I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to Sarah Johnson.

This family apparently lived in what later became Gallivants Ferry Township of Horry County, SC.

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson".

Sarah A. Johnson was born ca 1824/25 (per 1850 census) in South Carolina, presumably Horry District. It is possible that Sarah was not a Johnson by birth, but a widow of an unknown Mr. Johnson. She did seem to have a lot of children, and at a glance, they seem to all be born out of wedlock. I could be wrong about this though.

I don't know who Sarah's parents were. There are numerous suspects. That leaves the field wide open. Their may be some evidence regarding her parentage somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet.

** In 1830, Sarah would have been about 5 years old, and presumably home with her parents. I don't have the enumerations for 1830 yet, so I can't analyze the data at this time.

In 1840, Sarah would have been about 15 years old, so if listed, she would be in the age 15-19 category (born ca 1820/25) or possibly in the 10-14 age group (ca 1825/30). Phillip Johnson (c1795) had an apparent daughter age 15-19 with him in 1840. Allen Johnson (c1790/1800) also had an apparent daughter that age in 1840, and two age 10-14. Meshack Johnson (c1795) had two apparent daughters her age in 1840, and two in the 10-14 age group. John Johnson Sr had 1 age 15-19 and 2 age 10-24.  James Johnson (c1795), John L. Johnson (c1787), William Johnson (c1800), Mary Ann Johnson (c1800/10) and William Johnson Sr (1770/74) all had at least one daughter in one of those age groups with them in 1840. This is too many to narrow it down from. Other evidence will be required to figure out who Sarah's parents were.

Sarah apparently began having children out of wedlock in the mid 1840's, either that or she was raising orphaned nieces and nephews. It seems more likely that they were her own children.

"Sarah A. Johnson" was listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list and taxed for 1 slave.  I think this is the same Sarah. (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages)

In 1850, she was residing fairly close to M. N. Johnson (c1818) and Avey Johnson (c1832). Avey Johnson was also an apparent single mother. M. N. and Avey could be Sarah's siblings.

I did not Sarah in Horry in 1860 (nor did I find her possible siblings M. N. and Avey, yet all of them were still around apparently, but missed somehow).

Sarah was listed on the 1870 census in Horry, in Gallivants Ferry Township near many other Johnson families. She was two houses from her supposed sister Avey Johnson (c1832). By this time, Sarah had several more children born after 1850, so that seems to support the single mother theory, unless none of these were her own children.

Sarah was listed in Gallivants Ferry Township for the 1880 census, this record confirms that the children were hers, and that she was single. She had some grandchildren with her, but I don't know who their parents were.

** I have not yet checked the 1900 or later census records for more data on this family.

Children

Sarah Johnson had at least five children per the 1850, 1870 and 1880 census records. I have not found too much on these kids yet, so I'll not give them their own sections. However, I have found some birth and death dates in the Cemetery records, so I have that for some of them.
