I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Moses Collins. He may be somehow related to my ancestor Jonah Collins (c1774).

Moses Collins was born ca 1799/1800 (per 1850 census) in Marion Dist, SC or possibly in Darlington District. His 1850 census entry in Marion lists his birth place as "Marion", but that doesn't mean the census taker was correct.

I don't know who Moses' parents were. I also don't know if he was raised in Marion or Darlington. The first record I found for him was his entry on the 1830 census in Darlington, then to Marion for the 1840 and 1850 census. The clues leading to the identity of his parents could be in either county.

For the 1800 census (assuming he was born when the census taker came around), Moses would have been less than one year old, so he should be enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1790/1800). There was an apparent widow Sarah Collins in Darlington that year, but she had no apparent sons that age. In Marion, there was Dempsey Collins, Jonathan Collins and Thomas Collins, each of whom had one or more sons that age. Thomas and Jonathan have well documented families, so they are not Moses's father, but Dempsey sure could be.

For the 1810 census, Moses would have been about 10 years old, so he could be enumerated in either the "under 10" age group (born ca 1800/10) or in the 10-15 group (born ca 1794/1800). In Darlington, there was a Joseph Collins listed, and he had no sons that age. In Marion there were a couple of Collins with apparent sons that match Moses's age. Dempsey Collins had 2 sons under 10; Shadrack Collins had one son under 10; David Collins had one son 10-15.

For the 1820 census, Moses would have been about 20 years old, so should be listed in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1794/1804). In Darlington District, there is a Robert Collins and he had someone with him in that age group. None of the Marion District Collins's had an apparent son that age. This makes Robert look like a prime suspect to be Moses's father.

Moses Collins married Susan --- before 1830 in Darlington Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name.

They were listed on the 1830 census in Darlington District, in fact, the only Collins family there that year. Moses had lots of "extra" people with him, perhaps younger siblings. An older woman was also there, perhaps his mother or his wife's mother.

By 1840, they had moved into neighboring Marion District, South Carolina and were listed on the 1840 census there, though not in proximity of any other Collins families. The "extra" folks with him in 1830 were no longer with him in 1840. There were several Collins listed in 1840 in Darlington, perhaps they are the ones who were with him in 1830.

Moses Collins and family were listed on the 1850 census in Marion County in very close proximity to several Collins families, including Alfred Collins, and Richard Collins who were next door to him, and they were all just a few houses from William Collins (1792). This would make me believe that Moses was related to some of the Marion County Collins.

I did not find them on the 1860 census. I checked the 1860 census index and found a few Moses Collins's here and there, but I don't know if any are the same man. There were none in South Carolina in 1860.

Children

Moses and Susan had a few children per the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census. I have no additional data on any of these children yet.

Unknown Son (1825/30)

Unknown Daughter (1825/30)

Unknown Son (1825/30)

Unknown Son (1825/30)

Alexander Collins (c1833)

Allison Collins (c1834)

Unknown Son (1825/30). Moses Collins had an apparent son this age. He was home with him in 1830 (age "under 5"), and still home in 1840 (age 10-14), but gone by 1850.

There was an Alfred Collins (c1830) next door to Moses in 1850, and it seems very likely that he is Moses's son. Besides being his neighbor in 1850, and being the right age, he also has an "A" name, as does Moses's two other known children (Alexander and Allison) which would indicate a consistent naming pattern.

Unknown Daughter (1825/30). Moses Collins had an apparent daughter this age. She was home with him in 1830 (age "under 5"), and still home in 1840 (age 10-14), but gone by 1850.

Unknown Son (1825/30). Moses Collins had an apparent son this age. He was not home with him in 1830, but was home in 1840 (age 10-14), but gone by 1850. His apparent absence in 1830 may indicate this was not a son of Moses, but a nephew, or other boarder.

Alexander Collins was born ca 1832/33 (per 1850 census) in Marion District (per 1850 census), or possibly in Darlington District. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), and still home in 1850 ("Alexander" age 17).

Allison Collins was born ca 1833/34 (per 1850 census) in Marion District (per 1850 census), or possibly in Darlington District. He did not seem to be home with his parents for the 1840 census, but was home in 1850 ("Alison" age 16).
