Elijah Hensley was born ca 1793/94 per his ages on the 1850 census (56) and 1860 census (66). Both of those census records show he was born in Virginia somewhere, as does the 1870 census. However, on his 1869 marriage record, Elijah lists his birth place as Hawkins Co., TN. Hawkins bordered Washington Co., VA so perhaps he was born in the border region or perhaps the census records are just wrong about him being born in Virginia.

I don't know who his parents are, but he seems to be connected to the other Hensleys in Logan Co., WV. If so, he was probably from Tazewell Co., VA originally as most of them were. They all may be children of the widow Catherine Hensley. On the other hand if he was really born in Hawkins Co., TN he may be a child of one of the early Hensleys in Hawkins. They include: Robert Hensley (1760), Temple Hensley (1760/70), Trent Hensley (1770/80) and Edmund Hensley (1770/80). Their connection to the Logan Co., WV Hensleys are unknown, but they could be closely related. It could be a coincidence that Elijah wound up with those other Hensleys in Logan and vicinity, though in this case that is unlikely.

Elijah was in Floyd Co., KY by 25 Oct 1818 for on that date he married Mary "Polly" Gidden there. The marriage bond (dated 22 Oct 1818) showed Reuben Gidden as bondsman. He is probably her father or brother.

They are on the 1820 census in Floyd Co., KY. They are listed next to Reuben Giddens (1775/94), possibly her father. James Hensley (1770s) is just a few houses away.

Pike County was formed in 1821/22 from Floyd, and Elijah fell into the new county. He is listed there on several tax lists in the 1820's through 1829. I don't have these records yet.

They are still there for the 1830 census. Pyrrhus McGinnis (married widow of Stephen Hensley) was just a few houses away.

By 1833 Elijah was in Logan Co., VA (now WV) and was listed on the tax list there that year. He was taxed for one male over 16 (himself), and one horse. He was also listed there in 1835, now with three horses. In 1837 he was listed again in Logan with three horses.

Elijah is listed on the 1840 census in Logan Co., VA. The enumerations aren't a perfect match for the known children.

Elijah Hensley is listed on the 1843 tax list in Logan Co., VA with two males over 16 (himself and a son presumably), no slaves, four horses.

Mary Gidden Hensley died sometime in the 1840's, presumably in Logan Co., VA (now WV). After her death, Elijah married Mahala (---) at some point in the 1840's. She was born ca 1815/16 in Virginia. I don't know her maiden name.

They are listed on the 1850 census in Logan, next door to Mary Hensley Davis, Elijah's probable sister.

Elijah Hensley married Mary McMillan on 8 Aug 1869 in neighboring Pike Co., KY. She was born ca 1824/25 in Virginia. I don't know who her parents are. The marriage record showed that Elijah was born in Hawkins Co., TN and Mary in Pike Co., KY. It was his 3rd marriage and her 2nd (as stated on the record). If this was her 2nd marriage, then McMillan probably was her late husband's surname. I don't know what her maiden name was.

They are on the 1870 census in Logan Co., WV. I suspect the two youngest children are either grandchildren, or perhaps Mary's from a previous marriage. Sister Mary Hensley Davis is a few houses away.

I wasn't able to find Elijah Hensley on the 1880 census. He probably died before then.

I wasn't able to find Mary in 1880 either. She may have died too, or perhaps remarried someone not yet identified.
