I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to Thomas J. Johnson.
This family resided in the Gallivants Ferry Township section of Horry County.
Thomas J. Johnson was born ca 1826/27 (per 1860 census) in North Carolina (probably in one of the nearby counties of Robeson, Columbus or Brunswick, though possibly elsewhere).
I don't know what his middle initial of "J" stood for, though it could be "Jefferson", as "Thomas Jefferson" was a popular given name in those days.
I don't know who Thomas' parents were. If he was from North Carolina, then he might not be related to the Horry Johnson families. On the other hand he lived very near to several of them, and could be closely related, just born in NC for some reason (family was visiting relatives there when he was born, or something like that).
That leaves the field wide open for finding Thomas' parents. Their may be some evidence regarding his parentage somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet. I don't yet have the 1830 census enumerations for Horry Dist, SC. If I did, I could possibly narrow the list of suspects somewhat based on who had male children about his age then.
In 1830, Thomas J. Johnson would have been about 3 years old. He would have been enumerated in the "under 5" age group (c1825/30) or in the 5-9 group (born ca 1820/25). ** I don't yet have the 1830 census enumerations.
In 1840, Thomas J. Johnson would have been about 13 years old. He would have been enumerated in the 10-14 age group (born ca 1825/30) or perhaps in the 15-19 group (born ca 1820/25). There were several Johnson households in Horry in 1840 with apparent sons that age. Ignoring the ones who are already proven out, we have: Phillip Johnson (c1795) who had an "extra" male ca 1825/30. Allen Johnson (c1790/1800) had an apparent son born ca 1825/30 who is unclaimed. Meshack Johnson (c1795) had an apparent son ca 1820/25 and one ca 1825/30, neither of which are proven. John Johnson Sr (c1780/90) (whom I believe is John H. Johnson, son of William Sr) had a son born ca 1825/30; James Johnson (c1795) had two unknown sons born ca 1825/30. William Johnson (c1800) had one unknown son ca 1825/30.
The above (Phillip, Allen Sr, Meshack, John H., James and William Johnson) are the prime suspects for Thomas J. Johnson's parents, assuming he was in Horry already then, and based only on census analysis. More data is needed to narrow it down any better.
Thomas was not listed on the 1850 census in Horry, unless he was the Thomas J. Johnson listed with the Pugh Floyd family. That Thomas was listed as "47" years old (born ca 1803), and born in NC. The name and birth places are a perfect match, but the age is off by 20 years. Since I have no additional data on that Thomas, I tend to believe it could be the same person, only with his age entered wrong.
Just in case that is the same person, here is the entry:

It should be noted that this household was next door to another Floyd family, where Allen W. Johnson (c1825) was residing. Allen is my ancestor. If not for the difference in their birth places, I'd strongly suspect that Allen and Thomas were brothers. They could still be brothers. They were near each other in 1860 also.
Thomas J. Johnson married Eliza C. --- ca 1850/55 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name, but she was born ca 1835/36 in SC, presumably Horry. It is possible that she is the same person as Eliza Caroline Floyd (1833) who was a daughter of Pugh Floyd (with whom Thomas was living in 1850), as they named one of their sons "Pugh". This is just a wild guess though, but the name and ages are close for her to be the same person as Eliza Caroline Floyd.
Thomas and family were listed on the 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC. They were not too far from Allen W. Johnson (c1825) and family (about 20 houses away).

They were still in Horry for the 1870 census, in Gallivants Ferry Township. They were next door to Carmi Johnson (1829).

It looks like Thomas J. Johnson died in the 1870/80 timeframe, as Eliza was listed as a widow in 1880 with her daughter Roseanna and her new husband. They were in Dog Bluff Township, not close to any other Johnsons.

Thomas and Eliza seemed to have at least four children, per the 1860 and 1870 census.
Eliza Jane Johnson was born ca 1854/55 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with parents in 1860 and 1870. She was not with her widowed mother in 1880. She may have married or died before then.
Henry J. Johnson was born ca 1856/57 in Horry Dist, SC. He was home with parents in 1860, but gone by 1870.
Pugh Johnson was born ca 1858/59 in Horry Dist, SC. He was home with parents in 1860 and 1870. He was not with her widowed mother in 1880.
Rosanna Johnson was born ca 1861/62 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with parents in 1870.
Rosanna married Henry D. Hickman ca 1870/80 in Horry Co, SC. He was born ca 1859/60 in North Carolina.
They were listed on the 1880 census in Dog Bluff Township with her widowed mother living with them, and with Henry's brother Samuel with them also.
