Enoch Hensley (c1786) and Amy Hastings of Caswell and Rockingham Co, NC and Franklin, Hall, and Carroll Co, GA and Saline Co, AR

This family also used the "Henslee" spelling just as often as the "Hensley" spelling.

Enoch Hensley was born ca 1785/86 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina (per 1850 ). He was undoubtedly born in Caswell County.

It seems very likely that Enoch was a son of David Hensley (1755/65) and Mary Payne, but I don't have solid proof for that, but Enoch did follow David through several counties and two states, and David did have an apparent son his age.

Enoch Hensley would have been about 1 year old or less for the 1786 state census of Caswell County, NC, so if he was born yet by the time of the census takers visit, he should be enumerated in the "under 21" age category (born ca 1765/86). In Caswell County, only David Hensley (1755/65) and John Hensley (bef 1755) his brother, had apparent sons in that age group. Of these two, David is the more likely choice.

By the 1790 census, Enoch would have been about 4 years old, so he should be enumerated in the "under 16" age group (born ca 1774/1790), but the point is moot, for this census is lost for Caswell County.

By the 1800 census, Enoch would have been about 14 years old, so he should be enumerated in the age 10-15 category (born ca 1784/90). In Caswell County, David Hensley (1755/65) had three apparent sons this age, and he was the only one there that year who did.

On 22 Mar 1805 Enoch Henslee witnessed a deed from Thomas Harrel (or Harrelson) of Caswell to David Henslee of same. Phillip Walton also witnessed. (Caswell Co, NC Deed Book O page 84 shared by Laura Schreibman).

On 4 Nov 1805 Enoch Henslee and William Wilkerson were bondsmen for marriage of Isaac George and Frankey Henslee (perhaps a sister?) in Caswell County, NC.

On 27 Oct 1806, Enoch Henslee obtained a marriage bond in Caswell County, North Carolina to marry Amy Hasten (or Hastings, or Houston). James Mitchell was bondsman. They probably married that day or within a few days afterwards. Amy was born ca 1786/87 (per 1850 Census Mortality Schedule) in Virginia (also per 1850 census). I don't know who her parents were, nor if her name is actually "Houston" or "Hasten". There were both in Caswell County at the time. ("Hasten" being Hastings, or something similar). A James Hastings was just a few houses from David Hensley in 1800, as was a Zachariah Harton, which I suppose is "Horton", another possible surname for Amy. Harton did have an apparent daughter Amy's age with him in 1800. I'm not saying he is her father, but it is possible. Cindy Stamps states that Amy's name should be Hasten or Hastings, so I'll go with that. She says this is proven by her father's 1828 Caswell County Will naming Amy Henslee as a daughter.

By 1810, Enoch (and his parents) had moved to neighboring Rockingham County, North Carolina and were listed there on the census. Enoch was listed between James Martin and William Pirkle and just 17 houses from David Hensley (1755/65).

By 1818, Enoch and several of his relatives had moved to Franklin County, Georgia. He was listed there on the 1818 tax list as was his father David Hensley, and also David S. Hensley (1790/1800) (his brother).

In 1818, Enoch Henslee of Franklin Co, GA was deeded land by the Heirs of Samuel Hollingsworth, deceased, being 166 acres in Franklin County on Grove Fork of Broad River, adjoining David Henslee. Witnessed by Benjamin Henslee. (Don't know who this Benjamin is). (shared by Laura Schreibman).

Enock Henslee was listed on the 1819 tax list in Franklin County, Georgia taxed for 175 acres bordering D. Henslee on Grove River. His father David and brother David S. Henslee were both listed also. Enoch Hensley was listed on the 1820 tax list in Franklin County, Georgia taxed for 175 acres bordering D. Henslee on Grove River. His father David and brother David S. Henslee were both listed also. Enoch would have probably been listed on the 1820 census in Franklin County, but unfortunately, this census was lost.

Enoch Henslee drew land in the 1820 Georgia Land Lottery and won Lot # 237 in District 10 in Early County, Georgia (as did his brother David S. Henslee). Early County had been formed in 1818 from Creek Indian land, but was not organized until 1821. I don't know if Enoch or David S. Hensley ever moved there.

Enoch Hensley was listed on the 1821 tax list in Franklin County, Georgia taxed for 175 acres bordering D. Henslee on Grove River, and also for 250 acres in Early County. His father David was no longer listed by 1821, but brother David S. Henslee was still there, as was younger brother William Hensley (c1800). The 1822 Franklin tax list does not show Enoch, so he may have moved into neighboring Hall County by then.

He was in Hall County by 1823 for he was listed in the Court Minutes as having registered that year for selling spirituous liquor. ("The History of Hall County, Georgia Vol. I 1818-1900" by James E.Dorsey, shared by Laura Schreibman).

Enoch Hensley was listed on the 1830 census in Hall County, Georgia, the only Hensley there that year. He was listed next to James Carter and Vincent Hulsey.

Enoch Hensley joined his son Mackfield Hensley in Carroll County, Georgia during the 1830's.

Between ca 1844 and ca 1846, Enoch and his son Mackfield and brother William left Georgia for Saline County, Arkansas.

Amy Hastings Hensley died in January 1850 in Saline County, Arkansas as reported on the 1850 Census Mortality Schedule. She was listed as "Horton Hensley" (this census taker had the strange, but helpful habit of listing some women by their maiden name and not their given name), she was listed as age 63, born in Virginia, and having died of Dropsy.

Enoch was listed as head of household for the 1850 census, with son James and his family living with him. Son David P. Hensley was three houses away.

There were several court cases recorded in Saline County in 1851, 1852 and 1853 with Enoch Hensley making suit against his son Mackfield Hensley for trespassing (probably meaning a property line dispute). The last record was 21 Oct 1853 where the case was dismissed after they apparently settled it among themselves. (Thanks to Laura Schreibman for sharing this).

The record above is the last I have for Enoch. He was not listed on the 1860 census in Saline Co, AR, nor in Johnson Co, TX with son Mackfield. I suspect he died between 1853 and 1860.

Children

Enoch Hensley and Amy Hastings had numerous children per the various census records. I don't have solid proof of any of them, except son James who was with Enoch in 1850, however, I'm reasonably sure who several of his sons were but am lacking concrete proof.

Unknown Son (1800/10). Enoch Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1810 (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10). I don't have the 1820 census listing for this family, but this son was gone by 1830, so probably married or dead by then.

It is possible that this is James M. Hensley (c1809) who was near Miles D. Hensley in 1850 Carroll County, Georgia.

I am quite sure that this is Mackfield Hensley (1809/10), but I only have circumstantial evidence connecting them. They were related without doubt, and often lived in the same places and were neighbors.

This may be William Hensley (c1815) who was in Carroll Co, GA in 1850. He named one of his sons "Enoch" and since his age is right, he makes a good suspect.

There was an "A. Hainesley" in 1850 Carroll Co, GA age 30 (born ca 1819/20), born in GA. This could be the same person. I don't know what his given name is though. More data is needed.

Unknown Son (1820/25). Enoch Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was home in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and still home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25), but gone by 1850, so probably married or dead by then.

Unknown Daughter (1820/25). Enoch Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1830 (age 5-9, born ca 1820/25), and still home in 1840 (age 15-19, born ca 1820/25), but gone by 1850, so probably married or dead by then.

James Hensley was born ca 1825/26 (per 1850 census) in Georgia (per 1850 census), probably in Hall County. He was apparently home with his parents in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30).

James Hensley married Julia Ann --- before ca 1849 in Saline Co, AR. She was born ca 1828/29 in Georgia. I don't know her maiden name.

They were on the 1850 census with his widowed father (see his section above for a transcript of this census).

Unknown Daughter (1825/30). Enoch Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in 1830 (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), but gone by 1850, so probably married or dead by then.
