I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to William Johnson.

This family apparently lived in the section of Horry County that later became Gallivants Ferry Township, or possibly in Dog Bluff Township (or both).

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson". I'm not sure which is the "correct" spelling for this family.

William Johnson was born ca 1792/93 (per 1850 census) or ca 1799/1800 (per 1860 census). I suspect the latter date, as it fits better with other records. He was born in South Carolina, presumably in that part of old Georgetown District that is now Horry County.

William Johnson is a proven son of Joseph Johnston Sr (1755/65), and was named in Joseph's Will dated 21 Jun 1832 (in Horry).

In 1800, William Johnson would have been about 7 years old or less, so if listed on the census, he would be in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1790/1800). He was apparently home with his father Joseph, as he had two sons that age with him in 1800.

In 1810, William would have been about 10 to 17 years old, so should be enumerated in the age 10-15 category (born ca 1794/1800) or possibly in the 16-25 age group (c1784/94). He was apparently home with his father Joseph in 1810 (in the 1794/1804 age group).

In 1820, William Johnson would have been about 20 to 27 years old, and was still apparently at home with his father Joseph (listed as age 16-25, born ca 1794/1804).

William would have been about 30 to 37 years old in 1830. He was not listed as head of household in Horry, so I suspect he was still home with his father. ** Unfortunately, I don't yet have the 1830 enumerations, so I can't confirm my theory.

William Johnson married Nancy --- sometime before 1832 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know what her maiden name is. She was born either ca 1809/10 (per the 1850 census) or ca 1814/15 (per 1860 census). The 1840 census shows them with two apparent children born ca 1825/30 which predates this supposed marriage date, but they might not be children of theirs, but nieces and nephews instead.

On 21 Jun 1832, William's father Joseph Johnston made his Will in Horry District, SC. He named his children, including William who he left slaves "Peter and Hiram". (Horry Co, SC Will Book A pg 65, transcribed and published online at the  Horry County Historical Society Web pages)

William Johnson was listed on the 1840 census in Horry Dist, SC. He was close to several other Johnson families then, including cousin Daniel Johnson (c1811), brother John L. Johnson (c1787), and brother James Johnson (c1795).

William Johnson was listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list and taxed for 300 acres and 2 slaves. His name was given as "William Johnson". (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages)

William and family were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC next door to his brother James Johnson.

William and family were listed on the 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC. He was two houses from his cousin Daniel M. Johnson (1810) and two houses from J. J. Johnson (c1830), relation unknown.

I didn't find William nor Nancy on the 1870 census, nor any of their children.

** I have not yet checked for this family on 1880 and later census records.
