Avorett Floyd (c1819) and Aura L. --- of Horry Co, SC

I (Marty Grant) don't know how I'm related to Avorett Floyd, though I'm sure he is somehow related to my ancestor Pugh Floyd (c1791).

Avorett Floyd was born ca 1818/19 (per 1860 census) in SC, presumably in Horry District.

I don't know who Avorett's parents were. There are numerous suspects. Their may be some evidence regarding his parentage somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet.

Assuming that he was born in what is now Horry, then he was probably with his parents for the early census records (1820, 1830 and 1840). Unfortunately the names of family members were not given on those census records, so census analysis helps, but doesn't prove anything for sure.

For the 1820 census, Avorett would have been about 1 year old, so he should be enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). There were far too many Floyd household with an apparent son this age in 1820 so it does not help to narrow down possible parents for Avorett.

For the 1830 census, Avorett would have been about 11 years old, so he should be enumerated in the 10-14 age group (born ca 1815/20). Several Floyd households had at least one apparent son that age:. Hugh Floyd (c1780), James Floyd (1790/1800). Frederick Floyd (1780/90), and Lewis Floyd (c1789). One of these is probably Avorett's parents.

For the 1840 census, Avorett would have been about 21 years old, so he should be enumerated in the 20-29 age group (born ca 1810/20). Pugh Floyd (c1791) had one son that age, but Avoritt is not his son. None of the other Horry Floyds had an apparent son this age with them in 1840. Avorett could have been living anywhere.

Avorett Floyd married Aura L. --- sometime prior to 1850 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name. She was born ca 1821/22, presumably in Horry District. The 1850 census listing gives North Carolina as her birth place, though as I'll discuss below, I don't know if that entry is for this same family or not.

I believe I found them on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC. I'm not sure it is them, because they are listed by initials only, and they are not an exact match, but it seems like the same family. Keep in mind that this 1850 listing might be for totally different people instead. They were not listed near any other Floyd families. I think they were in what later became Gallivants Ferry Township.

My reasoning for thinking this is the same family, is that "E. H." Floyd, could easily be "Avorett", considering this name is often rendered "Everett", and that "R. L. L." Floyd could easily be Avorett's wife Aura L. Floyd. The names of 1860 and initials from 1850 have a certain correlation.

Avorett and family were listed on the 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC. They were near several other Floyd families, apparently in the area that later became Floyds Township. They were next to William P. Floyd (c1829) son of James Floyd (1800).

I did not find Avorett, nor Aura, nor any of their children in 1870. I don't know if they all moved away, or all died.

Avorett and Aura had 4 children by 1860. I have no additional data on any of them.
