Revision History:

William Hensley was born ca 1773/74 per his age on the 1850 census (76). He was born in Virginia, county unknown.

I don't know who his parents are, but it seems likely he is closely related to the other Hensleys of Logan Co., WV, namely Daniel Hensley (c1774), Robert Hensley (c1777) and Stephen Hensley (c1784). They could all be brothers, but that isn't proven. Another potential brother is James Hensley who was often near William. They all may be children of the widow Catherine Hensley.

Since there were several men named William Hensley in old Virginia records, it isn't 100% certain that the records I mention below are all for this man who later lived in Logan Co., WV.

William Hensley was listed on the 1790, 1795, 1796 and 1798 tax lists for Wythe Co., VA.

William Hensley, along with Daniel Hansley, Robert Hansley and James Hensley signed a petition in 1798 asking for the creation of a new county called Tazewell. The signers were residents of Russell and Wythe Counties. (Shared by Laura Schreibman)

Tazewell County was created in 1799 from parts of Russell and Wythe, effective in the year 1800. At that time Tazewell was pretty large and included much territory that is now in West Virginia.

The 1800 census is lost for Virginia.

On 24 Jun 1800 William Hensley married Elizabeth Brewster in Washington Co., VA. Washington and Tazewell bordered at that time.

William Hansley is listed on an 1801 tax list in Tazewell Co., VA and taxed for one male over age 16. Robert Hensley and Stephen Hensley ("Hansley") are listed also.

William moved to neighboring Floyd Co., KY before 1810 for he is listed there on that census (along with his possible brothers Daniel Hensley and James Hensley). The extra adult male could be Robert Hensley (c1777) for he is otherwise missing that year, and unmarried.

By 1820 William Hensley had moved to neighboring Cabell Co., VA (now WV). He was listed on the 1820 census there as were his possible siblings: Robert Hensley, Daniel Hensley (c1774) and Nancy, widow of Stephen Hensley. Other Hensleys listed included Joseph Hensley, Solomon Hensley (c1779) and Samuel Hensley (c1790). The census was alphabetical, so it isn't clear if any of the Hensleys were neighbors to each other.

This census record includes no one Elizabeth's age, so it would appear that she died in the 1810's either in Floyd Co., KY or in Cabell Co., VA (now WV).

Logan County was formed in 1824 from parts of Cabell, Giles and Kanawha Counties. William Hensley fell into the new county.

William Hensley is listed on the 1827 tax list in Logan Co., VA.

He is listed in Logan on the 1830 census as are Daniel Hensley (c1774) and Nancy, widow of Stephen Hensley.

William is listed on the 1833 and 1835 Logan Co., VA tax list with one male over 16, and four horses. In 1837 he is listed with three horses.

William Hensley is listed on the 1840 census in Logan, living by himself. David Sanson (son-in-law) is three houses away, and Polly Hensley (either a widowed daughter-in-law, or an unwed daughter) is two houses away.

William Hensley is listed on the 1850 census in Logan. His daughter Telitha and her family are living with him. Mary "Polly" Hensley, probably a widowed daughter-in-law is just a few houses away.

I wasn't able to find William Hensley on the 1860 census. It appears he died before then, presumably in Logan Co., VA (now WV).

Children of William Hensley and Elizabeth Brewster. The 1810 through 1850 census records show several children. Unfortunately most of them aren't identified. Widow Mary "Polly" Hensley was a neighbor, so perhaps her husband was one of William's sons, or she herself was William's daughter (more likely).

Unknown Daughter (1800/04). William Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1810 aged under 10 (1800/10) and still home in 1820 aged 16-25 (1794/1804). She was gone by 1830.

Unknown Son (1800/10). William Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1810 aged under 10 (1800/10) but gone by 1820.
Unknown Son (1804/10). William Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1810 aged under 10 (1800/10) and still home in 1820 aged 10-15 (1804/10). He was gone by 1830.

This could be Comfort Hensley, but I'm not positive.

Unknown Daughter (1810/15). William Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1820 aged under 10 (1810/20) and still home in 1830 aged 15-19 (1810/15), but gone by 1840.

This is probably Mary "Polly" Hensley (c1811), but I have no solid proof of their relationship. They were neighbors in 1840 and 1850.

Telitha Hensley was born ca 1813/14 per her age on the 1850 census (36). She seems to be home with her parents for the 1820 census aged under 10 (1810/20) and still home in 1830 aged 15-19 (1810/15).

She married David Sanson before ca 1837 in Logan Co., VA (WV). He was born ca 1812/13 in Virginia (both facts per 1850 census). I don't know who his parents are.

They are listed on the 1840 census just three houses from her father in Logan.
