I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to William Johnson.

This family apparently lived in the section of Horry County that later became Dog Bluff Township.

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson". I'm not sure which is the "correct" spelling for this family. Most modern records show "Johnson".

William Johnson was born ca 1770/74 (per various census records) in South Carolina, presumably in that part of old Georgetown District that is now Horry County.

I don't know who William Johnson's parents were. I know he was a proven brother of Joseph Johnson Sr (1755/65), and was named in Joseph's Will dated 21 Jun 1832 (in Horry) as one of the executors as "my brother William Johnston".

William Johnson would have been between 16 and 20 years old in 1790. If listed on the 1790 census, he would have been in the age 16+ category (bef 1774). There was only one Johnson listed with an "extra" male age 16+ with them, and that was an Archibald Johnston. I have no additional data on him, so I don't know if he is a good suspect for William's father or not.

There was a William listed in 1790 as head of household, but I don't think it was this William, but an older one from Marion instead.

William Johnson married someone in the 1790-1800 timeframe, in Georgetown District (now Horry Co, SC). I don't know what this first wife's name might have been. She was born ca 1774/84 per the 1800 census.

In 1800, William Johnson was listed on the census in Georgetown District, Waccamaw County (which is now Horry County).

William Johnson was listed on the 1810 census in Horry Dist, SC on the same page with his brother Joseph Johnson (1755/65). William had an older woman with him in 1810, who could be his mother, or perhaps his mother-in-law.

William's wife died sometime before ca 1820, for it was around then that William married Elizabeth ---. I don't know her maiden name, but she was born ca 1800/01 in SC, presumably Horry District.

In 1820, William Johnson was listed on the census in Horry Dist, SC on the same page with all the other Johnsons (I think it was alphabetical).

William Johnson was listed on the index for the 1830 census in Horry Dist, SC. ** Unfortunately, I don't yet have the 1830 enumerations.

On 6 Apr 1833, William Johnson made his Will in Horry District, SC. This Will has been transcribed by Glenda Moore and posted to the Horry County Historical Society Web pages. Since she already has transcribed it, I'll just summarize here who was mentioned:

"my son John H. Johnston"
"my son William H. Johnston"
"my son Daniel M. Johnston"
"Sarah B. Woodberry" (relation not given)
"my son-in-law Dr. Samuel Hodges"
"my daughter Mary Sarvis"
"my daughter Temperance Johnson"
"my wife Elizabeth Johnson ... and to her children ... Prudence Johnson, Joseph Johnson, Thomas Johnson, James R. Ervin Johnson, Samuel Johnson, and Randolph Johnson".
He appointed sons John H. and William H. Johnson as executors.
(Horry Co, SC Will Book A pg 84, transcribed and published online at the  Horry County Historical Society Web pages).

The Will was not recorded until 1 Oct 1840, so he did not die until sometime in 1840. He was listed on the 1840 census, so still alive as of June 1840.

William Johnson was listed on the 1840 census in Horry Dist, SC.

William Johnson died sometime between the census (June 1840) and 1 Oct 1840 when his Will was recorded in the Will book.

Elizabeth Johnson was listed twice on an 1845 Horry District tax list and taxed for 2 slaves. Another listing for an Elizabeth Johnson with 12 slaves by William Woodbury Guardian, and Margaret (Johnson?), minors. I'm not sure if this second listing is for this same Elizabeth or someone else. (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages)

Elizabeth and family were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC near several other Johnsons.

Children

William Johnson and his first wife, and his second wife Elizabeth, had numerous children. Most were named in his Will of 1833, however, some were born, and apparently died before then, and a few were born after he wrote the will, but before he died in 1840. Some of these born after 1833 might be grandchildren instead of children, but I'll include them here to keep them with the family.

Unknown Son (1790/1800). William Johnson had an apparent son this age with him on the 1800 census. He was not with him in 1810, nor mentioned in the Will of 1833, so he probably died young, or else wasn't a son, but someone else residing with the family.

Unknown Daughter (1790/94). William Johnson had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1800 and 1810 census. She was gone by 1820 so probably married or dead by then.

This is probably one of the daughters named in William's Will whom I have yet to find more data on (Mrs. Samuel Hodges, Mary Sarvis and Temperance Johnson).

This is probably one of the daughters named in William's Will whom I have yet to find more data on (Mrs. Samuel Hodges, Mary Sarvis and Temperance Johnson).

Sarah B. Johnson was born ca 1797/98 in Georgetown Dist, SC (now Horry Co, SC). She was apparently with her parents for the 1800 census (age "under 10", or born ca 1790/1800) and with them in 1810 (age 10-15, born ca 1794/1800), but gone by 1820.

She married General William Woodberry of Marion District, ca 1810/20. William was born 10 Jan 1788 in what is now Marion District, SC.

They lived in the Brittons Neck area of Marion County. This family was written up by W. W. Sellers in his book "A History of Marion County, South Carolina", 1902. on pages 355-358. The article mentioned several children for them, and confirmed that Sarah was a Johnson (she was also named in her father's will, so we have plenty of proof for her).

William Woodberry was married prior to Sarah, to Hannah Davis who died sometime before 1820, I believe.

William Woodberry was listed on the 1820 census in Marion Dist, SC.

William Woodberry died 31 Jan 1851 in Marion Dist, SC in the Brittons Neck section.

"Sarah B. Woodbury" was listed as head of household in 1860 Marion in Brittons Neck, with her son Evander and his wife and children with her. ** I don't have this listing typed up yet.

I did not find Sarah on the 1870 census in Marion Co, SC. She must have died between 1860 and 1870, or else moved away, or remarried.

One of William and Sarah's daughters (Margaret F. Woodberry c1828) married Hugh R. Johnson (c1823) of Marion District. I don't know how he connects to the Horry Johnsons, but I think he does tie in somehow.

John H. Johnson was born ca 1800/10 in Horry District, SC. I have very little data on John at present, so I'm not even sure when he was born approximately.

If he was born ca 1800/10 as I've surmised, then he was home with his parents for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10), and with them in 1820, either age 16-25 (born ca 1794/1804) or age 10-15 (born ca 1804/10).

** John H. Johnson was listed on the 1830 census index in Horry District, but I don't have the enumerations yet.

On 6 Apr 1833, John's father William made his Will in Horry Dist, SC naming his heirs, including "son John H. Johnson". He also named John as one of the Executors. (Horry Co, SC Will Book A pg 84, transcribed and published online at the  Horry County Historical Society Web pages).

There were only two John Johnston's listed on the 1840 census in Horry, one listed as "Sr", the other as "Jr". One of these is John L. Johnston (c1787) son of Joseph Johnson, and the other probably this John. However, neither listing lines up with this John H. Johnston's age group, as far as I can tell.

The one labeled "Jr" is probably John L., and the one labeled "Sr" is probably John H., even though John H. was younger than John L. I can't be sure if this isn't some other John Johnson, but here is the listing. There were 2 males age 50-59 (born ca 1780/90) and one age 40-49 (born ca 1790/1800). I don't know which of these is John.

John H. Johnson was not listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list. (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages).

John H. Johnson did not appear on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC.  The last sure record I have for him in Horry was his father's Will dated 1833. He may have moved away after that, or died.

There was a John Johnson (c1802) in neighboring Marion District, SC in 1850, who seem to have a new wife and children (3 kids under age 4). This could be the same person, though perhaps not.

Unknown Daughter (1800/10). William Johnson had an apparent daughter this age with him on the 1810 census. She was gone by 1820 so probably married or dead by then.

This is probably one of the daughters named in William's Will whom I have yet to find more data on (Mrs. Samuel Hodges, Mary Sarvis and Temperance Johnson).

This age matches fairly well with the wife of Samuel Hodges, who was born ca 1800/04.

William H. Johnson was born ca 1809/10 in Horry Dist, SC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1810 census (age "under 10", born ca 1800/10) and apparently with them in 1820 (age 10-15, born ca 1804/10). ** He may have still been with them in 1830, but I don't have the enumerations yet to be sure.

William H. Johnson married his step-niece Elizabeth Woodberry, daughter of General William Woodberry and his first wife Hannah Davis (his second wife was Sarah B. Johnson, William Johnson's sister). They married ca 1831 in Horry Dist, SC.

See their own page for additional information.

Daniel M. Johnson was born 11 Aug 1811 in Horry Dist, SC. He was apparently home with his parents for the 1820 census (age "under 10", born ca 1810/20). ** He was probably still been with them in 1830, but I don't have the enumerations yet to be sure.

Daniel married Rutilla --- ca 1840 in Horry Dist, SC.

See their own page for additional information.

female Johnson. William Johnson had a daughter who married Doctor Samuel Hodges sometime before 1833. He did not give her name in the Will, but mentioned his "son-in-law Dr. Samuel Hodges". This makes me believe that his daughter was dead by that time, though that may not be true.

William had several daughters per the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census who are not identified yet, and this daughter is probably one of them. She was born ca 1800/04 if she is the female with Samuel in 1820 and 1830.

It looks like Samuel and Miss Johnson married in the 1810/20 timeframe in Horry.

Samuel Hodges was not listed on the 1810 census, but he was on the 1820 census in Horry.

Samuel Hodges was not listed on the 1830 census in Horry, but there was a Samuel in neighboring Marion District. It could be the same person. The ages are a good match:

1 Female(s) 0-4 (1825-1830)	Sarah HODGES(1828/29) daughter

On 6 Apr 1833, William Johnson made his Will in Horry District. He named his "son-in-law Dr. Samuel Hodges" among his heirs, but did not mention his daughter's name. This makes me believe that she was dead by this time. I could be wrong about this though.

For the 1840 census, Samuel Hodges was still in Marion District, and his wife at this time seemed older than his wife of 1830, so he may have remarried in that timeframe. His second wife was Rebecca Singleton, born ca 1795/96.

Samuel Hodges died in 1841 in Marion Dist, SC, leaving a Will naming wife Rebecca, son William H. Hodges, and daughters Elizabeth and Sarah. Apparently all three children were from his first marriage.

Rebecca, widow of Samuel Hodges, was listed on the 1850 and 1860 census in Marion Dist, SC. She died on 2 Mar 1861 per Probate records.

Mary Johnson was born in Horry Dist, SC, possibly in the 1790's. I don't have any idea of her birth date, but she was named in her father's Will in 1833, as "Mary Sarvis". I have not yet identified her in any more detail.

William Johnson had a couple of daughters (per the 1800 and 1810 census) who are not positively identified. One of them was most likely this daughter Mary Johnson.  One of them was born ca 1790/94 and the other ca 1794/1800 (see above for more on them).

All I know about Mary is that she married a Mr. Sarvis before her father's Will was written on 6 Apr 1833.

"Sarvis" is a popular Horry name, so I have not yet identified this Mary. I did not find a Mary Sarvis in 1850 Horry, except for one who was way too young.

William Johnson's two older daughters (born in the 1790's) both seemed to have married between 1810 and 1820 so, perhaps Mary married Mr. Sarvis in that timeframe.

In 1820 Horry, there were four Sarvis households: John, John Sr, John Jr and Samuel Sr. Of these, only "John" had a wife who's age was inline with what Mary's ought to have been.

In 1830 Horry, only John Sarvis was left in Horry. ** I don't have the enumerations yet, so I can't verify the ages.

As mentioned before, on 6 Apr 1833, William Johnson made his Will and named, among others, his "daughter Mary Sarvis".

In 1840 Horry, John Sarvis was not listed, the only listings were for C. B. Sarvis, and Rhoda Sarvis (apparent widow). Both of these were still in Horry in 1850, Rhoda age 50, with children, and C. B. age 45 with wife and kids. If I had to guess, I'd say that Rhoda was widow of John Sarvis of 1820 and 1830 Horry census.

There was a Mary Norman age 45 (born ca 1804/05) in 1850 Horry, an apparent widow, or single person, who had a John Sarvis, age 25, a M. Singleton (female) age 23, and a James Johnston, age 16 residing with her. Just speculation here, but could this be Mary Johnson Sarvis, widowed from Mr. Sarvis (with John Sarvis being her son) and remarried to a Mr. Norman and widowed again? The Sarvis and Johnston residing with her makes it a possibility. The Singleton connection also has Johnson ties, as Dr. Samuel Hodges' second wife was a Singleton (his first wife was Mary Johnson's sister). This is just speculation though, and more evidence is needed to support or refute this theory. Her age isn't exactly in line with what I was looking for, but otherwise it is a possible match.

All of the above adds up to "not much", so I still don't know who Mary Johnson Sarvis was married to.

Temperance Johnson was born in Horry Dist, SC, possibly in the 1790's. I don't have any idea of her birth date, but she was named in her father's Will in 1833, as "Temperance Johnson". I have not yet identified her in any more detail.

William Johnson had a couple of daughters (per the 1800 and 1810 census) who are not positively identified. One of them was most likely this daughter Temperance Johnson.  One of them was born ca 1790/94 and the other ca 1794/1800 (see above for more on them).

In 1833, Temperance was either still single, or married to another Johnson.

I have not yet found out anything else about her.

Prudence Johnson was born in Horry Dist, SC, probably ca 1820/25. ** She was probably home with her parents for the 1830 census (I don't have enumerations yet). She did seem to be with them in 1840.

Prudence Johnson was named in her father's Will in 1833.

Prudence was not home with her widowed mother in 1850, so she probably had married or died by then. If she married, I don't know to whom.

Joseph Johnson was born ca 1821/22 (per 1850 census) or ca 1819/20 (per 1870 census) in Horry Dist, SC. ** He was probably home with his parents for the 1830 census (I don't have enumerations yet). He did seem to be with them in 1840.

Joseph Johnson was named in his father's Will in 1833.

"Joseph Johnson Jr" was listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list, and taxed for 935 acres and 2 slaves. (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages).

On the 1850 census, Joseph Johnson was listed by himself, next door to his widowed mother. He was listed as Joseph "Jr". The elder Joseph Johnson (c1787) was next door to him on the other side.

I did not find Joseph Johnson on the 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC.

He was back in Horry for the 1870 census, listed in Dog Bluff Township, still apparently single. He was next door to Hannah Johnson, either a widow, or single mother. She was black, and her children listed as Mulatto's.

Thomas Johnson was born ca 1821/22 in Horry Dist, SC. ** He was probably home with his parents for the 1830 census (I don't have enumerations yet). He did seem to be with them in 1840.

Thomas Johnson was named in his father's Will in 1833.

"Thomas M. Johnson" was listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list, and taxed for 41 acres and 2 slaves. I don't know if this is the same person or not. (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages).

Thomas was home with his widowed mother in 1850, listed as age 28.

I did not find this Thomas in 1860 or 1870, unless he is the same as Thomas J. Johnson (c1828) who was in Horry in 1860 and 1870. He was born in NC though, and his age is off somewhat.

James R. Ervin Johnson was born ca 1827/28 in Horry Dist, SC. ** He was probably home with his parents for the 1830 census (I don't have enumerations yet). He did seem to be with them in 1840.

James R. Ervin Johnson was named in his father's Will in 1833.

"James R. E. Johnson" was listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list, and taxed for 2 slaves. He was listed as a "minor" with Daniel M. Johnson (his brother) as guardian. (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages).

He was home with his widowed mother in 1850, listed as age 23.

He was still home with his mother for the 1860 census, listed as age 30.

He was still with her in 1870, listed as age 40.

** I have not yet checked the 1880 or later census records for this family.

Samuel Johnson was born ca 1829/30 in Horry Dist, SC. ** He was probably home with his parents for the 1830 census (I don't have enumerations yet). He did seem to be with them in 1840.

Samuel Johnson was named in his father's Will in 1833.

He was home with his widowed mother in 1850, listed as age 20.

I did not find Samuel in the 1860 or 1870 census in Horry.

Randolph Johnson was born ca 1831/32 in Horry Dist, SC. He seemed to be with his parents for the 1840 census.

Randolph Johnson was named in his father's Will in 1833.

He was home with his widowed mother in 1850, listed as age 18.

He was still with her in 1860, listed as age 26.

In 1870, he was head of household in Dog Bluff Township, though single. He had his mother and two brothers living with him.

In 1880, Randolph was listed in Horry in Bucks Township. He seemed to have a large family all of a sudden, some of his children born before 1870, but there were none with him in 1870. This may mean that the children belong to his new wife, and are not his, or that they are his, but were just not listed in 1870 (nor was his wife).

Elizabeth Johnson was born ca 1833/34 in Horry Dist, SC. She seemed to be with her parents for the 1840 census.

Elizabeth was born after her father made his Will in 1833.

She was home with her widowed mother in 1850, listed as age 16.

She was not found in 1860, so probably married or dead by then.

John H. Johnson was born 13 Aug 1836 in Horry Dist, SC. He seemed to be with his parents for the 1840 census.

John is probably a grandson instead of a son, as William Johnson already had a son named "John H. Johnson" who was much older than this one.

He was home with presumed grandmother Elizabeth in 1850, listed as age 14.

He was with her in 1860 also, listed as age 24.

He was still with her in 1870, listed as age 35.

** I have not yet checked the 1880 or later census records for this family.

John died on 26 Nov 1907 and is buried at Bunker Hill Cemetery, Horry Co, SC. (online at Horry County Historical Society).

Francis Marion Johnson was born 26 Jul 1838 in Horry Dist, SC. He seemed to be with his parents for the 1840 census.

Marion was born after his father made his Will in 1833.

He was home with his widowed mother in 1850, listed as age 13.

He was with her still in 1860, age 21.

Marion married Temperance --- sometime before ca 1869 in Horry Co, SC. They were on the 1870 census in Horry, in Dog Bluff Township near other family members. She was born 29 Mar 1833 (per tombstone).
