John Grant was born ca 1828/29 per his age on the 1850 census (21). The 1850 census listed his birth place as South Carolina. I would guess he was born in Marlboro District or nearby.

I don't know who his parents were. There were a couple of Grants in the area who qualify. Census analysis helps narrow it down a bit, but doesn't really prove who his parents are.

By the 1830 census John would have been about one year old. There were two Grant households in Marlboro with sons under age 5 (born ca 1825/30): Malachi Grant (c1790) and William Grant (c1775).

By 1840 John would have been about 11 years old. In Marlboro only William Grant (c1775) had a child that age with him, an apparent son aged 10-14 (c1825/30). In neighboring Richmond Co., NC Malachi Grant (c1790) had two boys who could fit, aged 10-23 (c1816/30), and John Grant Sr (c1780). had one boy that age but he is already positively identified as someone else.

John is listed on the 1850 census in Marlboro Dist., SC. Peter Grant (c1828) is next door, relationship unknown. John is living with a Smith family as a laborer, perhaps not related. He is also listed with a race of "M" for Mulatto, the only one so listed in 1850 Marlboro, though all their kinfolk in neighboring Richmond Co., NC were listed that way in 1850. Like many of the Grant families in 1850 Marlboro, there is a little curley letter at the end of his name that makes it look like "Grantz" instead of "Grant."

I wasn't able to find John Grant on the 1860 census, not in Marlboro or elsewhere.

Children of John Grant. The 1850 census shows John to be unmarried. If he married and had kids it was after 1850 and I have no record of it.
