Woodard and others for data shared on this family. Pugh Floyd was born ca 1790/91 in SC, presumably in that part of old Georgetown District that later became Horry County. He may have been named after an ancestor who bore the "Pugh" surname, though I don't have any proof of that, but it seems a likely reason for his name. Pugh Floyd is a proven child of James Floyd (bef 1755) and Elizabeth Lewis. This connection is proven by Pugh (and others) being named as heirs in James' estate records. Assuming that he was born in what is now Horry, then he was probably with his parents for the early census records (1800 and 1810). Unfortunately the names of family members were not given on those census records so I can only try to match them up by age group. For the 1800 census, Pugh would have been about 9 years old, and therefore enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1790/1800), and sure enough, his father James had 4 sons that age with him in 1800. For the 1810 census, Pugh would have been about 19 years old, and therefore should be enumerated in the 16-25 age group (born ca 1784/94), and sure enough, his father James had 2 sons that age with him in 1810. Pugh Floyd served during the War of 1812 in James Johnston's Company and Theophilus Floyd's Company. His pension files contain some interesting family data (Files WC-24912 and SC-19998 available from the National Archives). Pugh Floyd married his first wife Charity Pitman sometime between 1800 and 1814 in Horry Dist, SC. Her name is proven by the War of 1812 Pension records. I don't know who Charity's parents were, nor when she was born. She could be closely related to Sarah Pitman who married Pugh’s brother Frederick Floyd. I'm not sure when Charity died, but it was probably between 1817 and 1819. It is possible that she died during, or shortly after the birth of Sarah Jane Floyd, born 26 Sep 1817. This is just conjecture though. Pugh Floyd married Jane Graham before 1819 in Horry Dist, SC. Her maiden name is proven by the War of 1812 Pension records. Jane was born ca 1794/95 in SC, presumably in that part of old Georgetown that later became Horry County. I don't know who her parents were, but there were only five Graham households in the area on the 1800 census that had an apparent daughter her age (James Graham, John Sr, John Jr, William and Joseph). One of them could be her family. More research is needed on that subject. I don't know how she is related to Pugh or to Jane. Pugh Floyd married again (a third time) to a widow, Sarah Hewett Page (name proven by War of 1812 pension records). They were married on 30 Jan 1870 in Columbus Co, NC (proven by Pension record). Sarah was born ca 1827/28 in Columbus Co, NC. I found her and her first husband Bennett Page on the 1850 census in Brunswick Co, NC. She was a child of William H. Hewett and Elizabeth, who were also listed on the 1850 census in Brunswick Co, NC in Shallotte District. (Thanks to Bill Page for giving the name of Sarah's first husband). Pugh and Sarah were listed on the 1870 census in Horry County, in Gallivants Ferry Township. Children of Pugh Floyd and wives. Pugh
Floyd and Charity Pitman had 3 children, and Pugh and Jane Graham had 12
children, for a total of 15 children. I don't believe that Pugh and 3rd
wife Sarah had any children together, but Sarah had at least 5 children
from her previous marriage, none of whom I've traced. Most of the full
names and birth dates given below are from Mrs. Janet Woodard via Martha
Miller. I don't know what the original source for them is. Some of the
children are proven by the various census records. I don’t have hard
proof for the others yet.

Elizabeth Floyd was born 8 Jun 1814 in
Horry Dist, SC. I don't know anything else about Elizabeth. The 1820
census showed Pugh Floyd with only one daughter age "under 10" (born ca
1810/20), although he had two daughters born in that range, Elizabeth,
and sister Sarah (born 1817). In 1830 Pugh had one daughter 10-14
(born 1815/20) which doesn't fit Elizabeth exactly, but does fit sister
Sarah much better. It is possible that Elizabeth died before 1820. I think (but am not sure) that Elizabeth was not the daughter at home in 1820 and 1830, suggesting she had died or else was being raised by other relatives. |

William Floyd was born 22 Jan 1816 in Horry
Dist, SC. He was apparently with his parents for the 1820 census (age
"under 10", born ca 1810/20). He was home in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca
1820/25). William Floyd married Mary A. Floyd sometime before 1836 in Horry Dist, SC. She was born ca 1815/16 a daughter of Hugh Floyd (c1780). William Floyd was listed on the 1840 census in Horry very near his parents. There was an older male (born ca 1820/25) with them in 1840. He was too old to be a child of theirs, so he could be a brother, or brother-in-law. Sarah Jane Floyd was born 26 Sep 1817 in
Horry Dist, SC. I don't know anything else about her. The 1820 census
showed Pugh Floyd with only one daughter age "under 10" (born ca
1810/20), although he had two daughters born in that range, Sarah and
sister Elizabeth (born 1814). It is possible that one of the two had died before then, or that only one was at home, and the other was with other relatives (due to the recent death of their mother Charity Pitman). In 1830, Sarah seems to be home still, aged 10-14 (born ca 1815/20). She did not seem to be home in 1840, so possibly married or dead by then. |

Hugh James Floyd was born 28 Mar 1819 (per
Mrs. Woodard's data, his tombstone has a different date of 19 Aug 1821,
but this seems to be wrong) in Horry Dist, SC. He was apparently with
his parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20) and
apparently home in 1830, age 5-9 (born 1820/25). He seems to have been
at home with his parents still for the 1840 census, listed as age 20-29
(born ca 1810/20) which fits. Hugh was still with his parents for the 1850 census, listed as "H. J." Floyd age 31. Hugh married a widow ca 1853/56 in Horry, or possibly in neighboring Marion District. She was Eliza C. Gerald, born ca 1829/30. She was a daughter of Levi and Elizabeth O. Gerald of Marion District. Eliza was previously married to Enos T. Edwards (1827-1853) son of Richard Edwards of Marion. All of this is proven by Marion Equity Records for Levi and Elizabeth Gerald. Hugh and Eliza were listed on the 1860 census in Horry just a few houses from his parents. Prudence Floyd was born 28 Mar 1821 in
Horry Dist, SC. I don't know anything else about her yet. She seems to
be home with parents for the 1830 census (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25). but
she did not appear to be with them in 1840, so probably married
or dead by then. It is thought that she is the same Prudence who married Joseph Floyd, son of Hugh Floyd (c1780). See his page for more on them. |

Celia Floyd was born 16 Mar 1823 in Horry
Dist, SC. She seems to be home with parents for the 1830 census (age
5-9, born ca 1820/25), and appears to be with them in 1840, age 15-19
(born ca 1820/25). She married Hugh Floyd son of Hugh Floyd (c1780) and Susannah --- sometime ca 1840/43 in Horry Dist. Hugh Floyd (Jr) died sometime between 1847 and 1850. Also with Celia in 1870 was a 28 year old Alfred Watts, whom Celia would marry sometime after 1870. Sarah Ward, widow of William Ward was with Celia also. I found Alfred and Celia, and one of her daughters, and several of her children (Celia's grandchildren) on the 1880 census in Horry, in Gallivants Ferry Township. "under 5", born ca 1825/30). She appeared to be with them in 1840,
listed in the age 15-19 group (born ca 1820/25). According to data shared with me by Martha Miller, Patience married Lewis A. Gerald. Lewis was born ca 1818/19 in Horry Dist, SC. He is a son of Henry Gerald and Patience (Floyd) (daughter of Frederick Floyd). I found Lewis and Patience on the 1850 census in Horry. They were not particularly close to any other Floyd families then: Lewis Gerrald 31, Patience 25, Sarah M. 3, Samuel 1, all born South Carolina. Patience apparently died in the 1850's, for by the 1860 census, Lewis had a new wife, named Margaret. I don't know her maiden name. I found Lewis and Margaret on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census in Horry Co, SC, those last two census years in Floyds Township. |
