Catherine (---) was probably born in the 1750's or earlier. I have no data to narrow her birth down any better than that. I don't know her maiden name. I suppose she was born in Virginia someplace.

Catherine married a Mr. Hensley in the 1770's or earlier, somewhere in Virginia. It has been speculated that she was married to Chrisley Hensley who lived in the frontier region of Tazewell Co., VA. He lived there long before Tazewell was actually created, back when the county was Botetourt (formed 1769), then Fincastle (formed 1772), then Montgomery (formed 1776), and he may have died while it was still Montgomery. However the place where he lived later became Wythe County (1789), and finally Tazewell County (1799).

To date I have seen no solid evidence that Catherine was married to Chrisley Hensley, but it does fit for she and her children were in the Tazewell area early on, as was he.

Another possibility is Charles Hensley who was also in that area, but he seems less likely. One other possibility is a Benjamin Hensley who was in old Montgomery Co., VA. I don't know which Benjamin this was since there were many men of that name in Virginia and North Carolina who could have moved to that region. For now Chrisley Hensley does seem the best suspect to be Catherine's husband, but as noted, I've seen no proof other than them both being in the same region.

After the death of her Mr. Hensley, Catherine married William Davis, a Revolutionary War Pensioner. We don't know when they were married exactly, but sometime between ca 1794 and 1805 in Tazewell Co., VA. William was born ca 1747/48 (per his age given on his Pension Application of 85 in 1833), probably in Albemarle Co., VA. It is possible that he was married to someone prior to his marriage to the widow Hensley. Consider this article written in 1896 about the family:

The settlement at the mouth of Spruce, where Lewis Rutherford now lives, was made by Benjamin Sprouse. At just what time he settled there is not known, but he raised a large family of boys and girls, and with Reuben Thacker, a brother-in-law, moved further to the west, selling his place to William Davis, who came from Albermarle County, and claimed to be a first cousin of Thomas Jefferson. Davis married a Mrs. Hensley, of Russell County, who was the mother by her former marriage of four sons and one daughter. Three of the sons - William, Robert and John - and the daughter, whose name is forgotten. There was another son - Daniel - who had been captured by the Indians in 1790, and who remained with the Indians until 1807, when he joined the family and married a daughter of Thomas Davis, of Albermarle County, and niece of the William Davis above mentioned, settled at the mouth of Rockhouse Fork of Pigeon. Of the other Hensley boys, Robert married a daughter of Capt. Henry Farley, and settled at the mouth of Sugartree; William married a Miss Brewster, and settled opposite the mouth of Pond, on what is now known as the Lawson farm, and John married a Miss Davis and settled lower down the river. The daughter above mentioned married William Davis, a son of Thomas Davis of Albermarle, and nephew of the William Davis above mentioned, who settled near the mouth of Pigeon. William Davis, Sr., had one daughter by his first wife. William Davis, Sr., married a Miss Runyon, by whom he had two daughters, one of whom married Jess Stratredge and the other Jacob Runyon. The write-up is a little confusing, but it is the basis of the family structure since primary evidence has yet to be found showing how all of these folks are related. The article is not to be considered primary evidence since it was written a generation or more after the death of William and Catherine Davis. However the source for the information could have been someone that knew them personally.

There are several Tazewell Co., VA Deeds and Court Records that show that William Davis and Catherine were husband and wife and that they were associated with the Hensleys there. I don't have these records but I have seen that they exist.

The 1790 census is lost for Virginia. There is a William Davis on the 1788 tax list in Montgomery Co., VA (this was before the formation of Wythe County). He was taxed for himself and for James Davis, perhaps his son. There is also a Capt. William Davis listed. Benjamin Hensley was also listed in Montgomery that year as was a George Hansley. I don't know if either of those are the same William Hensley or not.

The 1800 census is lost for Virginia also. Laura found a William Davis Sr and a Jr listed on the tax list that year in Russell Co., VA (which borders Tazewell and is one of the parent counties for Tazewell).

William Davis appears on several Tazewell County records beginning in late 1800, and continuing a few years until 1814 when they were listed in a Tazewell deed as being residents of Floyd Co., KY at that time. (Tazewell Co., VA Deed Book 2, page 244, reference shared by Laura Schreibman)

The 1810 census is lost for Tazewell County. I checked Floyd Co., KY but William Davis wasn't listed there, so they must have moved there between 1810 and 1814.

On  6 Jul 1814 William Davis gave permission in Floyd Co., KY for his step-daughter Caty Hensley to marry Abraham Miller.

Catherine (---) Hensley Davis died sometime between 1814 and 25 Mar 1819 for on that date William Davis married Mary Taylor in Floyd Co., KY. She was born ca 1789/90 (per 1850 census).

William Davis wasn't listed on the 1820 census in Floyd Co., KY as far as I could find. I found five men of that name in Cabell Co., VA (now WV). They were all on the same page since the census was alphabetical. We can remove all but one based on their ages for the other four were too young to be William Davis (c1748). The final one is wrong too, for  the age of Mrs. Davis is too old to be Mary Taylor Davis (c1790).

I found a William Davis in neighboring Floyd Co., KY in 1820 who is a better fit. He is near some Hensleys, Runyons and Thomas Davis.

In 1824 Logan County was formed from parts of Cabell, Giles and Kanawha Counties. Many of the Hensleys fell into this new county, and it seems the William Davis family did as well or moved there anyway.

William Davis Sr. and Jr. are listed on the 1824 Logan Co., VA Tax List. William Sr. had one white male over 16 (himself), and four horses.

There is only one William Davis on the 1827 Logan tax list. I don't know if it Sr. or Jr. He has only one horse, so it might be Jr.

A William Davis is listed on the 1830 census in Logan Co., VA, but he is too young to be this William. There is a William Davis in neighboring Pike Co., KY and that appears to be him. Pike was formed in 1821 from Floyd.

In 1832 William Davis applied for his Revolutionary War Pension in Logan Co., VA, but was listed as a resident of Kentucky on the line but closer to the Logan court house.

William Davis is on the 1833 Logan tax list. He has two males over 16, and five horses. His entire entry is marked through suggesting he wasn't a resident of the county at that time, or perhaps he was exempt due to his age (he was about 85 then).

William Davis is on the 1837 Logan tax list. He has one male over 16, and one horse.

There are three William Davises listed in Logan Co., VA in 1840. The ages make it obvious which is this one. He is also listed as a Revolutionary War Pensioner, age 96.

William Davis died on 23 May 1842 in Logan Co., VA (now WV) as reported by his widow Mary when she filed her own widow's pension a few years later (filed with his).

Mary Davis is listed on the 1843 Logan tax list. She has no white males in her household over 16, and has two horses.

Mary is listed on the 1850 census Logan Co., VA. There is another widow Mary Davis listed in the county, who was a widow of a different William Davis (nephew of this one I think).

I didn't find Mary on the 1860 census in Logan. She was alive as late as 1856 according to the pension records.
Children of Mr. Hensley and Catherine (---). The only proven child is daughter Caty (Catherine) who is proven by her 1814 marriage bond which lists her as a step-daughter of William Davis. The 1896 article shows that William, Robert, John and Daniel were children. I've seen no proof that they are Catherine's children, but they did all associate with each other across three states, so it does seem likely. There are other possible children as well who were associated. None are proven conclusively, but it does all fit. Some may be nephews and nieces instead of children though.

It also appears that William Davis and his first wife (name unknown) had children, though I don't know who they were. He and his 3rd wife Mary Taylor also appear to have had several children. I have not attempted to trace them.

James Hensley (c1770/75). James Hensley wasn't mentioned in the 1896 article. If he does in fact belong here, he may have been forgotten due to him moving to Illinois early on, and not to West Virginia with the rest of the family.

James was in Tazewell Co., VA when the other Hensleys were, and he went with them to Logan (now Pike) Co., KY when they did. From there he went to Clark Co., IL, later to Coles Co., IL. He never lived in WV as far as I know. His son Aaron Hensley (c1806) did move to WV after his marriage, but not to Logan County.
William Hensley (c1774).William Hensley was mentioned in the 1896 article as a son of the widow Hensley. I have no primary evidence that he is her son, but the circumstantial evidence supports the article.

William was in Tazewell with the other Hensleys, and he went to Floyd (now Pike) Co., KY with the rest. From there he went into neighboring Logan Co., VA (now WV) as did most of the others.

Daniel Hensley (c1774). Daniel Hensley was named in the 1896 article as a member of this family. He is also found on the Tazewell, Floyd, Pike and Logan records at the same time as the other Hensleys.

Daniel's 2nd wife was Jamima Davis, who according to the marriage record is a daughter of Thomas and Nancy (---) Davis. The 1896 article states that Daniel married a Miss Davis, a niece of William Davis, his step-father. The article does show that Thomas Davis was a brother to William.
Robert Hensley (c1777). Robert Hensley is mentioned in the 1896 article as a child of the widow Hensley who married William Davis.

Robert is found in the Tazewell, Floyd, Pike and Logan records at the same time as his probable siblings.
John Hensley (1775/94). John Hensley is mentioned in the 1896 article as being a part of this family. It also states that he married a Miss Davis, but doesn't give her relationship to the other Davises mentioned.

John is found in the Tazewell, Floyd and Logan County records along with the other Hensleys.
Stephen Hensley (c1784). Stephen Hensley was not mentioned in the 1896 article, but he was associated with the other Hensleys in Tazewell Co., VA and in Cabell (now Logan) Co., WV.

Stephen married Nancy Farley in 1814. In 1817 Robert Hensley married her sister Judith.

These connections all show Stephen to be related to the rest, but is he also a son of widow Catherine? He could be a nephew instead, but for now I'll list him as a son since he is definitely related somehow.
Mary Hensley was born ca 1786/87 per her age on the 1850 census (63). She was born in Virginia per that record, probably in Montgomery (now Tazewell) County, or possibly in Russell County, also a parent to Tazewell.

Mary was mentioned in the 1896 article, though her given name wasn't mentioned. She was listed as having married William Davis (Jr), a nephew of her step-father, a son of Thomas Hensley.

I didn't find a marriage record for them anywhere, but the marriage record of one of their sons (Joseph Davis) shows that his parents were "William Davis" and "Polly Hensley." The probably married in the 1810's at least, based on the ages of the older children at home in 1830. William Davis was born ca 1780/90 per his age in 1830, or ca 1790/1800 per his age in 1840. His 1820 entry (if it is the right one) gives a birth of ca 1794/1804. That reconciles to ca 1794/1800 if we use 1820 and 1840 together. Since these aren't consistent, I'm not sure which to use as the most accurate.

I'm not sure where they are for the 1820 census. As noted earlier there are five men named William Davis on the 1820 census in Cabell Co., VA (Logan County was formed in 1824 from Cabell, Giles and Kanawha). None were Giles or Kanawha in 1820. There was just one in Floyd Co., KY. The one in Floyd is the elder William, married to the widow Catherine Hensley, so that means one of the five in Cabell is probably this William. The census was alphabetical, and all five were on the same page:

Of those we can eliminate the one who was age 45 and up (born before 1775), for that doesn't fit this William. Our William would have had at least two sons under 10 and three daughters under 10 per the 1830 census. Only one of the entries in 1820 fits and that is the second one in the list above, so that is probably the one we are interested in, though even that isn't a perfect match.

William Davis died sometime in the 1840's, presumably in Logan Co., VA (now WV).

Mary and some of the children are listed on the 1850 census in Logan. They are next door to Elijah Hensley, Mary's probable brother.

I didn't find Mary Hensley Davis on the 1880 census. She probably died by then.
Elijah Hensley (c1794). Elijah Hensley wasn't mentioned in the 1896 article, but he was associated with members of this family. I didn't find records for him in Tazewell. He was probably still a minor when the family left there. He does appear in Floyd, Pike and Logan County records with the rest of the Hensleys. He listed Hawkins Co., TN as his birth place on his 1869 marriage record, so if that is the case then perhaps he doesn't belong in this family. If he is not Catherine's child, he may be a nephew at least, I'll leave him in this family for now.
Catherine Hensley was born ca 1794/1800 per census analysis. She is a proven child of Catherine for her marriage bond (21 Jul 1814 Floyd Co., KY) lists William Davis as her step-father and he gave permission for her to marry Abraham Miller. She is proven, but wasn't mentioned in the 1896 article. She seems to have died relatively young in the 1830's, so perhaps she was long forgotten by whomever provided the info for the article in 1896.

I found them listed on the 1820 census in Cabell Co., VA (one of the parents of Logan County). There were two Abraham Millers listed, one set was too old to be them.

Abraham is still in Logan for the 1840 census. Catherine may have died before then for no one her age is in the household.

I couldn't find them on the 1850 census. I did find an apparent widow Elizabeth Sandridge (or Standridge?) age 36 in Logan with a houseful of Miller children who fit age-wise with the 1840 census entry. One of the children was named Abraham. Elizabeth could be the older Abraham's 2nd wife, and after his death she married  Sandridge who died before 1850. This is speculative of course, but it fits. Here is the census entry in brief: Elizabeth Sandridge 36; Abraham Millard (sic), 15; Andrew J. Miller, 14; Benjn Miller, 12; Rebecca Miller 10; Joseph Miller 8. All born in Virginia.

They were the only Millers in Logan Co., VA in 1850.
