A note about sources

I (Marty Grant) am not related to the John Grant family as far as I know. I am very interested in him though.

John Grant was born ca 1800/10, presumably in Wayne Co, NC.  Two John Grant's the same age were listed on the 1830 census in Wayne Co, NC. Both had children listed. I don't know which of these two listings are for the John Grant under study here, but I suspect the one on page 535 is the same John:

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1830 Wayne County, NC pg 523 John Grant 0000100000000-2100010000000
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 20-29 (1800-1810)	John GRANT
1 Female(s) 30-39 (1790-1800)	Wife?
1 Female(s) 5-9 (1820-1825)	Daughter?
2 Female(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)	Daughter?
					Daughter?

1830 Wayne County, NC pg 535 John Grant 1000100000000-1000100000000
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 20-29 (1800-1810)	John GRANT
1 Male(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)	Son?
1 Female(s) 20-29 (1800-1810)	Wife? Mary
1 Female(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)	Daughter?

The 1830 census alphabetized the listings, but each district was separate and alpha within itself, so we can't tell who the exact neighbors were, we can tell who lived in the same general area. Using this, the John Grant listed on page 523 above was probably in Indian Springs District, based on two of my known ancestors listed nearby in the same list (Captain Reason's District). The John Grant on page 535 was in Killingsworth District. Based on some of the others in that list, this would seem to be the same John Grant found in Waynesboro District in 1840, which is the John we are studying. The other John in 1830 (page 523) may be John Grant with wife Lisha, or a previous wife.

In 1840, the John Grant (wife Mary) that we are studying was in Waynesboro District. He was two pages from Richard D. Grant in the same district, who was about his age, so they could be brothers.

1840 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1840 Wayne County, NC pg 212 John Grant 0000010000000-1210010000000
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 30-39        (1800-1810)		John GRANT (1800/10) s/o ? --> d 1844
1 Female(s) 30-39 (1800-1810) Mary "Polly" --- Grant (1800/10) wife
1 Female(s) 10-14 (1825-1830) Daughter? (1825/30)
2 Female(s) 5-9 (1830-1835) Daughter?
						Daughter?
1 Female(s) 0-4 (1835-1840) Daughter?

This John Grant died in 1844, prior to 13 October. On that date William R. Lane and William Hollowell were appointed his administrators.

On 2 Nov 1844 an estate sale was held, and Polly Grant and Richard Grant were among the purchasers.

On 21 Nov 1844, Polly Grant, widow of John Grant had a dower laid off for her.

The 1830 and 1840 census indicate John and Mary had several children, mostly daughters. I didn't find any evidence of them or Mary in the 1850 census. Mary may have died, or remarried, and the daughters may all have married by 1850, or perhaps they all moved away.

William R. Lane, one of the men appointed administrator in 1844, was found on the 1850 census in Wayne Co, NC in the district North of the Neuse, only about 20 houses from Stephen Grant and wife Mary.  I wasn't able to find William Hollowell in 1850.

Unfortunately, this is all I know about the John and Mary Grant family.
