I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to Avey Johnson.
This Johnson family apparently lived in what later became Gallivants Ferry Township of Horry County, SC.
The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson". I'm not sure which is the "correct" spelling for this family.
Avey Johnson (also spelled "Avi") was born ca 1831/32 (per 1850 census) in South Carolina, presumably Horry District. She seems to be a sister to M. N. Johnson (c1818) as she was living with him in 1850. She might be a niece instead, but she is somehow connected.
I don't know who Avey parents were. There are numerous suspects. That leaves the field wide open. Their may be some evidence regarding her parentage somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet.
In 1840, Avey would have been about 8 years old, so if listed, she would be in the age 5-9 category (born ca 1830/35). Phillip Johnson (c1795) had an apparent daughter this age with him in 1840. Allen Johnson (c1790/1800) also had an apparent daughter that age in 1840. Meshack Johnson (c1795) had an apparent daughter her age in 1840. James Johnson (c1795), William Johnson (c1800), Azariah Johnson (1810/20), and Daniel Johnson (c1789) all had at least one daughter that age with them in 1840.
Avey apparently began having children out of wedlock in the late 1840's, either that or she was raising orphaned nieces and nephews. She was residing with supposed brother M. N. Johnson for the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC just five houses from Sarah Johnson (c1825), either a widow, or single mother.

I did not Avey in Horry in 1860.
Avey was listed on the 1870 census in Horry, in Gallivants Ferry Township near many other Johnson families. She was next door to her supposed niece Rutilla C. Johnson Skipper (d/o M. N. Johnson) and husband Bethel Skipper.

Avey and daughter Rutilla were still in Gallivants Ferry Township for the 1880 census.

** I have not yet checked the 1900 or later census records for more data on this family.
Avey Johnson had three children per the 1850 and 1870 census records.
Meredith Johnson was born ca 1848/49 in Horry Dist, SC. He was home with Avey for the 1850 census. On that census his race was listed as "M" (Mulatto).
I don't have the family on the 1860 census.
He was not with his mother for the 1870 census, nor did I find him elsewhere in Horry in 1870.
Julia Johnson was born ca 1859/60 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with Avey for the 1870 census, but gone by 1880, so possibly married or dead by then.
Rutilla M. Johnson was born ca 1865/66 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with Avey for the 1870 and 1880 census.
** I have not yet checked the 1900 and later census records for this family.
