I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the Alfred Collins family. He may be related to my ancestor Jonah Collins (c1774).
Alfred Collins was born ca 1829/30 in Marion Dist, SC (per 1850 census). If he is a son of Moses Collins, as I suspect, then he was probably actually born in Darlington District.
I think that he is a son of Moses Collins (c1800), whom he lived next door to in 1850. Moses two other known children also had "A" names (Alexander and Alison), so that indicates a naming pattern, so "Alfred" fits perfectly. Also, Moses did have an apparent son Alfred's age per the 1830 and 1840 census. However, this isn't enough for me to be totally sure Moses is his father.
Alfred would have been about 1 year old or less for the 1830 census, assuming he was already born when the census taker came around. Moses Collins was in neighboring Darlington District and he had one apparent son age "under 5", (born ca 1825/30). I believe this was Alfred. However, there were several Collins in Marion District also with apparent sons that age, however, most are already identified. John J. Collins (c1790) had two sons that age, but I don't really suspect him to be Alfred's father, though it is possible. William S. Collins (c1792) had an apparent son that age. (Also, William was just a couple of houses from Alfred in 1850). I don't think Alfred is William's son though, for he was not mentioned in any of the Equity records concerning William's family.
For the 1840 census, Alfred would have been about 10 years old. There are several Collins households in 1840 Marion District with sons about his age, but most are already identified, except: Stephen D. Collins (c1805) who had two boys 10-14 (born ca 1825/30). Moses Collins (c1800) had three boys 10-14. William S. Collins (c1792) had one son 10-14.
Alfred Collins married Ann --- ca 1840/50, probably close to 1850, as they had no children yet in 1850. I don't know her maiden name.
Alfred Collins and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion County in very close proximity to several Collins families, including Moses Collins (c1800) (his probable father), and Richard Collins (c1820) who were next door to him, and they were all just a few houses from William S. Collins (1792).

Alfred was not found in 1860 in Marion (or neighboring counties). Moses Collins and children were also missing, so I suspect they all moved off somewhere together.
Alfred and Ann had no children by the time of the 1850 census. They probably had some after that.
