I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to Phillip Johnson.

This family resided in the section of Horry County later known as Gallivants Ferry Township.

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson".

Phillip Johnson was born ca 1794/95 (per 1850 census) or ca 1798/99 (per 1860 census) in South Carolina, presumably in that part of old Georgetown District that is now Horry County.

I don't know who Phillip's parents were. There are numerous suspects. Their may be some evidence regarding his parentage somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet.

Assuming that he was born in what is now Horry, then he was probably with his parents for the 1800 census. In 1800 Georgetown District, Waccamaw County (which is present Horry County), there were several Johnson households, several with a child about his age. He would have been about 5 years old, so should be listed in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1790/1800). William, Gilbert, Penelope, James, and Joseph Johnson all had sons in this age group. Of these, neither William nor Joseph are likely to be his parents. They both left Wills, and did not mention Phillip.

In 1810, Phillip would have been about 15 years old, so should be enumerated in the age 10-15 category (born ca 1794/1800). Only two of the Horry District Johnston families had a male this age with them. They were Joshua and Joseph Johnston. This doesn't guarantee that one of these is his father, but it does make them prime suspects.

In 1820, Phillip Johnson would have been about 25 years old, so he should be listed in the age 16-25 age group (born ca 1794/1804).  Of the several Johnson's listed in 1820, only Joseph Johnson, and William Johnson had an apparent son Phillip's age. However, they are already accounted for. At this age though, Phillip could be living anywhere, with anyone.

Phillip Johnson married Mary A. --- sometime before 1825 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know what her maiden name is. She was born ca 1800/01 in SC, presumably in Horry.

Phillip Johnson was listed on the 1830 census in Horry Dist, SC. ** Unfortunately, I don't yet have the 1830 enumerations.

Phillip Johnson was listed on the 1840 census in Horry Dist, SC. He wasn't particularly close to any other Johnson families then. Matthew Johnson was on the previous page, and Allen Johnson was on the following page.

"Phillip Johnson" was listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list and taxed for 680 acres and 1 slave.  (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages)

Phillip and family were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC next door to Daniel Johnson (c1789), perhaps a brother.

Unknown Son (1810/20). Phillip Johnson had an apparent son this age with him in 1840 (** and I don't know if he was there in 1830). He was not home with Meshack in 1850, so had married, moved away or died by then.

It is possible that this wasn't a son, but a nephew or just someone else living with the family in 1840.

Allen T. Johnson was born 23 May 1825 (per tombstone) in Horry Dist, SC. ** He may have been with his parents in 1830. He did seem to be with them in 1840. He was with them for sure in 1850.

Allen T. Johnson married Alice C. --- ca 1850/53 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name. She was born 15 Mar 1823 (per tombstone).

They were listed on the 1860 census in Horry, next door to Daniel Johnson (c1789), and just two houses from Allen's parents.

Julian Johnson was born ca 1826/27 in Horry Dist, SC. ** She may have been with her parents in 1830. She did seem to be with them in 1840. She was with them for sure in 1850.

She was also home with parents in 1860 and 1870.

There were some younger children living with them also in 1870 (and 1860), who I suspect might be Julian's children, possibly born out of wedlock (if hers). If they aren't hers, I don't know who they belong to.

I did not find Julian on the 1880 census. One of her sons (Phillip) was residing with a Tyler family in Gallivants Ferry Township, listed as a "hireling".

Daniel S. Johnson was born ca 1828/29 in Horry Dist, SC. ** He may have been with his parents in 1830. He did seem to be with them in 1840. He was with them for sure in 1850.

Daniel S. Johnson married Susannah Amelia Johnson ca 1855 in Horry Dist, SC. She was apparently a daughter of Meshack Johnson (c1795), and possibly a first cousin of Daniel's.

They were listed on the 1860 census in Horry District.

Apparently, both Daniel and Susannah died in the 1860's, for on 6 Dec 1866, Meshack and Rebecca Johnson made a request to the Horry Court of Ordinary that their grandson Ebenezer S. Johnson be placed with Joseph J. Johnson as his guardian. The record stated that Ebenezer was a son of "Daniel S. Johnson" and "Amelia Johnson, late deceased ...". (Thanks to Lisa Gogan for sharing this record).

True to the above record, Ebenezer was living with Joseph J. Johnson (son of Meshack) in 1870.

Elizabeth Johnson was born ca 1830/31 in Horry Dist, SC. She seems to be with her parents in 1840. She was with them for sure in 1850.

She was gone by 1860, so probably had married or died by then.

Jane Johnson was born ca 1834/35 in Horry Dist, SC. She seems to be with her parents in 1840. She was with them for sure in 1850.

She was gone by 1860, so probably had married or died by then.

Mariah Johnson was born ca 1836/37 in Horry Dist, SC. She seems to be with her parents in 1840. She was with them for sure in 1850.

She was gone by 1860, so probably had married or died by then.

Phillip Johnson was born ca 1839/39 in Horry Dist, SC. He seems to be with his parents in 1840. He was with them for sure in 1850 and also in 1860.

I did not find Phillip in 1870, so he may have died in the 1860's (perhaps due to the Civil War), or moved away during that time frame.

Henry Lewis Johnson was born 18 Mar 1841 (per tombstone) in Horry Dist, SC. He was with his parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

Henry married Mantha I. --- ca 1860/63 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know what her maiden name was. She was born 8 Feb 1848 (per tombstone).

They were listed on the 1870 census just a few houses from the other Henry Johnson (1835) (son of Daniel Johnson) in Gallivants Ferry Township.

Henry Lewis Johnson died on 8 Apr 1920, and Mantha died on 20 Sep 1928. They are buried at the Methodist Rehobeth Cemetery. (Online at Horry County Historical Society web pages)

Annis Johnson was born ca 1842/43 in Horry Dist, SC. She was with her parents for the 1850 census.

She was gone by 1860, so probably had married or was dead by then.

Louisa C. Johnson was born ca 1844/45 in Horry Dist, SC. She was with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census.

Louisa C. Johnson married Solomon H. Sarvis ca 1865 in Horry Dist, SC. He was born ca 1836/37 in SC. I don't know who his parents were. I did not find him in in 1850 or 1860 in Horry District with any of the Sarvis families listed there. He may have been from a neighboring county.

They were on the 1870 census in Horry, in Bayboro Township.

** I have not yet checked 1900 or later census records for them.

William Johnson was born ca 1850/51 in Horry Dist, SC. He could be a grandson of Phillip and Mary instead of a son, but his mother would have been about 50 years old when he was born, which is possible. He was with his (grand)parents for the 1860 census.

I did not find him in 1870, so he may have died, or moved away.
