I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to James Johnson.

This family apparently lived in the section of Horry County that later became Gallivants Ferry Township, or possibly in Dog Bluff Township (or both).

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson". I'm not sure which is the "correct" spelling for this family.

James Johnson was born ca 1794/95 (per 1850 and 1860 census) in South Carolina, presumably in that part of old Georgetown District that is now Horry County.

James Johnson is a proven son of Joseph Johnston Sr (1755/65), and was named in Joseph's Will dated 21 Jun 1832 (in Horry).

In 1800, James Johnson would have been about 5 years old, so if listed on the census, he would be in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1790/1800). He was apparently home with his father Joseph, as he had two sons that age with him in 1800.

In 1810, James would have been about 15 years old, so should be enumerated in the age 10-15 category (born ca 1794/1800) or possibly in the 16-25 age group (c1784/94). He was apparently home with his father Joseph in 1810.

In 1820, James Johnson was either still at home with his father Joseph (listed as age 16-25, born ca 1794/1804), or he was listed as a head of household. There is a James listed in 1820. I'm not sure if it is this James or not.

James Johnson married Anna --- sometime before 1827 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know what her maiden name is. She was born either ca 1809/10 (per the 1850 census) or ca 1794/95 (per 1860 census).

James Johnson was listed on the 1830 census in Horry Dist, SC. ** Unfortunately, I don't yet have the 1830 enumerations.

On 21 Jun 1832, James' father Joseph Johnston made his Will in Horry District, SC. He named his children, including James who he left a "Negro woman named Beck and her child Sam". (Horry Co, SC Will Book A pg 65, transcribed and published online at the  Horry County Historical Society Web pages)

James Johnson was listed on the 1840 census in Horry Dist, SC. He was close to several other Johnson families then, including cousin Daniel Johnson (c1811), brother John L. Johnson (c1787), and brother William Johnson (c1800).

James Johnson was listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list and taxed for 200 acres and 2 slaves. His name was given as "James Johnson". (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages)

James and family were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC next door to his brother William Johnson.

James and family were listed on the 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC. He was just a few houses from his sister-in-law Ann, widow of brother John L. Johnson (c1787).

I didn't find James on the 1870 census. There were several "Ann" and "Anna" listings, but I don't know which, if any, were wife of James. I suppose that means both James and Anna died between 1860 and 1870, though one of the Ann's listed in 1870 could be the same person as James' wife.

** I have not yet checked for this family on 1880 and later census records.

Children

James and Anna had at least four children per the 1850 and 1860 census. Their may be others also per earlier census records.

Unknown Son (1825/30). James Johnson had an apparent son this age with him in 1840. (** He was probably with him in 1830 also). He was gone from James' household by 1850, so probably had married, moved away or died by then.

I don't know who this son might have been.

Jackson Johnson was born ca 1826/27 in Horry Dist, SC. ** He was probably with home with his parents for the 1830 census. He was apparently with them in 1840. He was home with his parents in 1850.

In 1860, he was not listed, unless he is the same person as "John" listed with them in 1860, if so, either his name was "John Jackson Johnson", or these are two different sons. (No "John" was with the family in 1850).

There was a "John Johnson" age 35 (born ca 1834/35) in 1870 Horry in Dog Bluff Township, but I don't know if it is this same person or not. I found no "Jackson" listed in 1870 Horry.

** I have not yet checked for this family on 1880 and later census records.

Sarah A. Johnson was born ca 1829/30 in Horry Dist, SC. ** She was probably with home with her parents for the 1830 census. She was apparently with them in 1840. She was home with them in 1850.

She was not with her parents in 1860, so probably had married or died by then.

Daniel M. Johnson was born ca 1834/35 in Horry Dist, SC. He was apparently with his parents in 1840. He was home with them in 1850 and 1860.

Daniel M. Johnson married Mary E. --- before 1870 in Horry Co, SC. I don't know her maiden name.

They were listed on the 1870 census in Horry Co, SC in Dog Bluff Township. He was next to William H. Johnson (1810) (his cousin).

Joseph Johnson was born ca 1836/37 in Horry Dist, SC. He was apparently with his parents in 1840. He was home with them in 1850.

Joseph Johnson married Charlotte --- before 1860 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name.

Joseph and Charlotte were listed on the 1860 census in Horry. They had no children yet, so probably had just married within the past few months.

I did not find them in Horry in 1870. There was a Joseph Johnson in Dog Bluff close in age (age 30, born ca 1839/40), with a wife Mary E., and two children born in the 1860's. This could be the same person, if Charlotte died and he remarried. Since I can't find this Joseph elsewhere, and the one in 1870 can't be identified either, I believe they are one and the same.

That means that Charlotte died ca 1860/70, and that Joseph married Mary E. --- between 1860 and 1870 in Horry Dist, SC. The 7 year gap in the children seems to show that Charlotte was the mother of Joseph, born ca 1863, and that she died around that time, and that Joseph married Mary closer to 1868 or so.
