William Watson was born ca 1770/75 per
census analysis. I dont know where he was
born, though possibly somewhere in eastern
North Carolina. I dont know who his parents
were. It is possible that he is the same person as William J. Watson who is listed on the 1790 census in neighboring Bladen Co., NC. There were no Watsons listed on the 1790 census in Brunswick County. On 2 Aug 1795 William Watson sold Arthur Wingate a Negro girl named Elcey. The deed was witnessed by Meredith Watson and John Wanear. (Brunswick Co., NC Deed Book D page 50). The above deed is probably for William J. Watson instead of this William, but it is hard to tell. He was the only Watson in Brunswick for the 1800 census. The two older females in his house could be his mother and a sister or aunt. No way to be certain. This census entry has a certain symmetry with the 1790 entry for William J. (1790/1800) On 18 Dec 1800 William Watson received a state land grant for 100 acres on a branch of Lewis Swamp known as Teraping Hole (Terrapin Hole). (Brunswick Co., NC Deed Book A page 151). As best as I can tell the above land was somewhere in the Rabontown area between Town Creek Road and Green Hill Road or that general vicinity. William Watson married Rebecca (---) before ca 1805, presumably in Brunswick Co., NC. She was born ca 1784/90 per census analysis. I dont know her maiden name. She might be his second wife for his 1800 census entry shows two women with him, both aged 26-44 (born ca 1755/74). William was listed on the 1810 census in Brunswick. N. Watson (female, bef 1765) is a few households away. I cant find my copy of this Will, but I believe he named his wife Rebecca and sons William, Benjamin, Thomas and Stephen. Can anyone provide a copy or transcript or abstract of this Will since mine seems lost? Rebecca (---) Watson appears to have died between 1845 and 1850 since I couldnt find her on the 1850 census. There is an R. Watson age 74 (ca 1775/76) in neighboring New Hanover County in 1850. This could be Rebecca. She was residing with the William Mathis family. He was 45 and his wife R. was 44. Is R. Watson (c1776) of 1850 New Hanover the same person as Rebecca? I think it is quite possible if not probable. However since the census taker only used initials it is hard to be 100% certain. If it is her, then R. Mathis (c1806) wife of William may be her daughter. William Watson and wife Rebecca did have two unknown daughters born ca 1800/10. More research may determine if R. Watson and Rebecca are on and the same. |

Unknown Daughter (1800/10). William Watson had an apparent daughter this age. She was with him in 1810 aged under 10 (1800/10), but gone by 1820. This could be Rachel (c1806) wife of William Mathis of the 1850 census (New Hanover) who had an apparent widow R. Watson, 74 (c1776) living with them then. There is a William Matthews (a name often interchangeable with Mathis) in New Hanover in 1820 aged 26-44 (1775/94). That is a tad too old to be the same man. His wife in 1820 was the same age (1775/94) or in the next group born ca 1794/1804. There was a William Mathis in 1830 New Hanover, he was 30-39 (1790/1800) and his wife was 20-29 (1800/10). This appears to be the same ones from 1850. They were near several Clark families, and it should be noted that John R. Watson (c1815) married a Clark in New Hanover in the 1830s. They are in New Hanover in 1840, Long Creek District, he is 40-49 (1790/1800), and she is 30-39 (1800/10) which fits. As noted above they are in New Hanover in 1850. They are just a couple of houses from John Watson (c1803) who was born in Sweden. Is he related to R. Watson or is it just a coincidence? William Mathis 45 Cooper; R. 44 (female); Jas 23; John 18; D. W. 10 (male); N. M. 8 (female), R. F. 5 female; R. Watson 74 female. They were in Wilmington in 1860, minus William who had apparently died: Rachael Mathews, 53, Boarding house NC; David 19Machinist; Chas Parker 26 Machinist; R. Francinia, 15 (female), M. Vallingdingham 24 laborer MD; Jas Thompson 26 Machinist NC; L. Herring 19 Saddler NC; J. Hoyle 60 Tailor, Scotland; J. Miller 22 Tinner MD; E. Walton 40 (female), Seamstress NC; Virginia 9. I found her in 1870 (I think) in Wilmington: Rachel Mathews, 66, seamstress NC; Frances Vallandghan, 23 seamstress. (Manly Vanlandenham married Francenia Mathis in New Hanover on 21 Dec 1859). Rachel seems to have died in the 1870s. I found her daughter Francenia Vanlandenham, 34 as a boarder with M? Johnson (female) widow, age 63 in Wilmington. I dont know for sure that Rachel, wife of Mr. Mathis is a Watson, or a child of William and Rebecca, but it is worth checking into further. |

1840. This is probably Rebecca C. Watson (1814) who married Stephen Mintz. The Death Certificate of her son Stephen J. Mintz (d 1933 Brunswick) shows his mother Rebecca to be a Watson. This is the only proof Ive seen she was a Watson, so this is somewhat iffy since Death Certificates are often inaccurate regarding such things. Rebecca married Stephen Mintz before ca 1838 in Brunswick. |

Thomas Watson was
born ca 1804/10. He didnt seem to be with his
parents in 1810, so perhaps born that very
year. He was apparently home with his parents
in 1820 age 10-15 (1804/10) and still home in
1830 aged 20-29 (1800/10). He married someone (name unknown) in the 1830s. They are listed in Brunswick on the 1840 census. His father William and brother Benjamin are nearby. There were Thomas Watsons of similar age in other places, but I have no way to know which of them, if any, is same person. One good match is a Thomas of Pulaski Co., GA in 1850: Thos Watson 45, Charity 48; Thos Jr. 19; Wm 17; Benj 14; and Daniel 5. All born in NC. They fit age-wise, birth place-wise, and the names William and Benjamin are used in the Brunswick family. More research is needed to see if Thomas Watson of Pulaski Co., GA is the same person from Brunswick Co., NC. |

This is almost certain Elizabeth Watson (c1825). On 22 Dec 1845 Daniel W. Collum obtained a marriage bond in Brunswick to marry Elizabeth Watson. Stephen Mintz and Stephen Watson were the bondsman. Stephen Mintz was married to Rebecca Watson, and Stephen Watson was a son of William. Daniel and Elizabeth are on the 1850 census in Brunswick in the North West District: Daniel W. Collum 27, Labourer, NC; Elizabeth 25; Rebecca 3; Sarah 1. They are on the 1860 census in Brunswick in Town Creek District: D. W. Collum 36, Coooper; Elizabeth 35; Rebecca J. 12; Sarah E. 10; John C. 6; Daniel A. 4; Jesse J. 2. They are still in Town Creek for the 1870 census: Danl W.
