I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to John L. Johnson.
** This family apparently lived in the section of Horry County that later became Gallivants Ferry Township, or possibly in Dog Bluff Township (or both).
The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson". I'm not sure which is the "correct" spelling for this family.
John L. Johnson was born ca 1786/87 (per 1850 census) in South Carolina, presumably in that part of old Georgetown District that is now Horry County.
John L. Johnson is a proven son of Joseph Johnston Sr (1755/65), and was named in Joseph's Will dated 21 Jun 1832 (in Horry).
For the 1790 census, John L. Johnson would have been about 3 years old, so if listed, would be in the "under 16" age group (born ca 1774/90). He does seem to be with his father Joseph in Georgetown Dist, SC, Prince George Parish, in the "under 16" age group.
In 1800, John L. Johnson would have been about 13 years old, so if listed on the census, he would be in the 10-15 age group (born ca 1784/90). His father Joseph (in Georgetown District, Waccamaw County, SC) had one male this age with him in 1800, but he should have two (John and his brother Joseph Jr), so either this is a mistake, or I have one of their birth years wrong, or perhaps John was living elsewhere. At age 13 he could have been with another family as a hired laborer, or been in school. So I can't say with any certainty that John was home with his father in 1800, though he could have been.
John L. Johnson apparently married someone in the 1800-1810 timeframe, in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know who his first wife was, but she was born ca 1784/94.
John L. Johnson was listed on the 1810 census in Horry Dist, SC.

In 1820, John L. Johnson was listed as "Sr", probably due to his first cousin John H. Johnson being about 21 by this time, so they needed to be distinguished from one another.
His family structure was different from that of 1810. His wife in 1810 was born ca 1784/94, but in 1820 was born ca 1794/1804 (which could be the same wife, if born ca 1794), but could indicate that his wife (from 1810) had died, and he had remarried. Also, his apparent son and daughter (both born ca 1800/10) from 1810 were gone by 1820. All of this could mean they died, or that the 1810 listing is not for this same John under study here.

There were two listings for a "John Johnston" on the 1830 census in Horry Dist, SC, and another listing for John H. Johnston.** Unfortunately, I don't yet have the 1830 enumerations, so I don't know which of these was John L. Johnson.
On 21 Jun 1832, John's father Joseph Johnston made his Will in Horry District, SC. He named his children, including John who he left a "one Negro woman Peg". (Horry Co, SC Will Book A pg 65, transcribed and published online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages).
John's wife (name unknown) died sometime before ca 1840, for around this time (or earlier), he married Ann --- in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know her maiden name. She was born ca 1819/20.
There were two listings for a John Johnson on the 1840 census, one "Sr" the other "Jr". I did not see the original listing, but a transcript, so I think they were misread, leaving this John as "Jr" when in fact he should be "Sr". ** I'll have to verify this by checking the original record. I may have them mixed up myself. ** When I get the 1830 data for comparison, I should be able to figure out which was which. The other one must be John H. Johnson, son of William Johnson Sr.
John L. Johnson was close to several other Johnson families then, including cousin Daniel Johnson (c1811), brother James Johnson (c1795) and brother William Johnson (c1800).

John L. Johnson was listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list and taxed for 200 acres. His name was given as "John L. Johnson". (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages)
John and family were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC near several other Johnsons.

John L. Johnson apparently died between ca 1855 and 1860 in Horry Dist, SC.
Ann, widow of John, and family were listed on the 1860 census in Horry Dist, SC. She was just a few houses from her brother-in-law James Johnson (c1795).

I didn't find Anna, nor any of the young children on the 1870 census. There were several "Ann" and "Anna" listings, but I don't know which, if any, were this one, none seem to match in age, nor children.
** I have not yet checked for this family on 1880 and later census records.
John L. Johnson and his first wife, and second (or third?) wife Ann had several children per the census records. Only a few are identified, and those mostly from the 1850 and 1860 census, all apparently from the marriage to Ann.
Unknown Son (1800/10). John L. Johnson had an apparent son this age with him for the 1810 census. However, he was gone by 1820, so either moved out or died by then.
** I don't know who this son might be.
Unknown Daughter (1800/10). John L. Johnson had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1810 census. However, she was gone by 1820, so either moved out or died by then.
Unknown Daughter (1810/20). John L. Johnson had an apparent daughter this age with him for the 1820 census. ** I don't have the 1830 census enumerations yet, so I don't know if she was still home at that time. She was gone by 1840 though, so either married or dead by then.

Thomas Johnson was born ca 1839/40 in Horry Dist, SC. He seems to be home with his parents for the 1840 census, and he was with them in 1850 and 1860.
I did not find Thomas on the 1870 census, so he may have been dead by then (perhaps due to the Civil War?) or moved away.
Benjamin Johnson was born ca 1840/41 in Horry Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census.
Benjamin was not found on the 1860 or later census records.
Preston Johnson was born ca 1842/43 in Horry Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census.
Preston was not found on the 1860 or later census records, unless he was the "James P. Johnson" age 12 (c1848) with his widowed mother in 1860. This could be him, if his name was "James Preston", however, I don't know if that is the case, and the age is off by several years.
Joseph Johnson was born ca 1845/46 in Horry Dist, SC. He was home with his parents for the 1850 census.
Joseph was not found on the 1860 or later census records, unless he was the "James P. Johnson" age 12 (c1848) with his widowed mother in 1860. This could be him, if his name was misread. ** I did not view the original census, but a transcript, so I'll have to check and see if the original said "James" or "Joseph" in 1860. In 1850, his name was very clearly written as "Joseph".
Frances Johnson was born ca 1847/48 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her parents for the 1850 census. Her name was spelled "Francis" on the 1850 census, which is the masculine spelling, yet her sex was given as Female. Based on this contradiction, I don't know which is correct, whether this was a male or female.
Frances was not found in 1860, so probably had died by then, since she would only have been 12, it seems unlikely that she was married yet (though possible).
Lavall Johnson was born ca 1850/51 in Horry Dist, SC. He was home with his widowed mother for the 1860 census.
I did not find him in 1870.
Amanda Johnson was born ca 1852/53 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her widowed mother for the 1860 census.
I did not find her in 1870.
Isadora Johnson was born ca 1853/54 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her widowed mother for the 1860 census.
I did not find her in 1870.
Emeline Johnson was born ca 1854/55 in Horry Dist, SC. She was home with her widowed mother for the 1860 census.
I did not find her in 1870.
