I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grand Nephew of Ambrose Edwards.

Ambrose Edwards was born ca 1784/90 based on census analysis. His only census entry (that I know of) shows him in 1810 as age 16-25, or born ca 1784/94. Combining this with the compatible children in John Edwards' household in 1790 and 1800, I figure he must be born ca 1784/90. He was born in Wayne County, North Carolina.

Ambrose Edwards a proven child of John Edwards, and was named in his father's Will of 1810.

Ambrose was apparently home with his parents for the 1790 census, listed in the "under 16" age group (born ca 1774/90).

Ambrose seems to have been home with John Edwards for the 1800 census, aged 10-15 (born ca 1784/90).

Ambrose Edwards married someone in the 1800-1810 period. I have not yet found a record of his wife's name.

Ambrose was listed on the 1810 census in Wayne County. He was listed in the midst of several Edwards, namely his brothers Sampson Edwards, David Edwards, James Edwards and Isom Edwards, and nephew Stephen Edwards.  He was listed between Stephen and David.

1810 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1810 Wayne Co, NC pg 808 Ambros Edwards 00100-00010-0-1
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 16-25 (1784-1794)	Ambros EDWARDS (1784/90) s/o John
1 Female(s) 26-44 (1765-1784)	Wife? (1765/84)

On 5 Mar 1810, John Edwards (his father) deeded property to Ambrus Edwards. I don't have the details of this deed yet. Witnesses were John Thompson and John Cox. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 10 page 96).

Ambrose's father John Edwards made his Will on 1 Aug 1810 in Wayne County, and named "my son Ambrus Edwards" and left him Fifty dollars.

On 25 Dec 1811, Major Searles of Duplin County sold property in Duplin County on Lewis Branch to Ambrose Edwards of Wayne County. Witnessed by Stephen Edwards (Ambrose's nephew). (Duplin Co, NC Deed Book T page 253).

On 16 Apr 1812, Ambrus Edwards of Wayne County sold property to John Cox. I don't have the details of this deed. It was witnessed by James Everitt and Ann Everitt. (Wayne Co, NC Deed Book 10 page 117).

On 6 Jul 1812, Ambrose Edwards of Duplin Co, NC sold his Lewis Branch land to Basil Kornegay. This deed would indicate that Ambrose moved into Duplin County sometime between April and July of 1812. Duplin County was just a few miles south of where they had lived in Wayne County, but I don't know precisely where Lewis Branch is located. This deed is also the last record I've found for Ambrose in Duplin or Wayne County, except for two court records that mention him, but does not indicate he was still living there (see below). (Duplin Co, NC Deed Book 5A page 480).

On 19 Oct 1814, Ambrose Edwards was mentioned in Duplin County Court on the list of Insolvents for 1812 (those who didn't or couldn't pay their taxes). This may indicate that he had moved away still owing taxes for a portion of the year, for he did seem to be gone from Duplin County by this time. (From Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Abstracts of Minutes 1814-1816 Part 10 by Joyce Jones Franks, 1995)

Ambrose was mentioned again on 18 Jan 1816, when his deed to Basil Kornegay was proven in Court by George Duncan. (From Duplin County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Abstracts of Minutes 1814-1816 Part 10 by Joyce Jones Franks, 1995)

I have not found a primary record for Ambrose Edwards more recent than his 1812 deed selling out his Duplin County land. I would assume he moved away from the area or possibly died around then.

Working on the assumption that he moved away, I did find a few Ambrose Edwards's in census records in other states, but without further research, I don't know how to be sure if any of them could be this same Ambrose Edwards.

In 1820, I found an Ambrose Edwards in Garrard County, Kentucky, but I doubt he is the same one, for he seems to have been there back in 1810 also (when ours was in Wayne Co, NC that year). There was also an Ambrose in Greene Co, GA that year. He seems like a good match, but I couldn't say if he is the same Ambrose or not.

There was an Ambrose Edwards who made his Will in Jones Co, GA on 24 Feb 1823 naming children: John Edwards, Elizabeth Bowen, Charity Campbell, Nancy Lewis, William Edwards with son John being the Executor. It seems very unlikely that this is the same Ambrose Edwards for one big reason: Our Ambrose had no children as of 1810, so there is no way he could have adult and married kids just 13 years later.

In 1830 I found an Ambrose Edwards in Talbot Co, GA. No idea if he is the same one though.

In 1840 I found an Ambrose in Russell Co, AL and one in Coles Co, IL.

In 1850 I found a few, but none of them could be the same person due to their ages (all were too young).

Children

I don't know if Ambrose Edwards and wife had any children, but if so, they were all born after 1810.
