I (Marty Grant) don't know how or if I'm related to M. N. Johnson.

Special thanks to Kathie Hinson for data shared on this family.

This Johnson family apparently lived in what later became Gallivants Ferry Township of Horry County, SC, or possibly in Dog Bluff Township (or in the border region).

The Horry County Johnson families were listed on most early census records with the spelling "Johnston", though in later census records, it was most often listed as "Johnson". I'm not sure which is the "correct" spelling for this family.

M. N. Johnson was born ca 1817/18 (per 1850 census) in South Carolina, presumably Horry District. I don't know what his initials stood for. There were two older Johnson's named "Matthew" and "Meshack", and perhaps he was named for one of them. His sister named a son "Meredith", so perhaps that was his name as well.

I don't know who M. N. 's parents were. There are numerous suspects. That leaves the field wide open. Their may be some evidence regarding his parentage somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet. I don't yet have the 1830 census enumerations for Horry Dist, SC. If I did, I could possibly narrow the list of suspects somewhat based on who had male children about his age then.

There is some possibility that M. N. Johnson was a grandson of William Johnson Sr, a son of one of William's older children.

He had an apparent sister (or niece?) Avey Johnson (c1832) who was living with him in 1850. She seems to have been a single mother, with several children born out of wedlock. In 1850, they were just 5 houses from a widow, or single mother: Sarah Johnson (c1825), relationship to them unknown.

M. N. would have been about 2 years old in 1820, so if listed on the 1820 census with his parents, he would have been enumerated in the "under 10" age group (born ca 1810/20). In 1820 Horry, there were five Johnston households with at least one male child this age. One of these could be his father: Allen, Jacob, James, Samuel or William Johnston. More research is needed to further narrow down this list. I know that William was not his father, but that leaves the other four as suspects.

In 1830, M. N. would have been about 12 years old, so if listed, he would be in the age 10-14 category (born ca 1815/20). ** Unfortunately, I don't yet have the 1830 enumerations.

In 1840, M. N. would have been about 22 years old, so if listed, he would be in the age 20-29 category (born ca 1810/20). Phillip Johnson (c1795) had an apparent son this age with him in 1840. Allen Johnson (c1790/1800) also had an apparent son that age in 1840. They were the only ones, so it is possible that either Phillip or Allen is his father. Of course at that age (22), M. N. could have been residing with another family as a hired laborer or something.

M. N. Johnson married Annis --- between ca 1840 and 1846 in Horry Dist, SC. I don't know what her maiden name was. She was born ca 1824/25 in SC.

M. N. Johnson was not listed on an 1845 Horry District tax list. He was of age then, but probably owned no land (only land or slave owners were listed, apparently). (Horry District Taxpayers 1845-1846 online at the Horry County Historical Society Web pages)

M. N. Johnson and family were listed on the 1850 census in Horry Dist, SC just five houses from Sarah Johnson (c1825), either a widow, or single mother. There was an "Avey Johnson" age 18 with a child living with M. N. and family. I suspect this is his sister, or perhaps a niece.

I did not find any of this family in Horry in 1860. Two of the children (Allen and Rutilla) were in Horry later on, so perhaps they were just missed in 1860.

Daughter Rutilla Johnson married Bethel T. Skipper ca 1866/67 in Horry and they resided in Gallivants Ferry Township. (Thanks to Kathie Hinson for telling me about this marriage).

Son Allen Johnson married Elizabeth Sarvis and they were listed in Bayboro Township for the 1870 census, and in Dog Bluff later on.

I found no trace of M. N. or wife Annis in 1860 or 1870.

** I have not yet checked the 1880 or later census records for more data on this family.

Children

M. N. and Annis Johnson had three children per the 1850 census records. They may have had others born after 1850, but I don't know who they were. Thanks to Kathie Hinson for providing additional data on these children.

Rutilla Caroline Johnson (1846)

Allen Campbell Johnson (1848)

Orie Johnson (c1849/50)

Rutilla Caroline Johnson was born Nov 1846 (per 1900 census) in Horry Dist, SC. She was with her parents for the 1850 census. Thanks to Kathie Hinson for Rutilla's middle name.

In 1860, there was a Rutilla Johnson age 16 (c1843/44) in Horry with Elizabeth Johnson (widow of William Sr). First of all, I don't know that this is the same Rutilla, but I don't know who else it might be, if not her. If it is her, this shows some kind of relation to the William Johnson family. I'd say this might suggest that her father M. N. was a child of William, but that isn't so (William left a Will naming his heirs, and M. N. was not one of them), however, it may be that M. N. was a grandson of William, a son of one of William's older sons.

Rutilla Johnson married Bethel T. Skipper ca 1866/67 in Horry Dist, SC. Bethel was born Feb 1845 in Horry, a son of Matthew R. Skipper (1816-1898) and Harriet A. --- (1818-1883). (Thanks to Kathie Hinson for telling me about Bethel's wife being Rutilla Johnson; I already had Bethel and Rutilla in my files, but I didn't know she was a Johnson).

Bethel and Rutilla were in Horry, in Gallivants Ferry Township in 1870, listed next to Rutilla's aunt Avey Johnson.

** Bethel and Rutilla were in Horry, in Gallivants Ferry Township in 1880 and 1900 also, but I have not yet typed up those entries.

Allen Campbell Johnson was born 8 Apr 1848 (per tombstone) in Horry Dist, SC. He was with his parents for the 1850 census. Thanks to Kathie Hinson for Allen's middle name.

Allen C. Johnson was not found on the 1860 census in Horry District (nor in neighboring Marion District).

Allen married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Sarvis ca 1867/68 (per 1900 census). Her maiden name was shared by Kathie Hinson. Elizabeth was born Jan 1850 (per 1900 census, just "1850" given on tombstone) in Horry. I don't know who her parents were.

Allen and Elizabeth were listed on the 1870 census in Horry, in Bayboro Township. William Floyd, age 9 was with them, relationship unknown. They were three houses from Anna Johnson age 60, relationship unknown.

** I have not yet found Allen on the 1880 census.

** Allen and Elizabeth were on the 1900 census in Horry, in Dog Bluff Township. I don't have this typed up yet.

Allen died on 19 Nov 1924 in Horry, and Elizabeth in 1937. They are buried at the Brown Swamp United Methodist Church Cemetery. (online at Horry County Historical Society).

Orie Johnson was born ca 1849/50 (age 6 months in 1850) in Horry Dist, SC. In 1850 she was with her parents with her name given as "Are" which I assume is probably "Arry" or "Orry".

I did not find her after 1850.
