| Mary "Polly" Hensley was born ca 1810/11 per her
age on the 1850 census (39). She was born in Virginia per the same source.
In 1860 she was listed as 46 (born ca 1813/14), and in 1870 she was 60
(c1809/10), and in 1880 she was 65 (c1814/15). These ages don't reconcile
well with each other, but they are not too far apart. They range from ca
1809 to ca 1815. It is isn't clear whether Mary is a Hensley by birth or whether she was married to a Hensley who died. Certain evidence seems to show that she was a single mother. She was listed on the 1840 census as head of household. She had two children born after 1840. The marriage records of one of her children lists her mother's maiden name as "Hensley" and the child's father as John Blair. If Mary is a Hensley by birth, then I don't know who her parents are, but it is probably one of the patriarchs of Logan Co., WV. Census analysis might help a little. Mary would have been about 15 to 21 years old by the time of the 1830 census, depending on her actual birth year. (I skip analysis of the 1820 census since there was no Logan County yet at that point.) William Hensley (c1774) had three apparent daughters that would fit. He is the only one with an apparent daughter Mary's age (who isn't already positively identified). That doesn't mean he is her father, just a good suspect. "Polly Hensley" is listed on the 1837 tax list in Logan Co., VA (now WV). This shows she was already "widowed" by this time, though her three known children were all born after this. She had no white males over 16 in her household, no blacks, and one horse. Looking at the earlier tax lists there is a John Hensley who vanished before 1837. He could be her husband, but it doesn't seem likely. There is also a Comfort Hensley who also vanished before 1837. Since Mary named one of her sons "Comfort" I suspected he was her husband. However since her children were all born later, it seems more likely that he was a brother and her son was named for him for that reason. Polly Hensley is listed on the 1840 census in Logan County. She is two houses from William Hensley (c1774) who could be her father. There is a Comfort Brewster (c1800/10) nearby. William's wife was a Brewster, so Comfort could be related, and he could be the source of the name "Comfort" in the Hensley family if he was a close relative. Mary is listed on the 1850 census in Logan just three houses from William Hensley (c1774), her possible father.
Mary was listed on the 1860 census in Logan. Elijah Hensley (c1794) was the closest Hensley neighbor, about 15 households away.
Mary was on the 1870 census in Logan with her son Comfort.
Mary was with her son Bird Hensley in 1880, just a few houses from son Comfort Hensley. She was listed as a widow on this record.
I don't know when Mary died, though it was obviously after 1880. |

Children of Mary "Polly" Hensley.
The 1840 through 1880 census records shows four children. The oldest,
an apparent daughter has not been identified yet. The marriage record
of her daughter Elizabeth showed parents as "John Blair" and "Polly
Hensley." If accurate, then John Blair was the father of at least on
of Mary's children. He was born ca 1797/98 per his age on the 1850
census (52). I don't know if he is the father of any of the other
children.
