Special thanks to Judith Gray Ginn and Lauri Ivey for data shared on this family.

The author (Marty Grant) is not related to Catherine Grant as far as can be determined.

Catherine Grant was born ca 1810/11, presumably in Wayne Co, NC. At a glance, she appears to be a widow in the 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 census, but records show she was a single mother instead. She resided in New Hope District of Wayne Co, NC where most of the other Grants lived.  In 1850 she was only two houses from Susan Grant, widow of Elisha Grant. Catherine could easily be a daughter of Elisha and Susan, but this is not proven.

For the 1820 census, Catherine would have been about 9 years old, so she should be in the under 10 age category. There were a few Grants in Wayne County on that census who had at least one apparent daughter that age: Elisha Grant (1754), Ephraim Grant (1773), Jesse Grant (1787), and Thomas Grant (1784/90). Based only on this census, any of these four could be Catherine's father. More on this later.

Catherine had her first child out of wedlock in the 1820's. Wayne County court records (1857-1860) show that all of Catherine's children were fathered by Benjamin Best. He was born ca 1766/67 in North Carolina (per 1850 census).

Catherine Grant was listed as head of household in Wayne Co, NC for the 1830 census. This census was in alpha order, so we can't tell who her neighbors were, but each list was only alpha within its own district. She was listed in Whitfields district, which is the same as New Hope District. Most of the Wayne Co, NC Grant families were in that district. (Benjamin Best wasn't in the same district, but not too far away.)

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1830 Wayne County, NC pg 510 Catherine Grant 0000000000000-1000100000000
Analysis:
1 Female(s) 20-29 (1800-1810)	Catherine GRANT (1810/11) d/o ?
1 Female(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)	Daughter? (1825/30)

Using the 1830 census for analysis purposes, I looked for the Grants of 1820 who had a daughter Catherine's age (see above). If she was with one of those in 1820, then in 1830 they would have one less daughter that age. Of those, Elisha Grant (1754) had died (earlier in 1830). His widow Susan was listed in 1830 with one girl in the comparable age group. They had two back in 1820 so this fits for Elisha being Catherine's father. Ephraim Grant (1773) was the very same situation, two matches in 1820, only one in 1830, so he is still a suspect. Jesse Grant (1787) very same situation, and Thomas Grant (1784/90) had two back in 1820, but none in 1830. This census analysis shows that all four men are good candidates to be Catherine's father.

Ephraim Grant left a Will in 1860 naming eight children, and Catherine wasn't one of them. I would say that removes him from consideration, though of course he may have left her out for some reason. The other three are well qualified to be Catherine's dad. I have no further information that would make any of them stand out over the rest.

Catherine appears on the 1840 census as "Katy Grant" (looks like "Haty" Grant at a glance). She is in New Hope District, and is listed between William Hinson and Matthew Smith. Winny Mozingo (see Thomas Grant) is is only six houses away. Benjamin Best was in a different district.

Catherine was listed on the 1850 census in Wayne Co, NC in the District North of the Neuse River, in the household of Benjamin Best, age 83 (born ca 1766/67). Benjamin Best deeded property to Benjamin and Hinton Grant in 1846. They were two houses from Susan Grant in 1850.

A Court Case dated 1857 in Wayne County shows that the children of Caty Grant were fathered by Benjamin Best.

Catherine was still in Wayne Co, NC for the 1860 census. She was in New Hope District, and all of her children from 1850 were gone, but she had one new child (or grandchild) with her named Catherine Grant, age 8. They were listed next door to Winny Mozingo in 1860 (see Thomas Grant).

New Hope District presumably covers the same territory as modern New Hope Township. This is the area east of Goldsboro with the Neuse River as its southern border all the way East to the Lenoir County line and for a northern border it may be West Bear Creek. The western border is the town of Goldsboro. That is a large area, and without consulting deeds and other records I can't narrow it down any better. I will check out Grant family deeds eventually to narrow down where these folks lived.

I was unable to find Catherine on the 1870 census. Lauri Ivey found her that year with son-in-law Robert Ham, though her surname was not listed, making it appear that she was a Ham instead, but it is most likely her.

In 1880 she was in Wayne County with the Bedford family (her daughter).

I don't know when Catherine died, nor where she was buried.

Children of Catherine Grant

Catherine Grant had at least seven children as proven by the 1857 court case, and the 1850 through 1880 census. One child (Susan) was with her in 1850, but not mentioned in 1857, so probably died before then.
