Carter Co, TN.
Jacob Smith and Mary Dugger had three children as proven by his Will, and Mary had two children by her previous marriage to Drury Goodwin, also named in Jacob Smith's Will.
According to other researchers, Nancy married Joseph Vaught. I don't have much data on this family so far. They apparently married before 1806 in Carter County.
They were probably in Carter County for the 1810 and 1820 census, though those records are lost.
They were listed on the 1830 census in Carter County, next door to John Vaught (their son, I think).

According to other researchers, Joseph Vaught died in 1830 (must have been after the census taker came around).
Nancy Goodwin Vaught was living in the section of Carter County that became Johnson County in 1836.
She was listed on the 1840 census in Johnson County.

I did not find Nancy on the 1860 census.
He was probably with his parents for the 1790 and 1800 census, though unfortunately, those records are lost for Carter Co, TN.
In "1804" (per 1850 census), Lawson Goodwin married Celia Dugger probably in nearby Wilkes Co, NC where her parents lived. She was his first cousin, a daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (---) Dugger.
They were probably in Carter County for the 1810 and 1820 census, though those records are lost.
They were listed on the 1830 census in Carter County, next door to Joel Dugger, Lawson's brother-in-law.

Lawson and Celia seemed to have many children per the 1830 and 1840 census records, but I have not yet found a record naming them.
Daniel was probably home with his parents for the 1790 and 1800 census, though those records are lost for Carter Co, TN.
Daniel Smith married Mary Simmerly in "1809" (per 1850 census) in Carter Co, TN. I've not seen any direct evidence that she was a Simmerly, but this data was found in the Smith book. Mary was born ca 1783/84 (per 1850 census), either in North Carolina (per 1850 census) or in Tennessee, per 1860 census. I don't know who her parents were.
They would probably have been listed on the 1810 and 1820 census in Carter County, though those records are lost.
Daniel was named in his father's Will in 1822.
Daniel was listed on the 1830 census in Carter Co, TN near various relatives.

Daniel and family were listed on the 1850 census in Carter County. For some reason, the census taker misunderstood one of the columns ("married within census year") and wrote in the year of marriage for each married or widowed person. This is a good mistake to make, for in many cases, marriage records can't be found, though the 1850 census gives a secondary source for at least the year someone was married, though like all census data, the reliability varies.

I have not yet checked the 1870 census.
Daniel Smith died 4 Jan 1872 (per tombstone) in Carter County. I don't know when Mary died.
I have a list of 8 children for Daniel and Mary, but no direct proof (except for 2 who were still home in 1850 and 1860).
Ezekiel was probably home with his parents for the 1790, 1800 and 1810 census, though those records are lost for Carter Co, TN.
Ezekiel Smith married Nancy Gordon Doran on 24 Feb 1814 (source?) in Carter Co, TN. Her name and marriage date were given in the Smith book, though I've not seen any direct evidence for either yet.
They would probably have been listed on the 1820 census in Carter County, though those records are lost.
Ezekiel was named in his father's Will in 1822.

In 1836, Johnson County was formed from a section of Carter County very close to where the Smiths lived. Ezekiel either already lived in that section, or he moved there in the 1830's, for he was listed there on the 1840 census.

Ezekiel Smith died on 4 Apr 1881 in Carter County.
I have a list of only 3 children for Ezekiel Smith, per the 1850 census. Earlier census records show a large family. According to family letters, Ezekiel married again (to Elizabeth ---), and had other children (after Nancy's death), but more research is needed on that.
Celia was probably home with her parents for the 1800 and 1810 census, though those census records are lost for Carter Co, TN.
Celia Smith married Charles Noden George on 8 Feb 1816 (per Pension record) in Carter Co, TN. They lived in Carter County until ca 1827-30 when they moved to Blount County where they remained until the mid 1840's when they moved to Monroe Co, TN until ca 1854 when they moved into neighboring Cherokee (now Graham) Co, NC where they remained until C. N.'s death in 1869. Afterwards, she lived with her son Jefferson George in Macon and Cherokee County until her death in 1885. See their own page for additional information.
