| Stephen Hensley was born ca 1815/16 per his age on
the 1850 census (34). He was born in Virginia per the same source.
I don't know who his parents are yet. There is another Stephen in the area, Stephen M. Hensley (c1819) son of Stephen Hensley and Nancy Farley. That is not the same person, but there could be confusion between them. Fortunately the other one used his middle initial on most records. This Stephen (c1816) is related to them for certain. He named one of his sons "Pyrrhus" which must be in honor of Nancy Farley Hensley's 2nd husband Pyrrhus McGinnis. If not, it is an interesting coincidence. It seems very likely that Stephen is a brother to George Hensley (c1814) as they were neighbors over the years, and both seemed to name a son after the other. Stephen would have been about 14 years old by the time of the 1830 census. (I skip analysis of the 1820 census since there was no Logan County yet at that point.) None of the Hensley households in Logan included an apparent son in that age group or even close. Daniel Hensley (c1774) in nearby Lawrence Co., KY had one boy aged 10-14. Robert Hensley (c1777) is missing in 1830 as is John Hensley (1775/94). Those three are all possible parents for Stephen Hensley. Stephen would have been about 24 for the 1840 census, old enough to be on his own. I didn't find him listed on the 1840 census anywhere. Stephen Hensley is listed on the 1843 tax list in Logan Co., VA (now WV). He had one male over 16 (himself), no blacks and no horses. Stephen Hensley married Mary "Polly" Runyon between 1840 and ca 1846, presumably in Logan Co., VA. She was born ca 1824/25 in Virginia (both per her 1850 census entry). I don't know who her parents are. Her maiden name is proven by birth records of her children in Logan County. They are listed on the 1850 census in Logan next door to Daniel Hensley (c1806).

They are on the 1870 census in Logan just three houses from George Hensley (c1814).
They are on the 1880 census in Logan next door to George Hensley (c1814).
I don't know when Stephen or Mary died, though it was obviously after 1880. |
