Revision History:

29 Oct 2008 - Created by Marty Grant.

Stephen Watson was born ca 1811/12 per his age on the 1850 census (38). In 1860 he was 45 (born ca 1814/15). I dont know which is the most accurate. Stephen was born in Brunswick Co., NC a son of William Watson and Rebecca (---) as proven by Williams 1845 Will.

Stephen seems to be with his parents for the 1820 census aged under 10 (1810/20). He is apparently still home in 1830 aged 15-19 (1810/15), and still home in 1840 aged 20-29 (1810/20).

On 26 Oct 1840 Stephen Watson received a state land grant for 100 acres on the northwest side of Brunswick Bay adjoining B. L. Watson (his brother Benjamin L. Watson). (Brunswick Co., NC Deed Book M page 365 & 367)

There is no bay named Brunswick on the modern maps, so I dont know where the above land was exactly, but it is clear it was in or near the present town of Shallotte.

On 22 Dec 1845 Stephen Watson obtained a marriage bond in Brunswick to marry Eliza Bennett. Daniel McCollum and Stephen Mints (Mintz) were the bondsmen.

Anna Eliza Bennett was born ca 1827/28 (per age on 1850 census). She was listed as Anna on the 1850 census and Im making the assumption that Anna and Eliza are the same person for Ann Eliza or Anna Eliza was a very common name in the area at the time. I dont know who her parents were. It is also possible that wife Anna is a second wife and not the same person as Eliza Bennett who he married in 1845, but I think they are one and the same.

They are listed on the 1850 census in Brunswick County in Shallotte district. This wasnt near the other Watsons or the section where Stephen grew up.

In 1851 (no exact date given) Stephen Watson sold his 100 acres of land (granted in 1840) to Thomas Armstrong of New Hanover County. James H. Allen witnessed. (Brunswick Co., NC Deed Book T page 744).

Stephen was on the 1860 census in Brunswick, still in Shallotte district. He was living alone so his wife must have died in the 1850s. It is interesting that there is an Ann Eliza Watson, 23 (c1837) listed in Brunswick this year also, and living with a Benton family. She isnt Stephens wife, but it is an interesting coincidence.
