Daniel Hensley was born ca 1773/74 per his age on the 1850
census (76). He was born in Virginia, county unknown. I don't know who his parents are, but it seems likely he is closely related to the other Hensleys of Logan Co., WV, namely Robert Hensley (c1777), William Hensley (c1774), James Hensley and Stephen Hensley (c1784). They could all be brothers, but that isn't proven. They all may be children of the widow Catherine Hensley. An article in an 1896 book states that Robert, William, Daniel and John are brothers and sons of a widowed Mrs. Hensley who married William Davis second:
The above article doesn't mention Stephen Hensley or James Hensley who were often associated with the others. Daniel Hensley, along with Robert Hansley, William Hansley and James Hensley signed a petition in 1798 asking for the creation of a new county called Tazewell. The signers were residents of Russell and Wythe Counties. (Shared by Laura Schreibman) Tazewell County was created in 1799 from parts of Russell and Wythe, effective in the year 1800. At that time Tazewell was pretty large and included much territory that is now in West Virginia. The 1800 census is lost for Virginia. Daniel Hensley is listed on an 1802 tax list in Tazewell Co., VA. In 1808 James Peery and wife Phebe deeded something to Daniel Hensley of Kanawha Co., VA. (Tazewell Co., VA Deed Book 1 page 398, shared by Laura Schreibman). The above deed shows that Daniel had move to neighboring Kanawha Co., VA (now WV) between 1802 and 1808, however Daniel was listed on a jury in Tazewell that same year, so perhaps he went back and forth or moved during 1808. On 24 Jul 1809 Daniel Hensley obtained a marriage bond in Floyd Co., KY to marry "Mimy" Davis. Robert Hensley was the bondsman. Jamima Davis was born ca 1783/84 in Virginia (both per 1850 census). On 18 Jul 1809 Thomas and Nancy Davis certified that Mimy Davis was of lawful age. They appear to be her parents. It appears that Daniel had been married prior to his marriage to Jamima, but I haven't found a record of his first wife's name. They are listed on the 1810 census in neighboring Floyd Co., KY as are his probable brothers James and William Hensley. 1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1810 Floyd Co., KY page 99 Daniel Hensley 10010-20010-0-0 Analysis: 1 Male 26-44 (1765/1784) Daniel Hensley (c1774) 1 male 0-9 (1800/1810) Daniel Hensley (c1806) son 1 Female 26-44 (1765/1784) Jamima Davis Hensley (c1784) wife 2 females 0-9 (1800/1810) 1-Daughter? (1804/10) 2-Daughter? (1804/10) 0 Slaves Daniel Hensley is listed on the 1815 tax list in neighboring Cabell Co., VA (now WV). Daniel is listed on the 1820 census in Cabell as were his possible siblings: William Hensley, Robert Hensley and Nancy, widow of Stephen Hensley. Other Hensleys listed included Joseph Hensley, Solomon Hensley (c1779) and Samuel Hensley (c1790). The census was alphabetical, so it isn't clear if any of the Hensleys were neighbors to each other. He is listed clearly as "David" instead of Daniel, but I'm reasonably sure it is the same person. 1820 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1820 Cabell Co., VA page 85 David Hensley 000001-52010 Slaves=0010-0000 Analysis: 1 Male 45+ (bef 1775) Daniel Hensley (c1774) 1 Female 26-44 (1775/1794) Jamima Davis Hensley (c1784) wife 2 females 10-15 (1804/1810) 1-Daughter? (1815/20) 1 Slave Logan County was formed in 1824 from parts of Cabell, Giles and Kanawha Counties. Daniel and his probable siblings fell into the new county. Daniel Hensley was listed on the 1824 tax list in Logan Co., VA. He had one white male over 16 (himself), no blacks and no horses. Daniel Hensley is listed on the 1827 tax list in Logan. I didn't find Daniel on the 1830 census in Logan Co., VA (WV). There is a younger man of the same name listed there, but it isn't this Daniel. A short search turned them up in neighboring Lawrence Co., KY. Lawrence had been formed in 1821 from parts of Floyd and Greenup Counties, so he probably moved back where he had been when he lived in Floyd. They are listed next door to widow Nancy Davis which is probably Jamima's mother. 1830 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1830 Lawrence Co., KY page 291 Daniel Hensley 1010000100000-4224001000000 Slaves=000000-010000 Analysis: 1 Male 50-59 (1770/1780) Daniel Hensley (c1774) 1 male 10-14 (1815/1820) Son? He isn't listed on the 1837 list for Logan. Daniel is listed on the 1840 census in Logan Co., VA. 1840 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census) 1840 Logan Co., VA page 81 Danl Hensley 1001000010000-0033200010000 Slaves=000000-000000 Analysis: 1 Male 60-69 (1770/1780) Daniel Hensley (c1774) 1 male 15-19 (1820/1825) Son? Daniel Hensley is listed on the 1850 census in Logan Co., VA, but not close to any of the other Hensleys.
Daniel Hensley died in the 1850's in Logan Co., VA (now WV). Jamima is listed on the 1860 census in Logan with some of her children and probable grandchildren.
I didn't find Jamima on the 1870 census, she may have died before then. |

Children of Daniel Hensley and Jamima Davis.
The 1810 through 1860 census records show many children for them. They
married in 1809, and some children seem to pre-date that, so it seems
that Daniel had been married prior to Jamima. Some of their children
are proven, others are still unidentified. It is possible that some of
those living with them in the early census records were not their own
children but nieces and nephews instead. In 1860 there is George W.
Maynard (c1849) and Emaline (c1857) living with widow Jamima. They may
be grandchildren, children of a deceased daughter. I haven't figured
out who their parents were yet. There are several Hensley females in
Logan County whose parents haven't been identified, I'd imagine
several of them belong to Daniel and Jamima. See the section for Logan
County on the Hensleys of WV page for the
names of those who aren't connected to parents yet.

Daniel Hensley was born ca 1805/06 in Virginia (perhaps Tazewell County). He is a proven child of Daniel as stated on his own marriage record in 1824 Pike Co., KY. See his page for more information.
Unknown Daughter (1804/10). Daniel Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1810 aged under 10 (1800/10), and still home in 1820 aged 10-15 (1804/10). Mary Hensley was born ca 1812/13 per her age
on the 1860 census (47). She was apparently home with her parents for
the 1820 census aged under 10 (1810/20) and home in 1830 aged 15-19
(1810/15), and home in 1840 aged 20-29 (1810/20).
I didn't find her in 1850, but in 1860 she was living with her widowed mother in Logan Co., VA age 47. I didn't find Mary on the 1870 census. |

Elizabeth Hensley was born ca 1825/26
per her age on the 1850 census (24). In 1860 she was 32 (c1827/28) and
in 1880 she was 52 (c1827/28). Those last two are consistent with each
other. In 1870 she was 44 (c1825/26) which is consistent with the 1850
entry. I don't know which of these is more accurate. Elizabeth seems to be with her parents for the 1830 census age under 5 (1825/30). She was still home in 1840 aged 10-14 (1825/30). She was home in 1850 ("Elizabeth" age 24, born VA) and home in 1860 ("Elisabeth" age 32 born VA). She married Andrew Workman in the late 1860's. He was more than half her age, being born ca 1849/50. They are listed on the 1870 census in Logan with his siblings and widowed mother. They were next door to sister Rebecca Patterson Farley.
Elizabeth and Andrew divorced at some point in the 1870's for she was listed on the 1880 census with her sister Rebecca and marital status was "D" for divorced. Her ex-husband was just a few households away, also listed as divorced.
I have no data on Elizabeth after 1880. |

Rebecca Hensley was born ca 1829/30 per
her age on the 1860 census (30). She was born in Lawrence Co., KY (per
her marriage record). Her marriage record also proves she is a child
of Daniel Hensley. Rebecca seems to be with her parents for the 1830 census age under 5 (1825/30). She was still home in 1840 aged 10-14 (1825/30). She was not with them in 1850, nor listed elsewhere as far as I could find. Rebecca Hensley married Patterson Farley on 27 Mar 1857 in Logan Co., VA (now WV). He was born 4 Jul 1836 (per death certificate) in Pike Co., KY (per marriage record), a son of John Farley and Matilda Stafford (per death certificate). They are on the 1860 census in Logan. Matilda Coleman and daughter are living with them. Is she Rebecca's sister? Or is that John's mother? Her name was Matilda Stafford Farley. Perhaps she had remarried a Mr. Coleman after the death of John Farley. I have not looked into this very far, but my guess is that this is Patterson's mother.
They are listed on the 1870 census in Logan. Her uncle Robert Hensley (c1777) is living with them.
They are on the 1880 census in Logan. Rebecca's sister Elizabeth is living with them.
Rebecca died sometime before ca 1897 for that is when Patterson married again (to another Rebecca, maiden name not known). |

Unknown Son (1820/30). Daniel Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1830 aged under 5 (1825/30). In 1840 he was aged 15-19 (1820/25). The two reconcile if he was born ca 1825.
Unknown Son (1835/40). Daniel Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1840 aged under 5 (1835/40). At this age he was probably a grandson instead of a son.
