I (Marty Grant) am not related to Mackfield Hensley as far as I know.

Special thanks to Cindy Stamps for data shared on this family.

Mackfield Hensley was born ca 1809/10 (per 1850 census) in North Carolina (per 1850 ). He was undoubtedly born in either Caswell or Rockingham County, North Carolina, though I don't know which for sure.

I don't know who Mackfield Hensley's parents are for sure, but for several years I have had Mackfield (1810) listed as a son of David Hensley and Mary Payne, but I don't have solid proof for that, in fact, I think it is wrong. My current theory is that he is a son of Enoch Hensley (c1786) and Amy Houston, but that is based only on circumstantial evidence.

Certain assumptions can be made though that I feel are quite accurate: One, Mackfield (c1810) is very likely a grandson (or great grandson) of Mackfield Hensley and Martha Sneed of Caswell Co, NC. Two, Mackfield (c1810) is a brother to Miles D. Hensley (1813), since Mackfield named one of his sons "Miles" and Miles named one of his "Mackfield", and they all lived in Carroll Co, GA together. Three, Mackfield is closely related to Enoch Hensley (c1786), since he named one of his sons "Enoch". This may be evidence that Enoch is actually his father, instead of David, but I don't know for sure, and Four, Mackfield is closely related to the other Hensleys of Carroll Co, GA and Saline Co, AR.

Mackfield would have been about 1 year old, or less for the 1810 census, so if he was born yet by the time of the census takers visit, he should be enumerated in the "under 10" age category (born ca 1800/10). In North Carolina, there were lots of Hensleys in the western part of the state (Burke and Buncombe Counties), but it isn't likely he is part of that family. There were Hensleys in Caswell County, including one who had apparent children in the correct age group: Mackfield Hensley (1770/75), however, I'm not sure either of this Mackfield's two sons (of 1810) were this younger Mackfield (c1810) (but could be wrong about that). Richard Henslee (c1775) of Orange County had 2 sons in this age group, neither of whom are identified (he was a grandson of old Mackfield). In 1810 Rockingham County, there was David Hensley, but he had no sons "under 10". However, Enoch Hensley (c1786)  had two apparent sons that age. So the 1810 census gives us three suspects for parents of Mackfield (c1810), and they are: Mackfield (1770/75), Richard (c1775) and Enoch (c1786), but this is based on the assumption that Mackfield was already born when the census taker came around. He might have been born afterwards, later on in the year.

Mackfield Hensley would have been about 10 years old by 1820, so if listed on that census he would have been in the age 10-15 category (born ca 1804/10). All of those suspects from 1810 had moved to Georgia by this time, except for Mackfield (1770/75), and Richard who was still in Orange County, NC. He still had two sons in the right age group to be Mackfield, but for various reasons, I don't think Richard is Mackfield's father.  The elder Mackfield still in Caswell had two sons in the right age group, but I don't think they are Mackfield (c1810) either. Now David Hensley (1755/65) was in Emmanuel Co, GA in 1820, and he had no sons in the right age group. Unfortunately, much of the 1820 census of Georgia is missing, so we can't see every Hensley who was there in 1820. Enoch Hensley (c1786) was in Franklin Co, GA as of the 1818 tax list, so probably was there in 1820 as well, but that census is lost.

Assuming that Mackfield Hensley was somewhere in Eastern Georgia in 1820 (perhaps with Enoch in Franklin County), then he moved all the way across the state in the 1820's to Carroll County, Georgia, which was opened up in 1826 from former Creek Indian territory.

Mackfield Hensley married Mary Blackwell (per Cindy Stamps) in the 1820-1830 timeframe, somewhere in Georgia. I suspect they married in Carroll County, but it could be somewhere else. Mary was born ca 1800/10 (per 1830 census) or ca 1810/20 (per 1840 census). These can be reconciled if she was born ca 1810.

Mackfield was listed on the 1830 census in Carroll County, Georgia. Another Hensley was there also, but not listed nearby: Thomas Hensley (1761-1834), a Revolutionary War Pensioner, formerly of Chatham County, NC. There is no known relationship between the Chatham and Caswell County Hensley families. Mackfield was listed between Moses Morris and Jesse Blackwell.

Apparently Mackfield let all of his kinfolks know how great Carroll County was, for by 1840 he had been joined there by several apparent relatives, whom I believe are his parents and siblings.

For the 1840 census, Mackfield was still in Carroll County. He was listed next door to Josiah Hensley (1810/20) (brother?), and just a few houses from his possible father Enoch Hensley (c1786), and just a page away from possible brother Miles Hensley (1813).

Between ca 1844 and ca 1846, Mackfield and several of his kinsmen left Georgia for Saline County, Arkansas.

Mary Blackwell Hensley died sometime around ca 1846 in Saline Co, AR.

Mackfield Hensley married Elvira --- ca 1847 (per 1850 census, actually listed marriage year). Elvira was born ca 1824/25 in Tennessee. Cindy Stamps gives Elvira's maiden name as Lorentz (or Lawrence).

Mackfield and family were listed on the 1850 census in Saline Co, AR, but not near the several other Hensleys there, including his possible father Enoch Hensley (c1786) who was there that year.

Mackfield and family moved to Texas between ca 1852 and ca 1854. Cindy Stamps states that the lived in other places in the 1850's also, that they went first to Collin County, Texas, then to Johnson County, then to Hood County.

Elvira Hensley died sometime between 1857 and 1860 in Hood or Johnson County, Texas.

Mackfield and children were listed on the 1860 census in Johnson County. No township was given, but their Post Office was Comanche Peak. Mackfield's son Miles Hensley was next door with his own family.

I don't have them on the 1870 census, nor did I find them in 1880, at least not in Texas. I found some of Mackfield's children in Burleson County and Collin County, Texas in 1880.

Cindy Stamps shared that Mackfield married 3rd to Phoebe Campbell in 1860 and they had 8 children together.

Cindy also reports that Mackfield died in July 1887 and is buried in Kimble County, Texas.

Children

Mackfield Hensley and his first wife had 8 children per the various census records. Mackfield and 2nd wife Elvira had at least 5 children.

Unknown Son (1825/30)

Unknown Daughter (1825/30)

Enoch Hensley (c1833)

Jesse Hensley (c1838)

Miles Hensley (c1840)

Amanda Hensley (c1842)

Samantha Hensley (c1844)

Elizabeth Hensley (c1846)

Martha Hensley (c1848)

Mackfield Hensley (c1849)

John Hensley (c1852)

Eliza Hensley (c1854)

Martin Hensley (c1857)

Unknown Son (1825/30). Mackfield Hensley had an apparent son this age. He was home in the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), but gone by 1840, so I suspect he had died by then as that was too young for him to be married and off on his own. He could just have gone to live with someone else by 1840 though, perhaps as a hired laborer or something.

Unknown Daughter (1825/30). Mackfield Hensley had an apparent daughter this age. She was home in the 1830 census (age "under 5", born ca 1825/30), and still home in 1840 (age 10-14, born ca 1825/30), but gone by 1850, so probably married or dead by then.

Cindy Stamps shows this daughter as Nancy Henslee born 1829, died Jack Co, TX. married to J. C. Cornelius. This must be the same couple who married on 27 Aug 1846 in Hot Springs County, Arkansas: "Nancy Hensley" and "Jackson Cornelius". I have no further data on them.

Enoch Hensley was born ca 1832/33 (per 1850 census) in Carroll County, Georgia. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age 5-9, born ca 1830/35), and still home in 1850 ("Enoch" age 17, born GA).

There was another Enoch who also went to Johnson County, Texas with the rest of the family in the 1850's. He was listed on the 1860 census in Johnston County with another family, but Cindy Stamps tells me this Enoch (in Johnson in 1860) is son of John P. Henslee (Uncle of Mackfield).

Enoch Hensley married Sarah J. --- sometime before ca 1853 (based on ages of children with him in 1880), presumably in Johnson County, Texas. Sarah was born ca 1832/33 in Georgia. Cindy Stamps gives her maiden name as "Hudson".

I don't have them in 1860 yet.

I don't have them in 1870, but by 1880 they were several counties south in Burleson County, Texas. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Jesse Hensley was born ca 1837/38 (per 1850 census) in Carroll County, Georgia. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1840 census (age "under 5", born ca 1835/40), and still home in 1850 ("Jesse" age 12, born GA).

Jesse apparently also went to Johnson County, Texas with the rest of the family in the 1850's.

Sometime in this timeframe (before ca 1858), Jesse Hensley married Martha E. Cosper either in Johnson County, or in neighboring Erath County where they were living later. Martha was born ca 1840/41 in Georgia (per 1860 census) or Alabama (per 1880 census). Her maiden name is based on her sister living with them in 1880, who was a "Cosper", and single.

For the 1860 census, Jesse and family were in Erath County, Texas, which is next to Johnson County where his parents were.

I don't have them in 1870 yet, but by 1880 they were in Collin County, Texas which is a few counties north east of Erath County. They were very close to brother Miles Hensley. ** I don't have this entry typed up yet.

Miles Hensley was born ca 1839/40 (per 1850 census) in Carroll County, Georgia. He did not seem to be home with his parents for the 1840 census, so probably born after the census taker came around. He was home in 1850 ("Miles" age 10, born GA).

Miles apparently also went to Johnson County, Texas with the rest of the family in the 1850's.

Sometime before ca 1858, Miles married Amanda --- in Johnson Co, TX. Amanda was born ca 1842/43 in Alabama. I don't know her maiden name.

They were listed on the 1860 census next door to Miles' parents.

Amanda Hensley was born ca 1841/42 (per 1850 census) in Carroll County, Georgia. She was home with her parents in 1850 ("Amanda" age 8, born GA).  She was not home in 1860, so probably married or dead by then.

Samantha Hensley was born ca 1843/44 (per 1850 census) in Carroll County, Georgia. She was home with her parents in 1850 ("Amanda" age 8, born GA) and still home in 1860 ("Sumantha" age 16, born GA).

Elizabeth Hensley was born ca 1845/46 (per 1850 census) in Saline County, Arkansas. She was home with her parents in 1850 ("Elisabeth" age 4, born AR) and still home in 1860 ("Elizabeth" age 14, born AR).

Martha Hensley was born ca 1847/48 (per 1850 census) in Saline County, Arkansas. She was home with her parents in 1850 ("Martha" age 2, born AR) and still home in 1860 ("Martha" age 12, born AR).

Mackfield Hensley was born ca 1848/49 (per 1850 census) in Saline County, Arkansas. He was home with parents in 1850 ("Macfield" age 1, born AR) and still home in 1860 ("Maxfield" age 10, born AR). I have no record of him after that.

John Hensley was born ca 1851/52 (per 1860 census) in Saline County, Arkansas. He was home with parents in 1860 ("John" age 8, born AR). I have no record of him after that.
