Daniel Johnson (c1789) and Edith Strickland and Anny Hucks of Horry Co, SC

Special thanks to Jim Strickland for sharing data about Daniel's first wife Edith Strickland.

This family resided in the section of Horry County later known as Bayboro Township.

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson".

Daniel Johnson was born ca 1788/89 (per 1850 census) in South Carolina, presumably in that part of old Georgetown District that is now Horry County.

I don't know who Daniel's parents were. There are numerous suspects. Their may be some evidence regarding his parentage somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet.

Assuming that he was born in what is now Horry, then he was probably with his parents for the 1790 census. There were way too many Johnson's in 1790 Georgetown District to narrow down which of them might have been Daniel's parents.

For the 1800 census, in Georgetown District, Waccamaw County (which is present Horry County), there were several Johnson households, but only one with a child about Daniel's age. He would have been about 11 years old or so. He should be listed in the 10-15 age group (born ca 1784/90). Joseph Johnson had a son in that age group (but it wasn't Daniel).

In 1810, Daniel would have been about 21 years old, so should be enumerated in the age 16-25 category (born ca 1784/94). Several of the Horry District Johnston families had a male this age with them. They were Joshua Johnson, "Widow Johnston Sr", Joseph Johnston, James Johnston and "widow Johnston".

According to data found by Jim Strickland, Daniel Johnson married Edith Strickland in Horry County between 1810 and ca 1819. This marriage is proven by a deed dated 6 Oct 1828 in which various heirs of William Strickland relinquish rights to certain land. This record names "Daniel Johnson and Edith his wife" as heirs of William Strickland. (Horry Co, SC Deed Book L, page 191, thanks to Jim Strickland for sharing this with me)

Edith Strickland Johnson died sometime between 1828 and ca 1832 in Horry Dist, SC.

Daniel Johnson married Anny Hucks sometime ca 1830/32 in Horry Dist, SC. She was born ca 1809/10 in SC, presumably in Horry District. I don't know who her parents were. Her maiden name is proven by her War of 1812 Widow's Pension Application (thanks to Jan Derrick for sharing that info.)

Daniel Johnson was listed on the 1830 census in Horry Dist, SC. ** Unfortunately, I don't yet have the 1830 enumerations.

Daniel Johnson was listed on the 1840 census in Horry Dist, SC. He wasn't particularly close to any other Johnson families then.

"Daniel Johnson" was listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list and taxed for 1,227 acres. (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages)

Daniel and family were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC. He was next door to Phillip Johnson (c1795), perhaps a brother.

Daniel and family were listed on the 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC. They were next door Allen Johnson, son of Phillip Johnson. Several of their own married children were also nearby.

Anny and children were still in Horry for the 1870 census, listed in Bayboro Township. They were about 20 pages from Matthew Johnson (c1797), possible brother of Daniel.

Anny and daughter Havalah were listed on the 1880 census in Horry, in Gallivants Ferry Township.

Children

Daniel and Edith had at least one child, possibly two. Daniel and Anna had at least eight children per the 1850 through 1870 census. Their may be others also per earlier census records.

Fairby Johnson was born 18 Aug 1819 (per Jim Strickland, and confirmed by tombstone) in Horry Dist, SC. She is a daughter of Daniel and his first wife Edith Strickland. I'm not sure what the proof is for her being Daniel's child, but he did sell her a sizeable piece of land in 1851 for only $10. (Horry Co, SC Deed Book P, page 518, shared with me by Jim Strickland).

Fairby was apparently with her parents for the 1820 census, listed in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). ** I don't know if she was with her father for the 1830 census (don't have that enumeration yet). She was not with him in 1840.

She married Daniel William "Duke" Alford before ca 1836 in Horry Dist, SC. He was born ca 1814/15 in SC, presumably Horry District.

In 1850, they were in Horry next door to Phillip Johnson (c1795) and just two houses from her parents.

Unknown Daughter (1830/35). Daniel Johnson had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1840. She was gone by 1850, so probably had married or was dead by then.

William L. Johnson was born ca 1831/32 in Horry Dist, SC. He was seemingly home with his parents for the 1840 census, and he was with them for sure in 1850.

William L. Johnson married Elizabeth --- ca 1858 or so in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name. She was born ca 1834/35 in SC, presumably Horry District.

They were listed on the 1860 census next door to his parents and next to his brother Henry.

William married again ca 1865 or thereabouts to Rebecca ---. I don't know her maiden name. She was born ca 1847/48 in SC, presumably in Horry.

William and Rebecca and family were on the 1870 census in Horry County, in Gallivants Ferry Township. They were two houses from his brother Daniel Green Johnson.

They were in Gallivants Ferry Township for the 1880 census, listed next door to brother Daniel G. Johnson.

Susannah Johnson was born ca 1833/34 in Horry Dist, SC. She was seemingly home with her parents for the 1840 census, and she was with them for sure in 1850. She was also still at home in 1860 and 1870.

She seemed to have a child out of wedlock in 1863. This child (Margaret) was with her and her mother in 1870.

In 1880, Susannah was living with her now married daughter Margaret Johnson Skipper in Gallivants Ferry Township. The record shows she was her mother, and that she was single.

Henry L. W. Johnson was born 14 Jul 1835 (per tombstone) in Horry Dist, SC. He was seemingly home with his parents for the 1840 census, and he was with them for sure in 1850.

Henry married Eliza A. C. --- ca 1850/60 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name, but she was born 16 May 1840 (per tombstone) in SC, presumably in Horry.

Henry and Eliza were listed on the 1860 census next door to his brother William, and just two houses from his parents.

Henry and Eliza and family were in Gallivants Ferry Township for the 1870 census near various Johnson families, all probably related.

Eliza A. C. --- Johnson died on 1 Dec 1903, and Henry L. W. Johnson died on 31 May 1917. They are buried at Gethsemane Cemetery. (Online at Horry County Historical Society web pages)

Elizabeth Johnson was born ca 1837/38 in Horry Dist, SC. She was seemingly home with her parents for the 1840 census, and she was with them for sure in 1850.

She was not with her parents in 1860, so probably had married or was dead by then.

Havalah A. Johnson was born ca 1839/40 in Horry Dist, SC. She was seemingly home with her parents for the 1840 census, and she was with them for sure in 1850. She was also still at home in 1860 and 1870 and 1880.

She seemed to have a child out of wedlock born ca 1871 (James W. Johnson). In 1880, she was with her mother, and listed as "single", but a child was listed as "son of daughter", which means the child was probably Havalah's or one of her sisters (sister Susan had children out of wedlock).

Daniel Green Johnson was born ca 1841/42 (per 1850 census) or in "1844" (per tombstone) in Horry Dist, SC. He was with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

He married Jane W. Graham ca 1869/70 or thereabouts in Horry Co, SC. Her maiden name was shared with me by Jan Derrick. I don't know what the proof of that is. She was born 14 Aug 1847 (per tombstone) in Horry. I don't know who her parents are. There was a Jane Graham age 3 (c1846/47) in the 1850 census with Joseph B. and Sarah Graham. She was still with them in 1860, age 12 (c1847/48). I don't know if Joseph and Sarah are her parents, but they seem to be the only choice. I didn't find any other Jane Graham's close to her age.

Daniel and Jane were listed on the 1870 census in Horry Co, SC in Gallivants Ferry. They were next door to Mary, widow of Phillip Johnson (c1795) and just two houses from Daniel's brother William.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Gallivants Ferry Township next door to his brother William.

Jane W. Graham Johnson died on 17 Aug 1895, and Daniel Green Johnson died on 7 Nov 1896. They are buried at Gethsemane Cemetery. (Online at Horry County Historical Society web pages)

Basheba Vasilla M. Johnson was born ca 1843/44 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

John T. Johnson was born ca 1845/46 in Horry Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

I did not find John T. Johnson in 1870. He may have died in the 1860's (perhaps due to the Civil War). He may have moved away instead.
