·        9 Apr 2008 – Modified by Marty Grant, I added information about James Floyd’s first wife, Elizabeth Lewis, daughter of Jacob Lewis (shared by Bob Delamorton).

·        23 Feb 2008 - Created by Marty Grant

Special thanks to Bob Delamorton for documentation shared on this family.

James Floyd was born before 1755 per his age on the 1800 census. His parents are unknown, nor is it known how he relates to the other older Floyds of Horry County, but it seems highly likely they are all related.

This might be the same James Floyd who is listed on the 1769 tax list in Dobbs Co., NC with his father Samuel Floyd. They are listed together as father and son. John Floyd and Thomas Floyd are also listed. (1769 Tax List - Dobbs Co., NC). (These Floyds of Dobbs appear to be the same who were in Northampton and Hertford Co., NC prior to 1769.)

If that is the same James in Dobbs County in 1769, then this proves his father is Samuel Floyd. It would have to be the older Samuel Floyd of Horry. Orson Floyd (a.k.a. Austin Floyd) did live in Dobbs Co., NC before moving to Horry, so that establishes a connection between the two places.

James Floyd married Elizabeth Lewis sometime before ca 1784. Her name is proven by an undated petition filed by James Floyd of Georgetown Dist., SC. In the petition he stated that his father-in-law Jacob Lewis of Robeson Co., NC had given a slave to his daughter Elizabeth Floyd, wife of James Floyd, but due to the laws, James wasn’t allowed to bring the slave into South Carolina. There was no date, but it would have to have been between 1769 (formation of Georgetown District) and 1801 (formation of Horry from Georgetown).

Elizabeth Lewis was born ca 1755/65 per her ages on the 1800 and 1810 census. She may have been born in Robeson Co., NC where her father was living. Her father was Jacob Lewis, but I don’t know her mother’s name yet.

James Floyd was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District:

On 15 Mar 1809 a plat was made for James Floyd for 788 acres on the north east side of Drowning Creek near the head of Cedar Creek, surrounding a tract of 200 acres already granted to James Floyd. It was bordered by James Johnston, the Estate of Francis Floyd, Thomas Dawsey and Lewis Floyd. (Horry Co., SC Plat Book A, page 76 from Horry County Historical Society)

On the same date (15 Mar 1809) a plat was made for Austin Floyd and Frederick Floyd Jr for 188 acres on the north east side of Drowning Creek bordering James Floyd and vacant land. (Horry Co., SC Plat Book A, page 75b from Horry County Historical Society)

James was listed on the 1810 census in Horry District. There were two adult males and two adult females in the household. I don't know who the extra adults were.

On 5 Feb 1810 James Floyd sued Isaac Hyott for debt. On 30 Jul 1808 Isaac Hyott signed a note to pay Samuel Floyd (or the bearer of the note) $285 in cash by the next January 1st. Samuel Floyd received $69 on 14 Feb 1809, and $20 on 24 Feb 1809. Apparently Samuel Floyd sold the note to James who was trying to collect the rest. (Lucille Utley and Teri Dalrymple, Marion County Court Records Court of Common Pleas 1788 to June 1861, Three Rivers Historical Society 2002.)

On 8 Jun 1814 a plat was made for Henry Elliott for 470 acres on the north east side of Drowning Creek on Big Bay and Alligator Bay bordering Francis Buffking, James Floyed and Henry Elliott. (Horry Co., SC Plat Book B, page 50 from Horry County Historical Society)

On 15 Jun 1814 a plat was made for Henry Elliott for 232 acres on the north east side of Drowning Creek bordering Francis Buffking, Henry Elliott, Richard Lewis and James Floyed. (Horry Co., SC Plat Book B, page 47 from Horry County Historical Society)

On 21 ??? 1814 a plat was made for Lewis Floyed for 400 acres on north east side of Little Pee Dee River on Cart Wheel Bay adjoining Robert Stevens, James Floyed, Richard Lewis, Mary Foxworth and vacant land. (Horry Co., SC Plat Book B, page 49 from Horry County Historical Society)

On 27 Feb 1815 a plat was made for Henry Elliott for 242 acres on the north east side of Drowning Creek on Juniper Bay and Cow Bog Bay adjoining James Floyed, Austin and Frederick Floyd, Austin Floyd and Henry Elliott. (Horry Co., SC Plat Book B, page 57 from Horry County Historical Society)

Elizabeth (Lewis) Floyd died sometime after 1810, but before 1818. By that time it appears that James Floyd was married to Elizabeth Page. She was born ca 1770/75 per the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census records. She is a daughter of Joseph Page and a Miss Horn.

Joseph Page died in 1818 and his estate papers include his undated Will. He named Daughters Elizabeth Floyd, Delilah Floyd and Ann Herrin, and sons Abraham, John and Elias Page. Abraham is described as the oldest son, and Susannah Page as the youngest daughter. Witnessed by Edmund Price and Delilah Price. Joseph Page (Jr) isn't mentioned in the Will, but the estate records show he is also a son. Theophilus Floyd (husband of Delilah Page) was one of the purchasers at an Estate Sale on 4 Mar 1818. Nothing here proves that Elizabeth Page Floyd, daughter of Joseph Page, is the same person as Elizabeth, wife of James Floyd, but it does seem likely they are one and the same. (Marion Co., SC Probate Roll # 630).

James Floyd was listed on the 1820 census in Horry, in fact there were three James Floyds listed, this one, his son James, and Frederick's son James.

On 1 Aug 1825 Davis S. Harllee, Esq., Sheriff of Marion District sold land to James Floyd of Horry District at public auction. The land had belonged to John Newsom. It was described as being 4000 acres on the east side of the Little Peedee River. Witnessed by Samuel Hodges, H. G. Fladger, Samuel Floyd Jr. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book L, page 185).

Another deed was made on the same date involving all the same parties, this was for 3000 acres on the west side of Little Pee Dee. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book L, page 191).

On 6 Oct 1825 James Floyd Senr of Horry sold land to Francis Floyd of Marion for $300, being 300 acres on th enorth east side of Little Pee Dee and both sides of the raft swamp. Signed by James Floyd Senr. Witnessed by James Floyd and Lewis Floyd. The deed was proven before Harmon Floyd, Q.U. (Justice of the Quorum) on 13 Nov 1827. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book N, page 17).

On 19 Oct 1825 James Floyd Senr of Horry Dist., sold 2 acres in Marion for $10 to Moses Smith, John Carmichael, George Melvin, D. Carmichael, James Campbell, John Turbeville, Tapley Moody, Isom Moody and Enos Tart, Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The land was on the south west side of Little Pee Dee River being part of the John Newsom lands. Signed by James Floyd, witnessed by Charles Reaves and Solomon Owens. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book L, page 291).

On 7 Dec 1827 James Floyd Senr of Horry sold land to David P. F. Newsom of Marion District for $400. The land was all of the lands he purchased from the Sheriff in 1825, excepting 300 acres sold to Francis Floyd and 400 acres sold to William Looper and 2 acres to the church, totaling 6300 acres. James signed with a mark this time. Witnesses were Francis Floyd, Q.U. (Justice of the Quorum) and James Floyd. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book M, page 112).

On 27 Feb 1828 Elizabeth Floyd, wife of James Floyd Senr relinquished her dower rights to the land sold to David Newsom. Signed by Elizabeth Floyd before Harmon Floyd, QU (Justice of the Quorum). (Marion Co., SC Deed Book N, page 42).

James Floyd died ca 1828 (source?) in Horry District.

Elizabeth was not listed on the 1850 census, she probably died before then.

An undated (after ca 1850) summons for partition lists the estate of Elizabeth Floyd, wife of James Floyd, deceased and names the heirs. There were quite a few of them. (Horry County Court of Probate, Box 3, Number 29, thanks to Bob Delamorton for sharing this with me):

The first group are the living children of James and Elizabeth. The second group are the children of Lewis Floyd, deceased, though his name wasn't given on this list. The next group are the children of John Johnston and wife Celia Floyd. The last group is the children of Frederick Floyd. This is quite a nice record to have!

Children of James Floyd and Elizabeth Lewis and Elizabeth Page. The Estate record (ca 1850) names the children of JamesFloyd, as well as the children of their deceased children. That record proves eight children. The 1800 census seems to show a daughter born ca 1790/1800 who is unidentified. She could have died young, or not been their own child. It seems likely that all of the children of James Floyd are from his first wife Elizabeth Lewis, and none by Elizabeth Page, though I could be wrong about that.

James Elliott and wife are the plaintiff’s in the estate record mentioned above. It is probable that Mrs. Elliott is also a child of James Floyd, but I haven’t been able to identify her yet.

3.      Dicey Floyd (c1787)

5.      Pugh Floyd (c1791)

6.      Lemuel Floyd (c1800)

7.      James L. Floyd (1800)

8.      Elizabeth Floyd (c1803)

Lewis Floyd (1780/84) is a proven child of James and Elizabeth. His heirs are named in the James & Elizabeth estate papers. See his own page for additional information.

Celia Floyd was born ca 1774/84 or perhaps ca 1784. Census analysis shows that James Floyd had a daughter born ca 1774/84 with him on the 1800 census. This is probably Celia but it isn't a perfect match with her next census which shows her with her husband John Johnston aged 16-25 (c1784/94). If she was born in 1784 both records fit perfectly.

Celia seems to home with her parents for the 1790 census (no ages given), and seems to be home in 1800, aged 16-25 (1774/84).

She married John Johnston (aka Johnson) before 1810 in Horry District. John was born ca 1784/1790. There were two men named John Johnston in Horry at the same time over the years, both born in the 1780's. There is plenty of room for confusion as to who was who. They used "Sr" and "Jr" to distinguish themselves. I think the older one is the one who married Celia Floyd, but I'm not 100% sure. (Note that the author is also a Horry County Johnston researcher.)

John Johnston is listed on the 1810 census in Horry. There was only one John on this record. He is next door to his brother-in-law Lewis Floyd.

1 Female(s) 0-9 (1800-1810) Margaret Johnston (c1810) daughter

It appears that Celia Floyd Johnston died ca 1818 to ca 1820 in Horry. John Johnston married again (or so it seems) before 1820. I don't know the name of his second wife.

John Johnston "Senior" is listed on the 1820 census in Horry. Strangely the other John isn't listed, but he was probably around or there would have been no need to use the suffix.

John may have died before 1850 for I didn't find him on that census. There is a John L. Johnston (c1787) in Horry, but I believe that is the younger of the two Johns.

I have not yet found who John Johnston's 2nd wife was, nor who any of their children were. His children with Celia Floyd are named in the James and Elizabeth Floyd estate records as noted earlier.

Dicey Floyd was born ca 1786/87 per her age on the 1850 census (63). She was probably born in Georgetown District in the section that later became Horry Co., SC.

Dicey seems to be with her parents for the 1790 census (no ages). She is probably still at home in 1800 age 10-15 (1784/90).

Dicey Floyd married Hardy Lewis between 1800 and ca 1809 in Horry District. He was born ca 1775/80, son of William Lewis and Mourning Vanpelt. (W. W. Sellers, A History of Marion Co., SC, 1902, pp. 480-483.) Mr. Sellers gave a good outline of the Lewis family in his book.

They are listed on the 1810 census in Horry.

On 26 Jul 1841 Hardy Lewis made a deed of gift to his son Joel Lewis. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book U page 276).

On 22 Sep 1846 Hardy Lewis made a deed of gift to his daughter Celia Smith, and on the same date he made a deed of gift to daughter Cada Price. The plat mentions land laid out for Mourning Grice as well. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book U pp. 52-55.)

On that same date Hardy Lewis made a deed of gift to his daughter Margaret Lewis. (Marion Co., SC Deed Book V, page 240).

Hardy Lewis died on 29 Jul 1847, intestate (no Will). This is proven when James R. Lewis (son of Hardy and Dicey) sued Dicey for dower rights on 29 Dec 1849. Dicey made a similar suit on the same date against son William Lewis. (Marion Co., SC Equity Roll # 150 and # 156).

The Estate record for Hardy Lewis mentions widow Dicey and 10 children: Isaac Lewis, Wade Grice, James D. Smith, Moses Smith, Henry Price, John Price, Elizabeth Lewis, William Lewis, James R. Lewis and Joel Lewis.

Dicey was listed on the 1850 census in Marion with a few children still home. Some of her married children were listed nearby. Dicey was 63, Elizabeth 28, Joel 21, Adaline 12. Adaline is probably a grandchild or a niece.

There was another Dicey Floyd (age 70) listed on the 1850 census in Marion District, I'm not sure who she was, but she appears to be the mother of Solomon and Joseph Lewis.

I didn't find Dicey on the 1860 census so she was probably dead by then.

Frederick Floyd (1788) is a proven child of James and Elizabeth. His heirs are named in the James & Elizabeth estate papers. See his own page for additional information.
Pugh Floyd (c1791) is a proven child of James and Elizabeth. He was named in the James & Elizabeth estate papers. See his own page for additional information.
Lemuel Floyd (c1800) is a proven child of James and Elizabeth. He was named in the James & Elizabeth estate papers. See his own page for additional information.
James L. Floyd (1800) is a proven child of James and Elizabeth. He was named in the James & Elizabeth estate papers. See his own page for additional information.
Elizabeth Floyd was born ca 1802/03 per her age of 47 on the 1850 census. She seems to be home with her parents for the 1810 census, aged under 10 (born 1800/10).

She married Henry Elliott (Jr) before 1820 in Horry District. He was born ca 1799/1800. I don't know who his parents were. He might be a son of Henry Elliott Sr (c1753) and wife Mary (c1773) who lived nearby.

They are listed on the 1820 census in Horry.

They are listed on the 1860 census in Horry: Henry Elliott 61, Elizabeth 56, Anna 37, Wm H. 28, Levi 24, Allen 21, Franklin 17 and Bethel 13.

Elizabeth Floyd Elliott died sometime between 1860 and 1870, presumably in Horry County.

Henry was listed on the 1870 census in Horry in Floyds Township: Henry Elliott 71, Bethel 22, Anna 40, and Quincy F. 18.

I didn't find Henry Elliott on the 1880 census. He was probably dead by then.
