[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am not related to Mark Watson as far as I know, though it is possible (but unlikely) that he is related to my ancestor Joseph Watson (c1825) of Onslow Co, NC, some of who's descendants wound up in Marion Co, SC in later years. There is no known connection between my Watsons and Mark Watson though.
Mark Watson was born ca 1768/69 (per 1850 census). The 1850 census lists his birth place as "Marion" District, South Carolina. If true, he was born there long before Marion came to be, when the area was still part of Georgetown District. Other researchers tell me that Mark came from Wayne or Johnston County, North Carolina. This could be true, but I've not seen any proof of that yet.
I don't know who Mark's parents are. Other researchers show him to be a son of a Samuel Watson who died ca 1784 in Wayne Co, NC. I don't know if this is correct or not, but it is worth mentioning, pending evidence one way or the other. It is possible that Mark is a brother to Barnabas Watson (c1758) of Marion District, mainly in that they were about the same age, and that Barney named one of his sons "Mark". This doesn't prove they were brothers, but it is of interest.
Mark Watson married Mary --- prior to ca 1790. I don't know where they married, or what her maiden name was. She was born ca 1759/60 (per 1850 census).
Mark Watson was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, South Carolina, in Prince George Parish. This census was alphabetical, so I can't tell where he was living, nor who his neighbors were. There were several other Watsons in the area at that time. I don't know how they were all related to each other.

Marion District was formed in 1798 (effective 1800) from Georgetown District, and included the area where Mark Watson lived.
On 28 Dec 1799, Mark Watson sold 130 acres on Bell Swamp to Dugall Carmichael. He signed with a mark, and his wife was not mentioned in the deed. Witnesses were Peter McKinsey and Dougal Carmichael Jr. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book A, page 34)
Mark Watson was listed on the 1800 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed next to Samuel Edwards and Solomon Gale. None of the other Watsons were nearby.

On 13 Sep 1803, John Ford and wife Caty Ford sold 275 acres to Mark Watson of Marion District, for $200, being on North East side of Little PeeDee on Hays Swamp. Witnesses were Preserved Ford and Lewender Cameron. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book B, page 305)
The above land was located in what later became Carmichael Township in Dillon County, SC.
On 27 Nov 1803 Mark Watson sold Francis Hodges 2 tracts totaling 122 acres on South side of Beare Swamp. He signed with a mark, and no wife was mentioned. Witnesses were Preserved Ford and Clifford Brown. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book K, page 172, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997 * All other deeds referred to on this page in Books F through K are also from this book).
Mark Watson was listed as a voter on the 1809 Voter list in Marion District.
Mark Watson was listed on the 1810 census in Marion District. Once again, he was not near any other Watsons. His neighbors "next door" were John McQuaige and Angus McLellan. He was just a few houses from Edward Campbell and James Lane.

Mark was listed on the 1811 Marion Tax List and taxed 12 cents.
Mark Watson was listed on the 1814 Marion Tax list and taxed 50 cents.
On 1 Apr 1816 Mark Watson sold 118 acres to Elias Allen on Sandridge Bay and Balfas Branch. Mark signed with a mark, and no wife was mentioned. Witnesses were Shadrach Allen and Zabon Davis. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book G, page 146)
Mark Watson was listed on the 1820 census in Marion District. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were.

Mark Watson was listed on the 1824 Marion tax list and taxed 27 cents.
Mark Watson was listed on the 1830 census in Marion District. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were.

Mark Watson was listed on the 1840 census in Marion District. For some reason he was listed alone in his household. This could mean that the census taker didn't actually visit him, so just put down Mark's enumerations, and left out the rest, or that Mark was alone. If so, where was his wife Mary? Or is it possible that Mary was his second wife, and that his first wife had died in the 1830-1840 timeframe? Once again, Mark was not listed near any other Watsons. His neighbors on either side were Isham Daniel and Mary McInague.

Mark and Mary were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District. Either Mary was his second wife, married between 1840 and 1850, or she was just left off the 1840 census record for some reason. There was an Ann Watson (c1816) residing with them. One might assume she was their daughter, but she was not listed at home in 1820, 1830 or 1840, so perhaps she is a granddaughter, or perhaps a widowed daughter-in-law. In 1850, Mark and family were not listed near any other Watsons. They were next door to Isam McDaniel and wife Mary (Watson), Mark's daughter.

I did not find Mark, Mary or Ann on the 1860 census. I suspect both Mark and Mary died in the 1850's.
Probate records show that Mark Watson made his Will on 29 Jul 1845, and it was proven on 2 Jun 1856, so he had died by that latter date. In his Will he named his wife Mary Watson, daughters Letia Jackson, wife of Ervin Jackson, Mary McDonald (should say "McDaniel", wife of Isham McDonald (sic), and grandson John Jackson, son of Letia. He named his two sons-in-law as executors. Witnesses were Neil McCormick, James Campbell and Archibald D. McCormick. (Probate Roll # 1152 1/2, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume Two", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985).
The area in which this Watson family resided became Dillon County, South Carolina in 1910, and they apparently lived very close to the North Carolina line and Robeson Co, NC.
Mark Watson and Mary had two children as named in his Will of 1845 (Mary McDaniel and Malissa Jackson). Census records seem to show at least a couple more, who either died young, or were not their children at all, but just someone living with them. See the register report for what data I have on these children.
Malissa Watson was born ca 1794/95 (per 1860 census) or probably more likely born ca 1784/90 (per 1790, 1800 and 1810 census). I cant narrow her birth down too closely. Early census records shows her older than in later census (a common problem).
In 1790, she was apparently home with her parents, but no ages were given for females (born before 1790). In 1800 she was apparently home, aged 10-15 (born ca 1784/90), and still home in 1810 age 16-25 (born ca 1784/94).
Malissa married Ervin Jackson sometime before ca 1820. He was born ca 1789/90 in SC, presumably in what later became Dillon County, but for many years was Marion District/County.
I did not find them on the 1820 census.
They were listed in neighboring Robeson Co, NC for the 1830 census. They probably only lived a few miles from her parents, just over the line in Marion District, SC (now Dillon Co, SC). The Jacksons apparently lived in the Thompson Township section of Robeson County.

I did not find them in 1870 or 1880. Their children were still in Robeson and Marion those years, so I suspect Ervin and Malissa died in the 1860's.
Mary Watson was born ca 1799/1800 (per 1850 and 1860 census) in Marion Dist, SC (now Dillon Co, SC). She was apparently home with her parents for the 1800 census (age "under 10", born ca 1790/1800) and still home in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800).
Mary married Isham McDaniel before ca 1820. Isham's last name was rendered several different ways in the records, but primarily "McDaniel" or "Daniel" or sometimes "McDonald" and "McDonal". Isham was born ca 1795/96 in SC. I don't know who his parents were.
They were listed on the 1820 census in Marion District. Unfortunately this census is alphabetical, so I can't tell who their neighbors were. An older woman was with him, possibly Isham's mother?

Isham McDaniel died sometime before 1860. I didn't find a Probate or Equity record for him.
Mary and some of the children were listed on the 1860 census in Marion District. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
In 1870, Mary was living with her son Mark McDaniel in Carmichael Township. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
I did not find Mary on the 1880 census, so she may have died by then.
When Isham and Mary's son Neil McDaniel died in 1879, he left a probate record naming his surviving brothers and sisters and some nieces and nephews. This record proves the family of Isham and Mary fairly well. (Probate Roll # 1735, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume III", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985).
Unknown Son (1815/20). Mark Watson had an apparent son this age with him in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20), and with him still in 1830 (age 10-14, born ca 1815/20). He was gone by 1840, and was not named in Mark Watson's Will of 1845, so probably dead by then.
Anna Watson (c1816) was home with Mark and Mary in 1850, listed as "Anna" age 34. One would assume from the census that she was their daughter, however, evidence is strongly against it. She was not named in Mark's 1845 Will, nor was any female her age with the Mark Watson family in the 1820, 1840 or 1840 census. I can't help but note that her age is an exact match for the unknown son of Mark Watson who was with him those years. However, I don't know who Anna is. She may be a granddaughter, or a niece, or a census mistake (as in her last name was not Watson, but she was living with the Watsons as a house keeper or something).
