I (Marty Grant) am not related to Barnabas Watson as far as I know, though it is possible (but unlikely) that he is related to my Watson ancestors of Onslow Co, NC, some of whom wound up in Marion Co, SC in later years. There is no known connection between my Watsons and Barnabas Watson though.
Barnabas Watson (also known as "Barney") was born ca 1760/65 (per census analysis) or "1758" per his tombstone, which was placed many years after his death, so may not be accurate.
I'm not sure where Barnabas was born, for he died before the 1850 census (which would have listed his place of birth). However, two of his children reported on the 1880 census that their father and mother had been born in South Carolina. If so, he was probably born in old Georgetown District, SC, now Marion County. Other researchers have placed this families origin in Johnston and Wayne Co, NC, so if that is true, then Barnabas was probably born in North Carolina instead, though I've not seen any supporting evidence for that.
I don't know who Barnabas's parents were, though other researchers have said he was a son of a Samuel Watson who died ca 1784 in Wayne Co, NC. Sellers stated that Barnabas had two brothers named Needham Watson (bef 1765) and Thomas Watson. Sellers did not mention who their parents were though. I would guess that Barnabas was probably a brother to Mark Watson (c1768) since Barnabas named one of his sons "Mark". This isn't conclusive proof of course, but it is worth noting.
Whether he was born in the Marion area or not, Barnabas was there by 1786, for he was listed on the 1786 tax list in Georgetown District, Prince George Parish in Captain Haraldson's Company. He was taxed for 150 acres and one slave.
Sometime around 1786 (give or take a few years), Barnabas Watson married Elizabeth Smith, daughter of John Smith (who died in 1802). Elizabeth was born ca 1755/65 (per census analysis), though I don't know where she was born. Certain evidence seems to show that Elizabeth had been previously married to John Deer who died sometime before 1786, leaving her with two sons John Deer and James Deer. The evidence I've seen isn't too clear about whether John Deer was married to Elizabeth or to one of John Smith's other daughters, so I'm not sure of this.
Barnabas Watson was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District, South Carolina, in Prince George Parish. This census was alphabetical, so I can't tell where he was living, nor who his neighbors were. There were several other Watsons in the area at that time. I don't know how they were all related to each other. Barnabas had several apparent children with him. I'd bet some of them were Elizabeth's children from her first marriage.

On 10 Jun 1797, John Smith Sr made his Will and named his wife Mary and several children including daughter "Elizabeth Watson", and left her 300 acres "which I bought of Collins" where Kelly now lives, and 150 acres purchased from W. Sturdivant lying "on the bay" adjoining Frederick Jones. Barnabas Watson is not mentioned in the Will nor the probate records for John Smith, but based on other evidence it seems likely that he was the husband of Elizabeth Smith. (Probate Roll # 721, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume Two", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985).
Marion District was formed in 1798 (effective 1800) from Georgetown District, and included the area where Barnabas Watson lived.
Barnabas Watson was listed on the 1800 census in Marion District, SC. He was listed next to William Turbeville and John Mace. None of the other Watsons were nearby.

On 25 Feb 1801, Barnaby Watson, Willis Finklea and Hardy Crawford witnessed a deed from Willis Finklea Jr and John Finklea to Thomas T. Wickham. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book B, page 118, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996 * All other deeds referred to on this page in Books A through E are also from this book).
On 6 Mar 1807, John Deer of Marion sold 600 acres to Barnabas Watson (who I believe was John's step father, though only slightly older than Deer). The land was described as being part of several tracts on south west side of Buck Swamp. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book E, page 157).
Barnabas Watson was listed as a voter on the 1809 Voter list in Marion District.
Barnabas Watson was listed on the 1810 census in Marion District. Once again, he was not near any other Watsons. His neighbors "next door" were William Cox and Judith Cox. He was just two houses from my ancestor Jonah Collins (1774).

Barnabas was listed on the 1811 Marion Tax List and taxed 19 cents.
On 18 Jul 1811, Barnabas Watson sold 250 acres to Isham Watson (his son), on the west side of Catfish Swamp. Barnabas signed with a mark. His wife was not mentioned in the deed. Witnesses were James Deer and Samuel Deer (both step-sons of his). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F, page 205, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997 * All other deeds referred to on this page in Books F through K are also from this book).
Barnabas Watson was listed on the 1814 Marion Tax list and taxed 84 cents.
On 8 Jan 1814, Barnaba Watson and Mathew Watson (don't know who he is) witnessed a deed from John Sanders and wife Elizabeth to Isham Watson (Barnabas's son). (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F, page 206).
On 14 Nov 1816, Barnaby Watson sold 50 acres to Arthur Herring on Southwest side of Buck Swamp. Witnesses were Thomas Moody and Mary Taylor. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book H, page 64).
On 27 Sep 1817 B. Watson and E. Price, JP witnessed a deed from Scasebook Watson to Joseph Hays. If "B. Watson" is Barnabas, then that suggests a relationship between these two families, however, I think "B." Watson is probably Scace Book Jr, based on another similar deed where Scace Book signed as "B. Watson". (Marion Co, SC Deed Book G, page 33).
Barnabas Watson was listed on the 1820 census in Marion District. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were.

Sometime between ca 1820 and ca 1823, Elizabeth Smith Watson died, and Barnabas married Mary Rogers. Mary was born ca 1793/94. I don't know what the proof of her maiden name is. I've not yet seen any primary evidence proving she was a Rogers, nor who her parents might have been. Barnabas Jr, son of this Barnabas did marry a Miss Rogers, so I wonder if someone got confused, and though it was Barnabas Sr who married a Rogers? Or perhaps both Sr and Jr married Rogers.
Barnabas Watson was listed on the 1824 Marion tax list and taxed $1.19.
In an Equity record from ca 1824 (20 Apr 182-), Barnabas Watson was named among the heirs of John Smith, though a specific relationship was not stated. In the case, James Ervin vs. Enos Tart and others, a large list of heirs of John Smith, deceased, were named. The names matched those given in John's 1797 Will, except two daughters mentioned in the Will (Elizabeth Watson and Martha Finklea) who were apparently dead by then. Several children (all seemingly grandkids of John Smith) were named, including several Finkleas and Watsons. Presumably all the Watsons were children or connections to Elizabeth Smith Watson. Those named in this record are (starting with the Watsons): Barnabas Watson, John Deer, James Deer, Samuel Deer, Isom Watson (Isom was listed in the "errata" section, so I don't know what order he was included in list), Needham Watson, Greenwood Watson, Green Watson, Lany Watson and Mary Johnson. (Other heirs were named prior to the Watsons, but they are not applicable here). No exact relationships were mentioned, but here is my interpretation. First of all, Elizabeth Smith Watson was dead, so she was not mentioned. Her widowed husband Barnabas Watson was named first, then her children, first naming her three Deer kids from her first marriage to John Deer (John, James and Samuel Deer), then naming her Watson children: Isom, Needham, Greenwood, Green and Lany Watson. Mary Johnson may also be a daughter, or she might be related to John Smith in some other way. The problem with this list is that although Isom Watson is a proven son of Barnabas Watson (per his 1841 Probate records), the others are not mentioned in his probate record. That could mean that they were all dead by then (possible) or were left out for some reason (which is also possible). I'm not sure how to reconcile this record with the other records I have found. One reasonable explanation could be that Elizabeth Smith Watson also had a daughter (name unknown) by first husband John Deer and that she had married Needham Watson (bef 1765), and died before 1824, leaving Needham with children named Green, Greenwood, Green and Lany Watson and Mary Johnson. That would explain this record quite nicely. (Equity Roll # 235, "Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls", by Lucille Utley)
Barnabas Watson was listed on the 1830 census in Marion District. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were.

Barnabas Watson died in 1841 in Marion Dist, SC. His son Isham Watson became Administrator of his Estate. The probate record named widow Mary, and eight children: Martha Dorman, Susannah Watson, Milly Watson, Meridy Watson, Mary Watson, Mark Watson, Barnabas Watson and Isham Watson. Those others named in the 1824 record (Needham, Greenwood, Green and Lany Watson and Mary Johnson) were not mentioned in this record, so perhaps they all had died without heirs, or were not Barnabas's children to begin with. (Probate Roll # 835, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume Two", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985).
Mary and children were listed on the 1850 census in Marion District.

I did not find Mary in 1880, so she may have died in the 1870-1880 time period.
Barnabas Watson and Elizabeth Smith had several children per the 1790 through 1820 census records, and Barnabas and wife Mary Rogers had at least 6 kids. They seem to have had 8 children, but the two youngest (Abram and Beady) were probably grandkids, as they were not named in his 1841 probate record. There is also the case of the 1824 Equity record for John Smith (died 1802) naming heirs including Barnabas Watson, Needham, Isham, Green, Greenwood and Lany Watson and Mary Johnson. Of these, we know from other sources that Isham was Barnabas's son, so who were the others? They were not named in his 1841 Probate record. Barnabas had a much younger daughter named Mary, so "Mary Johnson" probably isn't his child. I now believe those other Watsons named in 1824 were actually children of Needham Watson (Barnabas's brother) who had married a Miss Deer, Barnabas's step-daughter.
Unknown Son (1774/90). Barnabas Watson had an apparent son this age with him in 1790 (aged "under 16", born ca 1774/90), but he was gone by 1800, so probably married or dead by then.
This could be one of Elizabeth's children by her first husband John Deer. They had three sons John (1770/74), James (1780/90) and Samuel Deer.

This could be one of Elizabeth's children by her first husband John Deer. They had three sons John (1770/74), James (1780/90) and Samuel Deer.
Isham Watson was born "1787" (per tombstone) in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Marion Co, SC). He is a proven child of Barnabas, as named in the 1841 Probate record.
Isham Watson married Mary Hayes in 1810 in Marion Dist, SC. See their page for additional information.
Unknown Daughter (bef 1790). Barnabas Watson had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1790 (no ages, born bef 1790). She was gone by 1800, so probably married or dead by then. This could be "Lany Watson" who was named in the 1824 list of heirs of John Smith. If so, I have no other data on her.
Unknown Daughter (1784/90). Barnabas Watson had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1790 (no ages, born before 1790), and still home in 1800 (age 10-15, born ca 1784/90), but gone by 1810 so probably married by then.
This has to be the same person as Martha Watson listed below, even though her 1850 census entry shows her as "50", or born ca 1799/1800. This is probably wrong, and she is older than that. See Martha's entry below for more information.
Martha Watson was born ca 1799/1800 (per 1850 census), or probably more likely born ca 1784/90 (see unknown daughter listed above). In 1860 she was listed as 65, or born ca 1795, which is probably closer to accurate than the 1850 age.
Martha is a proven child of Barnabas, as named in the 1841 Probate record. She was not listed in the 1824 list of heirs of John Smith (her grandfather). According to the 1841 estate record, she had married a Mr. Dorman. I'm not sure of her husband's given name. I've found a John Dorman and a Benjamin Dorman in early Marion County records. I think Benjamin was her husband, but I'm not totally sure of that.
The 1810 census for Marion District only shows one Dorman: John Dorman (1765/84) with an apparent wife in the same age group, which does not fit Martha. His household was quite large indicating he had many children at that point. It is this reason that I don't believe he was married to Martha Watson, but she could be his second wife.
In 1820, John Dorman was again the only one of that name in Marion District. He was listed as age 45+ or born before 1775. His apparent wife was aged 26-44 or born ca 1775/94 which is a better fit for Martha.
In 1830 only Benjamin Dorman (1800/10) was listed in Marion District. His wife was the same age as himself.
In 1840, Martha Dorman was listed as head of household, so apparently widowed by then. She was listed in between Wickham Watson and Kinion Watson, relationship unknown, and just a few houses from her father. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
In 1850, she was listed in Marion. She was listed as 50, with a Barney, age 30 and Dennis age 18 living with her, presumably her sons. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
In 1860, I found a "Pett Dorman" age 65 living with Basheba Campbell (widow of Hugh Campbell). She was listed as a midwife. "Pett" may be "Patt" as in "Patsy" which is a common nickname for "Martha", so I'm fairly sure this is Martha Watson Dorman. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.
I did not find Martha on the 1870 census.
Unknown Son (1800/10). Barnabas Watson had an apparent son this age with him in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). He was not home in 1820 unless he was still listed "Under 10", or born ca 1810/20. This could work if he was born ca 1810. He was not home in 1830.
I don't know who this was. He was not named in Barnabas's 1841 Probate record, so he was probably dead before then.
Unknown Son (1810/20). Barnabas Watson had an apparent son this age with him in 1820 (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20). He was not home in 1830.
I don't know who this was. He was not named in Barnabas's 1841 Probate record, so he was probably dead before then.
Susannah Watson was born ca 1822/23 (per 1850 census) in Marion Dist, SC. She is a proven child of Barnabas as named in his 1841 Probate records. She was apparently home in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and still home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25), and still home in 1850 ("Susan" age 27), and in 1860 ("Susan" age 38), and in 1870 ("Susan" age 49).
I did not find her in 1880.
Millie A. Watson was born ca 1823/24 (per 1860 census) in Marion Dist, SC. She is a proven child of Barnabas as named in his 1841 Probate records. She was apparently home in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and still home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25), and still home in 1850 ("Millie" age 25), and in 1860 ("A" age 36). I didn't find her in 1870, so probably married or dead by then.
Meredith Watson was born 2 Aug 1824 (per tombstone, but I think the year is off, probably ca 1826 would be more accurate) in Marion Dist, SC. He is a proven child of Barnabas as named in his 1841 Probate records.
Meredith married Elizabeth Caroline Edwards, and second: Nancy Margaret Lane. See their own page for additional information.
Mary Watson was born ca 1828/29 (per 1850 census) in Marion Dist, SC. She is a proven child of Barnabas as named in his 1841 Probate records. She was apparently home in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1850 ("Mary" age 21), and in 1860 ("Mary" age 32), and still home in 1870 ("Mary" age 43).
I didn't find her in 1880, so probably married or dead by then.
Mark Watson was born ca 1830/31 (per 1850 census) in Marion Dist, SC. He is a proven child of Barnabas as named in his 1841 Probate records. He was apparently home in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1850 ("Mark" age 19), and in 1860 ("Mark" age 27). I did not find him in 1870.
Barnabas Watson was born ca 1835/36 (per 1850 census) in Marion Dist, SC. He is a proven child of Barnabas as named in his 1841 Probate records. He was apparently home in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1850 ("Barney" age 14).
Barnabas married Sarah Ann Rogers before ca 1859. She was a daughter of Nathan Rogers and Chloe Perritt (d/o David Perritt).
They were listed on the 1860 census just a couple of houses from his widowed mother. "N. Watson", age 55, female, was living with them. I don't know who she was.

Barnabas died on 26 Mar 1898, and Sarah on 7 Mar 1918. They are buried at the Watson Cemetery in Marion County.
Beady Watson was born ca 1836/37 (per 1850 census). She may be a grandchild instead of a child, for she was not named in the 1841 Probate records for Barnabas Watson. She was apparently home in 1840 (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and home in 1850 ("Beady" age 13), and home in 1860 ("B." age 22). She was not found in 1870, so probably married or dead by then.
Abram Watson was born ca 1840/41 (per 1850 census). He may be a grandchild instead of a child, for he was not named in the 1841 Probate records for Barnabas Watson. He was home in 1850 ("Abram" age 9), and not found in 1860, so probably dead by then.
