I (Marty Grant) am a 3rd Great Grandson of Allen and Celia Johnson.

Special thanks to Lisa Gogan and Becky Maples and others who have shared data with me on this family.

This family resided in the Gallivants Ferry Township section of Horry County.

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was as "Johnson". I'm not sure which is the "correct" spelling for this family.

Allen Warin Johnson was born ca 1826/27 (per 1850 census) or ca 1824/25 (per 1860 census) in South Carolina, presumably Horry District. His full name is proven by his estate records.

I don't know who Allen's parents were. There are numerous suspects. It should also be noted that there was another Allen Johnson who was roughly the same age (born ca 1824/25) who was a son of Phillip Johnson of Horry. At first I thought that was my Allen, but it turns out they are two different people.

That leaves the field wide open for finding Allen's parents. Their may be some evidence regarding his parentage somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet. I don't yet have the 1830 census enumerations for Horry Dist, SC. If I did, I could possibly narrow the list of suspects somewhat based on who had male children about his age then. There is a Thomas J. Johnson (c1807) who could be Allen's father. He lived next to Allen in 1850, though appeared to be single (could have been widowed). He was born in NC, and was not on the 1840 or earlier census, nor found on 1860 or later census.

In 1830, Allen W. Johnson would have been about 5 years old, or perhaps 3. He would have been enumerated in the "under 5" age group (c1825/30) or in the 5-9 group (born ca 1820/25). ** I don't yet have the 1830 census enumerations.

In 1840, Allen W. Johnson would have been about 13 or 15 years old. He would have been enumerated in the 10-14 age group (born ca 1825/30) or perhaps in the 15-19 group (born ca 1820/25). There were several Johnson households in Horry in 1840 with apparent sons that age. Ignoring the ones who are already proven out, we have: Phillip Johnson (c1795) who had an "extra" male ca 1825/30. However, he had a proven son named Allen, who was not the same as this Allen; Allen Johnson (c1790/1800) had an apparent son born ca 1825/30 who is unclaimed. Considering the name, this could easily be Allen W. Johnson's father. Meshack Johnson (c1795) had an apparent son ca 1820/25 and one ca 1825/30, neither of which are proven. John Johnson Sr (c1780/90) (whom I believe is John H. Johnson, son of William Sr) had a son born ca 1825/30; James Johnson (c1795) had two unknown sons born ca 1825/30. William Johnson (c1800) had one unknown son ca 1825/30.

The above (Allen Sr, Meshack, John H., James and William Johnson) are the prime suspects for Allen W. Johnson's parents, based only on census analysis. More data is needed to narrow it down any better.

Allen was listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC with the William and Mary Floyd family (relationship unknown, but Allen would later marry William's sister Celia).

Allen W. Johnson married Celia Floyd ca 1851 in Horry Dist, SC.

Celia Floyd was born 16 Mar 1823 (per Martha Floyd Miller and Mrs. Janet Woodard) in Horry Dist, SC. Celia was a daughter of Pugh Floyd and Jane Graham.

Celia Floyd was previously married to Hugh Floyd Jr (son of Hugh and Susannah Floyd) who died in 1847. Hugh (Jr) was born ca 1819 in Horry Dist, SC and died ca 1847. Hugh and Celia had three children together.

Allen and Celia and family were listed on the 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC. Celia's three Floyd children were home with them, though two of them were mistakenly listed as "Johnson". The oldest daughter was married, and she and her husband Hugh Graham were with them as well.

Allen Warin Johnson died sometime between 1860 and 1866, perhaps due to the Civil War. I don't know if he served or not.

In his Probate records, it shows that on 27 Jan 1866, Matthew R. Skipper applied for letters of administration. The same records show that he became guardian for the minor heirs including Celey C. Johnson, William Thomas Johnson and Ellin Louisa Johnson, and that "Marion" R. Skipper (same person as "Matthew"?) and wife Ann Eliza filed suit against Celia Jolly (the widow) and minors for partition of the estate. (Horry Co, SC Probate Records Box 14A, package 5, thanks to Becky Maples and Lisa Gogan for sharing this data).

The above probate records show all of Allen and Celia's children (but not Celia's children by her former marriage). It also shows that Celia remarried after Allen's death. Sometime before 1866, Celia Floyd Floyd Johnson married --- Jolly. (Don't know who yet).

Celia's 3rd husband, Mr. Jolly, died sometime before 1870, for she was listed as an apparent widow on the 1870 census in Horry County, in Gallivants Ferry. She had four children still with her, and several grandchildren.  There was also Sally Ward (c1800) residing with them, relationship unknown.  She must be a relative, for back in 1860 she was living with Pugh and Jane Floyd, Celia's parents.

Also with Celia in 1870 was a 28 year old Alfred Watts, whom Celia would marry sometime after 1870.

Sometime between 1870 and 1880, Celia Floyd Floyd Johnson Jolly married Alfred Watts in Horry Co, SC. I have not found his parents yet, but he was born ca 1841/42 in Horry. In 1860 and 1870 he was living with other families (in 1870 with Celia). In 1850 I didn't find him, unless he was an "A. Watts" that I located ("A. Watts" age 9, with "A. Watts" age 40, and "E. Watts" age 30). This is probably him, I suspect.

I found Alfred and Celia, and one of her daughters, and several of her children (Celia's grandchildren) on the 1880 census in Horry, in Gallivants Ferry Township. This census lists the relationship to several of the grandchildren (all Grahams) as Celia's children, which is a mistake, I believe.

I did not find Celia on the 1900 census, nor Alfred Watts. I did find Celia's daughter Martha, who had lived with her all the years before, and she was not with her then, so I suspect Celia was dead by 1900.

Children

Celia Floyd and her first husband Hugh Floyd had three children. Celia and her 2nd husband Allen Johnson had five children. I don't know if Celia and her 3rd husband, Mr. Jolly had any children or not. These children are proven by the 1850 and 1860 census, and by Allen W. Johnson's Probate records (1866). It also does not appear that Celia and her 4th husband, Alfred Watts, had any children together.

Martha A. Floyd was born ca 1843/44 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her widowed mother for the 1850 census.

Martha married Hugh Graham in the 1850/60 timeframe, probably closer to 1860 in Horry Dist, SC.

I don't know who Hugh Graham's parents were. He was born ca 1833/34 (per 1860 census) in SC, presumably Horry District. I did not find him in Horry on the 1850 census.

Hugh and Martha were home with her family for the 1860 census.

Martha was home with her mother for the 1870 and 1880 census.

In 1900, Martha was in Horry, in Gallivants Ferry Township. ** I don't have this typed up yet.

Patience Floyd was born ca 1845/46 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC.

I have no additional data on Patience after this point.

Mary A. J. Floyd was born 11 May 1847 (per tombstone) in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1850 and 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC.

Mary married Matthew McKinley "Mack" Skipper ca 1865 in Horry Dist, SC. Mack was born 29 Oct 1844 (per tombstone) in Horry Dist, SC, son of Arthur C. and Mary A. --- Skipper.

Mack and Mary were listed on the 1870 census in Horry Co, SC in Gallivants Ferry Township.

William married Mary A. --- between 1870 and ca 1878 in Horry Co, SC. I don't know what her maiden name was. She was born ca 1855/56 in SC, presumably Horry District.

They were listed on the 1880 census in Horry, in Gallivants Ferry Township just three houses from Sarah A. Johnson (c1825).

** I have not yet checked the 1900 and later census records for this family.

Ellen Louisa Johnson was born ca 1858/59 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1860 census.

She married James W. Edwards ca 1875 in Horry Co, SC. See their own page for additional information.

John L. Johnson was born ca 1859 (age 10 months in 1860) in Horry Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1860 census.

John was not named on the 1866 probate records naming the heirs of Allen Warin Johnson. This may mean that he had died by then, or was just left out for some reason. I think he died, as I found no record of him on later census.
